OK I'm making the move into winter hanging and buying more gear to fill my closets. As i sit here on this cold Sunday morning, I decided to look at the weather on Mount Rogers here in VA. The temps went down to -36.5 degrees with the wind chill. The actual low was -6.5 degrees. Im not familiar with the ratings of TQ and UQ when it comes to wind chill. I'm assuming if the actual temp is 0 degrees and I have a 0 degree set up, as long as I block the wind it shouldn't matter what the wind chill is correct? Or should I shoot for the wind chill temp for the quilt ratings? Blocking the wind is not a problem as I have under quilt cover or hammock sock and a tarp with doors among other tricks in my back pocket to block the wind.

That's how I look at it - eliminate the wind and insulate for the temp. My favorite wind block is a tyvek sock/pod that snugs up to my neck along with a hug bugnet to knock the wind down around my face.
Extra's I have along to boost the temp range of my insulation include a stainless steel hot water bottle and vapor barrier clothing used next to the skin. I also like/use a mummy bag with hood vs. TQ.

Blocking the wind is essential. You mentioned UQ protector and tarp with doors, they will stop the wind from taking heat away from your insulation. Wind chill temperature is how cold it feels on exposed living tissue. (Your skin)

Insulate to actual air temp(but add some degrees to account for the oops forecast missed the boat scenario) and make use of your wind blocking arsenal and you will be snug as a bug...but, just remember to manage the condensation component as well as that can be a big misery too.

Test test test test test (near to a bail out point) to see how your gear/setup works in your environment/conditions.....that is the biggest thing anyone can do. Making errors in the extreme cold out in the field can be fatal so tread with wisdom in your gear/setup. test test test...

Hey Oldpappy, I would like to see that Tyvek sock do you have a pic of it?

This photo doesn't do it justice, but after over a year's use in all weather (and 2 winters), this simple 8.5oz 'soft tyvek sock' is by far my favorite item. It was based on a loose interpretation of Just Jeff's DIY Sock - version 2.

It's made for a gathered end with a removable ridgeline - no attached bugnet.
I plan to make another out of a grey polyester car cover.

Block that wind and you'll be alright. Make sure your day clothes are up for it if your exposed.

The white is ok for winter but really stands out in the summer. It is light, but bulkier than my nylon UQP.
Here's how I made it (I think it took about an hour):

PM me if you are interested in making one out of grey car cover material - I have plenty here and can cut off a piece for you (free).
