I see a lot of people replace their stock tarps with something else, what's wrong with the stock ones?

Wrong with? Nothing, they're simply *very small*.
Most people find that they prefer a larger tarp for more coverage in wind-driven rain, and to cook/lounge under.

Exactly and the first ones were smaller yet! Just one time in a driving rain or a prolonged rainy period will more than prove the worth of a larger tarp.
