View Full Version : Talk about no trees!

So let’s say that you’re on a little road trip. Maybe, I dunno, driving from the UK to Mongolia as part of a charity rally. Many nights will be spent where there are no trees and you just can’t bring yourself to include a tent, nor do you want to sleep in your rally racer. What do you do?

If you’re Nick from DD Hammocks, you do this:

I received an email from Nick this morning on an unrelated topic and he mentioned the Hammock Mount for a Jeep (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=10595&highlight=hammock+mount+for+the+jeep) thread and said that these pics may be of some interest. Of course I begged him to let me post them on HF and he most graciously agreed. Here’s the little write-up from the email about the hang.

I was on Hammock Forums recently and noticed a thread titled 'hammock mount for the jeep' - I attached a couple of photos that may be of interest if you saw this thread! This summer I spent a month driving from the UK to Mongolia as part of a charity rally and my team-mate and I slept almost every night in the new Frontline hammocks attached to the car roofrack! It was even possible for one of us to lie in the hammock while the other drove! I'm planning to make a similar roofrack made for my car back home (the roofrack was bolted through the roof at each corner - the poles that supported the hammocks could be removed when driving on main roads and put in the back of the car - to put them up took just 2 minutes, the poles simply slid into the tube shaped cross on the roof).
I like this guy! I mean how can you not like a fella that says it’s possible for one to lay in the hammock while the other person is driving? I like a rough ride from time to time, but you’d have to be some kind of heavy sleeper to sleep through a rally ride. :scared:

Anyhow, I figured the pictures would be interesting to a few. He promised me more details about the rig and I’ll post them when I get them. At least we know of one other hammock manufacturer lurking in the HF shadows. :thumbup1:

I ran a 99 civic in a rookie sportsman event in 07. did terrible !!!
but had a great time. Wasn't able to afford run the car after that, but still
attend couple events each year as crew for a buddy that runs in a bit more serious class. Its an awesome time. But hard on the average wallet!

Would love to find out if more people are into it around here.

Scotland to Mongolia sounds absolutely epic!!!!!!!
where can I read more info on vehicle class, etc for this event ?

May not have many dimes left in the pocket, but I can still share the dream eh

I would never have believed the roof of that Subaru could take that. It's gotta be bent up some. Gotta.

Wonder if they make that for a bike/scooter?

Can't help with the blonde, I've got my own issues on that front :scared:, but he did send me a couple of closer look pics and a little info:

Nick of DD Hammocks
The first roof rack pic shows the shape of the rack, a cross. The main benefit of this shape was that once the extender poles were put in place the distance between the ends of the bars was approx 2.8m, long enough to hang the hammocks comfortably. It also allowed us to put gear on the top of the rack without it getting in the way of the hammocks which could still be set-up and taken down very quickly. Plus the rack was the shape of the Scotland flag! I've written some more details on the second photo.

Sounds like a good project for someone with an engineering background to me. :D Can you have it done in a year or two. ;)

I like his statement about "using the hammock while driving", I would like to see that trick.

This would work nicely as the top of a "ladder rack" on a pickup also.

Now that would work pretty good Ken ... extension on the rear and you could hang in the bed area!

Yeah, room for 3 hammocks that way. One over each side and one in the middle. Imagine that going up Kistler! Gangway!!

YEAH ... but with some of those tourist drivers .... might lost a hanger on the curves! :scared:

"signs of wear"

Indeed. Lookit the cracks radiating out from that mount. A larger footprint would have helped.

Hanging while driving evokes images of those poor souls whose stretchers were strapped to the skids of H13s in Korea. Yikes.

Yep, made me want to dig out the old M.A.S.H. movie tonight.
I just can't imagine laying in a hammock hanging from a car going down rough roads. That's pretty serious faith in your gear right there!

There may have been some alcohol involved in that hang! ;) or at the very least ... some kind of dare!

Well, we did have a small discussion of the merits of a good Bourbon over Scotch. While I disagree with his opinion on the matter, he does seem to be well versed.

i am doing something similar with my pro-tec alluminum headboard w/ lumberstops. I wrap my strap around the lumber stop and attach it to the expanded metal in the headboard. it works great for a one tree hang. my metric conversions are off, but did he say that he only had about 9 ft between the hanging posts. that seems a little short to me.

I second that demand!

Not much fun if you edged to close to overhanging vegetation on the side of the road!

Gotta have a major pair and ultimate faith in your hammock!
