Hey guys,
I just got wind of this, but on Saturday, the Dartmouth Outing Club is attempting to (vicariously) hike the entire AT in 24 hours.
They still need people to hike, and they're giving memberships to anyone that helps that's not already a member. I'm doing a short-ish section (VA 624 - VA 620) that includes Dragon's Tooth, one of the post card rock formations of VA.

Here's the sections that they still need (As of Thursday evening):
----------------------------------------
Hi AT in a day hikers,

I'm pleased to report that with students hiking in Virginia and the absolutely incredible effort that you made contacting potential hikers, we now have over 2000 miles of coverage, 93% of the trail. There are currently over 850 hikers, including roughly 70 students.

REMAINING SEGMENTS
We only need 13 more hikers to complete our goal. The remaining segments to be covered are:
NC/TN:
Devil Fork Gap/N.C.212 to Allen Gap/N.C.208/Tenn.70 14.1 miles
Bridge on US Rt.25/Rt.70 to Lemon Gap/N.C.1182 14.4 miles
Low Gap to Pecks Corner 13.5 miles
If you can hike one of these sections, please contact Melanie Parnon '13 ([email protected]) or Lindsey Romero '13 ([email protected])

Central VA:
Salt Log Gap/USFS 62 to US 60 8.5 miles
US 60 to Blue Ridge Parkway mile 51.7 10.9 miles
Blue Ridge Parkway mile 51.7 to US 510/Va.130 10.9 miles
Petites Gap/Blue Ridge Parkway mile 71.0 to Blue Ridge Parkway mile 78.4 7.3 miles
Blue Ridge Parkway mile 78.4 to Va.614 11.4 miles
Va.614 to Va.43/Bearwallow Gap 6.4 miles
Va.43/Bearwallow Gap to Black Horse Gap/Blue Ridge Parkway mile 97.7 8.1 miles
Black Horse Gap/Blue Ridge Parkway mile 97.7 to US 220 13.6 miles
US 220 to McAfee Knob 16.1 miles
Va.624 to Craig Creek Rd 15.5 miles
If you can hike one of these sections, or are already a hiker in this section and have shuttling questions of concerns, please contact [email protected].

EMERGENCY HIKERS
There are nearly 1000 hikers heading out this Saturday. Chances are that someone may need drop last minute, even Saturday morning. We will need hikers to be "on call" for each section, ESPECIALLY in GA, NC/TN and VA, as the weather may not cooperate. Please email [email protected] if you can be an emergency hiker with your location and contact information.

HIKER INFORMATION
Please visit http://doc.dartmouth.edu/atinaday/ to find more information of the hike including confirmation, logo and documentation, timing & hiker clarification, what to bring, hiker safety, how to give back to the AT and where to forward questions.

UPDATE
We are now offering one-year DOC memberships to all hikers who are not Dartmouth affliated. Benefits for members include:
-Reduced rates for DOC cabin rentals.
-Reduced rates for season passes for Dartmouth Outdoor Rentals and the Dartmouth Cross Country Ski Center.
-Reduced prices for DOC publications, and DOC periodicals at no charge.
-Eligibility to use the Daniels Climbing Gym.
To get your membership, you must request it when you send in your hike photo and trip report, after the hike. You must also include a mailing address so that we can send the membership to you.
Logo & Documentation
We would like all hikers to print out the AT in a day logo (attached) and bring it on the hike. Once you find a nice spot on the trail - a nice overlook, a trail sign, a tree with the colors of fall, etc. - take a picture with the logo. When you get back from the hike, email in your photo along with trip report. Your trip report should include where you hiked, how the hike went, and why the Dartmouth Outing Club is meaningful to you, and anything else you would like to share. If you are not Dartmouth affiliated, comment on why the AT is meaningful to you. If you prefer, you can send in a hardcopy of your picture and trip report to:

ATinaday
PO Box 9
Hanover, NH 03755

We will collect all the pictures and trip reports and compile them into a document on the hike, which will be made available online, presented at the DOC banquet, displayed in Robinson hall and then submitted to Rauner Special Collections library.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for advertising the event, please send it [email protected] and we will get back to you soon.

Thank you so much for participating in this historic event! Happy Hiking!

I believe they got something like 93% of it walked. I contributed about 7 miles. It was a fun feeling, knowing a whole bunch of other people were walking the same trail at the same time. Met a couple of really chill people at the shelter. 2 of them were hiking from Roanoke, VA down to Abingdon, VA. They said they'd met a dude the other day that was doing 40 miles/day!!
