The first Yellow Cat
I have to seam seal the ridge but I just had to get some air under this thing.

http://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/6/7/034.JPG
It took me about 10 hours or so and lots of concentration.

That's indeed very yellow.... No stealth hanging for you!

Very nice and very...umm...yellow :p

A word on the little bit of slack I'm seeing in the pic - don't be afraid to tension the crap out of that thing. I can see you reinforced the corners, and assuming you made the tie-outs as per my directions as well, it'll take a LOT of punishment. A tarp that big is going to have some stretch to it - so if you want to get that nice, flat, taut pitch the cat curves provide, don't be shy with the tension!

Nice job!

If you put a smiley face on the sides, everyone will have a nice day. Just kidding. :)

I actually think the yellow is appealing, but not stealth.

It would be hard to lose your campsite with that tarp.

Looks great Jazilla. I have always liked yellow.

Yellow was the last sil at Walmart before they got ride of the fabric section. BB, I pitched it with 550 cord just to see it up. I had been looking at a pile of yellow all weekend. I do have one question. What length trip tease do you guys use on your tie outs?

Coffee
05-08-2007, 08:05
I use 9' all around. Longer than most people. But I have had too use almost all of the length a few times. Then again I was on a big slope and do not want to pitch my tarp close. I usually have the excess length in a daisy chain.

lvleph
05-08-2007, 08:16
I use 6' on the corners and 10' on the ridge.

blackbishop351
05-08-2007, 08:31
I use 6' all around. I don't use that tiny little triptease stuff, though. It's too small to tie knots in, IMO. I use a ~ 1/8" accessory cord from REI, with the guts stripped out.

Jazilla

BB, is the accessory cory nylon like 550 or some kind of poly?

I use 5' on the corners plus Tarp Tensioners and about 7-8' on the ridge line using a shock cord tensioner built into the line.

Jazilla
05-08-2007, 13:23
Speaking of tensioners. Do you guys make your own or what?

lvleph
05-08-2007, 13:26
I use the BPL AirCore NANO Dyneema Guyline Cord Kit (http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/aircore_nano_dyneema_spectra_guyline_cord_50_ft.ht ml) on corners and Niteize figure 9s (http://www.niteize.com/productdetail.php?category_id=29&product_id=136) on the ridgeline

I made my own from latex tubing bought at a medical supply store. JRB makes thiers from some stuff called Theraband, a physical therapy aid.

My tensioners are not holding up that well. The latex has become cloudy and seems to have lost some of it's elasticity. I know that they may be a little wet inside the tubing which means it's only a matter of time before I start seeing some mold. Yuk.

I am going to start using a piece of shock cord like slowhike does.

Whenever latex is exposed to UV Rays it becomes brittle.

Would those mini bungee cords work for tensioning the side tieouts? I have some lying around. I also have shock cord, would all shock cord work or is it too stretchy (just use for a part of tieout lines)?
thanks.

probably would, but i suspect you might get a harder stretch & longer life out of the shock cord.

Great looking lemonade stand! I mean...uh...great tarp! 10 hours sounds like you made great time, actually. (I bet BB is down to half that now but he's got several practice runs by now...)

Here are my tarp tensioners: http://www.tothewoods.net/HomemadeGearTarpTensioner2.html

Yeah, I'm down to less than 5 hours, but like you say I've got some practice...and I cheat a little too :p Still nowhere near Brian's time...I have no clue how he makes his as quick as he does.

He probably cuts all his out at the same time, and then has a rolled hem foot. Most of the time it takes me is spent making sure all my measurements are correct. Sewing is probably 2-3hrs, but that is also because I am taking my time. I think the total time for my last tarp was about 6hrs. However, I would stop for beer and food.

I had the same thoughts, but according to him, he often cuts his individually and doesn't use a full-panel pattern. I'm not sure about a rolled hem foot or binding foot either...the hem feet I've seen won't go small enough for this, and the binding feet (like the one I have) won't go large enough.

Almost all my time is in sewing, so I'm definitely impressed you get through it that quick. Still doesn't explain Brian's time though :p

lvleph

If I used my double needle I could cut the time by 30mins. I should try using it, but I would also need to find it. lol

Jeff where do you find the tubing. Does the rubber start to dry rot after a while like a rubber band?
10 hours was almost non stop. Once I got started my wife had to come get me to eat dinner and go to bed. I would have been finished Saturday afternoon but my little brother came over at 9 to go to a skeet range. I almost didn't go cause I was deep into sewing my long hems. So I did all my measuring and cutting and reinforcements after work on Friday from 6 to 10 then 2 hours to finish corners Saturday morning and Sunday was finished by 11. It was a fun weekend.

So, Ya wanna SELL that Tarp?...

Just Jeff
05-09-2007, 16:24
I've seen it sold by the foot at medical supply shops. I got mine at an Army surplus store...it's sold as part of a travelling exercise kit. It comes in a ziplock bag with a length of tubing and a book of exercises. I forgot how long it was...about 10' for $3 or so.

It'll dry rot after a while. My JRB ones are fading but they're still elastic.

Jazilla
05-09-2007, 20:18
Why do you want to buy it?

SuperTroll
05-10-2007, 07:53
It Matches my PFD, Kayak, and Paddle...and Stealth Camping is not important to me when Kayaking...Hmmmmm.......

Maybe I could Commission the making of another one?

Jazilla
05-10-2007, 09:55
I can't sell it cause Brian sells the original but I do have enough material that another could be made. I would be willing to trade for a different color silnylon maybe.

SuperTroll
05-10-2007, 13:16
Does brian make them in yellow?...AND...I have 15 yds of a nylon material that I bought at WM for 1 dollar a yard that MAY be a silnylon of sorts, it sure doesn't look like the equinox sil nylon (Not as waxy feeling)...I'll GIVE you that just for having considered the request.

angrysparrow

Does brian make them in yellow?

There is nothing on Brian's site (http://www.outdoorequipmentsupplier.com/maccattarps.htm) to suggest that he makes them in differing colors. I guess you could always contact him to see about it, but good luck getting a response.

lvleph
05-10-2007, 13:53
He also does not make it in that size.

Just Jeff
05-10-2007, 16:50
He makes custom tarps...you could give him the measurements you want. Don't know if he'd let you send him your own material to make it from, but he might consider it if you email him. Don't forget that he's in college and sometimes takes a while to respond to emails. Right priority, IMO.

Jazilla
05-15-2007, 12:50
Still haven't gotten a chance to seam seal it but I hope to do that soon so I can test it. This one was a test to see if I could do it. I think I will try and make another of a more stealthy color for those times when I don't want to be found.

A glow in the dark cat tarp would be pretty funky......

btourer
05-15-2007, 17:51
Ya, that would make it a lot easier to find your way back to the hammock after your 3 am appointment at the cat hole.

However, it would probably really freak the land owner seeing the glow out in the woods!

Jazilla
05-16-2007, 09:08
Glow in the dark is a good idea. You can find your way back like btourer said and people will think you are a ufo and stay away. Then when you get back you can watch the guy with no teeth talk about the aliens he say while drinking in the woods.
