Please forgive me if this has already been discussed recently but my friends and I are in our 30's and, after hanging in Havasupai, are hooked on hammock camping. What are some of everyone's favorite locations to hang in AZ? We do not want to be around too many people - especially kids - so we're looking for some dispersed areas to try out rather than popular campgrounds. We're considering camping near the Lava Tubes or maybe Crazy Jug Point but I appreciate any and all suggestions.

Wow, you don't need to go nearly that far. Some of my favorites (sorted by proximity to you):

The Supes:

The Rim near Payson:

The Catalinas (closer for me than you):

The following video describes a hike to Grass Shack, but if you have extra time I *really* like to hang at Manning Camp in the Rincons:

Thanks for the great ideas kwpapke! I think my friends' idea is to essentially "get out of town" and enjoy some cooler temps along with some nature exploration to complement the overnight hang. At least that's the current plan. I'm sure we'd like to try out your suggestions as well!

And to mojeb21, GPS coordinates please. :)

Just added the following video. Its a little far for you, pushing 5 hour drive, but IMHO the best mountain hiking I've found so far in AZ. There are a lot closer places to hang, but if you want to get away for a few days and do some serious mountain hiking this is the place to do it:

If you want a low usage area you could try Pine Mountain. It has a nice 9 mile loop and you see almost no one. Also has great views from the top.

This sounds excellent. I'd like something near water but this looks like a nice option as well. Thanks!

The campground has a creek that runs through it. The first 3+ miles of the hike follow one of the creeks. There are a few springs that you will pass. If you camp in the first mile you should easily have water. Depending on the time of the year, the upper springs could be dry. If you are going to camp at the top you will have to carry your water.

On a map you can look for the Salt Flat Campground. You will need a higher clearance vehicle for the last 10 miles.

Glad you brought this one up. It looked like about a 20 mile loop to me and I was thinking about doing it as a day hike. How difficult is the trail?

I did it about 6 years ago and remember it as being mostly rolling hills, not a tough hike. It was not particularly well marked/signed at the time, and we did lose the trail at one point and had to bushwhack by GPS to pick it back up again.

kwpapke awesome sugestions. High likelyhood I will be traveling AZ once again. Really love the state. If it comes about I sure want to do some of these hikes/hangs. Thanks for posting Kurt.

Havasupai is best on a three day trip. 10mi down to camp. 12 or 15mi day two down past the falls. Day three back up to the trailhead (start early BTW.) I did it last October and was able to hang my hammock. This waterfall is one of the most photographed waterfalls in the world and for good reason. It is an epic bucket list trip. You would not regret it.

I assume you mean this one: http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=223

Are there enough trees for hammock hanging? According to the HAZ description campsites are few and far between.

Yes, there are few campsites, but that's the beauty of the place...less or no people! There are plenty of trees and a few choice camp sites for hanging. A couple of those photosets and triplogs are mine on HAZ, love that place!
