Ahhh, fall is here at last and winter is on its six. The air has turned crisp and our discussions have revolved around staying warm in our beloved hammocks.

This can, of course, mean only one thing. It’s time for our annual Down Group Buy!

The Details:
This is the good stuff; 900fp down from Speer Hammocks! Ed has graciously extended a 15% discount to Hammock Forum members only. His 3.1oz bags of 900fp down are normally $30 each, but he is offering them to us for $25.50 each cause we’re 'special'. This is only $1.50 more per bag than we paid last year, which in the current economic conditions is fairly amazing to me.

$25.50 per bag

Shipping:
1-10 bags: $9.50
11-15 bags: $12.50
16-20 bags: $15
International shipping will require that you contact Ed for the rate, but he WILL ship to you.
If you need more than 20 bags, well, you've got bigger issues than me which is saying a lot! :scared:

This offer ends November 30, 2009!

Luxury spending (like hammocks and hammock accessories) is generally one of the first sectors to drop off and I’m certain that Ed’s costs haven’t gotten any lower. Also, consider that this is the highest quality stuff out there at 900 fp and still 45 cents cheaper than Thru Hiker’s 800fp down bags. Not to mention that with Ed you get bags of 3.1oz instead of 3oz. Now 0.1 may not seem like much if you’ve never worked with down before, but it’s added to the bag to account for any spillage during the transfer. Yes, it happens!

Deal is pretty much the same as last year’s concerning the ordering process. This deal is nowhere to be found on the Speer site as it is only for us. To order, you will need to email Ed at info(at)SpeerHammock(dot)com ([email protected]). When ordering, specify how many bags and provide your shipping address. He will then send you a PayPal email invoice so that you may pay with a credit card. If you’re a cash only kind of person, Ed will still hook you up. He was very accommodating to us last year I and doubt this year will be any different. If you prefer to speak with Ed directly, you can order over the phone by calling him at 828-724-4444.

Now then, the challenge: Last year’s down group buy is going to be tough to beat. I’m not sure you new kids have what it takes. Just kidding! I’m a proud man to be sure, but would be very happy to see the previous record beat. It stands at 100 bags. King of the Group Buy! If you watch the TV show “Bones” you’ll get that reference.

We’ve got more people on the forum this year than we did last year, so I have high hopes of beating last year’s record. While not required, it is fun to post what you are ordering instead of doing it quietly behind the scenes. Dutch got me in all kinds of trouble last year with his ‘I’ll order two more if you order two more’ :glare:stuff. However, I’ve grown and matured in the last year , so I’m invincible to those type of attacks now. :D

I’ll start it off with a commitment to 5 bags of glorious 900 fp downy goodness.:woot:
Next...?

Would this be a great buy for DIY folks? If not a DIY person can it be called an investment for having some else make a UQ, or something?

I have not read "yet" that there are folks willing to make quilts....if someone supplied the filling.

School me if you like, but I could use a nice cover quilt.

Hello to all, I'm new to the forum. Thanks to my foot surgery and my fiancee, I am now in full sewing-project mode for our DIY hammock gears!

I'm about to attempt my first UQ project, and very glad that this group buy comes up just in time. I can't wait to get started!

Thank you for putting the group buy together! :)

what is the volume of an uncompressed ounce of 900 down?

900 cubic inches.
Here's the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fill_power).

900 cubic inches? 9"x10"x10" according to specifications.
or 40" x 11"x 2" approx...
so 3 oz might do for a torso underquilt- 33x 40 x2"
(Just bought 8 oz off stormcrow- stll got some left- call me in the spring, eh?)
you guys have fun without me! KM

Cheers

From some quilt specs I've read it seems that about 12 oz. is average for a full length 3 season quilt. Does that sound about right?

Oh wow, I wish I'd been paying more attention to the forums before I placed my down order with Ed the other day for full walk-up price. That's OK, though, at least the extra $5 is going to a good operation.

I hope this shipment of down gets here quicker than the last one did. Even though Ed sent it right away, it took over a week to travel from NC to VA. Musta been all of those states in between...

If it did it correctly - you should see a calculation table. Temps are to be taken with a grain of salt, and more as a summer, 3 season, winter classification.

I believe I'll get two bags, much cheaper than paying someone $20 an oz for "overstuff".

Anyone in the Madison/southern Wisconsin area interested in a group group buy? My idea is that we all order our down and get it shipped together to save on shipping costs. Not only do we save on shipping the more we buy, but also by shipping it together we don't get whacked with duplicate shipping charges. This will only really work if people live close by and could come pick it up for less than the cost of gas. Just an idea....

I'm thinking about getting 4 bags myself.

So, how is this order happening? This also might be the time for a good pattern info for making a nest or quilt. I'm still trying to figure out if it's a do-able project for myself. What's the timeline to decide?

So far I'm resisting...mainly because I know EXACTLY what would happen if I tried to stuff ANYTHING with that fluffy stuff, and I prefer to stay married...:scared:

I just noticed that the e-mail should be:

info(at)speerhammocks(dot)com

My original e-mail to the address listed in the group buy details was returned. The address needs the 's' according to Speer's website.
