I started a thread over on the "sock/pod" section on the topic of Pertex. In that thread, it became evident that Pertex is not so easy to get on a retail basis here in the US. I've located a seller in the UK that has Pertex MicroLight (1.3 oz/yd) and may be able to get Pertex Quantum (0.9 pz/yd). She said she will check on Quantum with her wholesaler this week.

It's premature to have totals yet, but the Microlite is just over $6/yd before shipping from the UK. I have no idea of the price or availability of Quantum yet.

That being said, I thought I'd see if there is any interest in a group buy. I will hopefully be able to get one or both of the fabrics, and perhaps a group discount ( or at least a break on shipping).

Anyone interested???

I'm interested as you know! Pertex is used in sleeping bags, windshirts, Jackets, etc. If you look at some of your gear you might have something that is made of Pertex and not realize it. My Marmot sleeping bag is made from Pertex Quantum. Really nice fabric, possibly better or at least equal to Momentum 90.

If I get an idea of the volume we might need, that will put me in a better bargaining position when she gets back to me. Hopefully I can get an order in later this week.

Depending how much the quantum is per yard after shipping, I may be in for the group buy.

I may be interested as well, depending on the price and what "need" for it I can concoct.

You can get quantum and microlight here - http://www.extremtextil.de/catalog/index.php?cPath=21_25&sort=3a&page=2

I have ordered some and its the real deal.

A guy on ebay uk is also selling microlight in teal. I bought pertex in 1.1 and microlight and just finished my first te-wa based design underquilt at the weekend.

I looked on ebay.co.uk..

That was the only vendor that I've found. She has offered to extend a 10% discount if the order is over 25 meters. The shipping was about $1.60/ meter. with the 10% discount and shipping, Pertex MicroLight comes to about US$6.38 . I have still not heard about the availability of the .9/oz Quantum.

That's not far off the price of plain ripstop nylon here. I was looking at getting 11 meters for myself. The rolls are 64 inches wide.

I would be interested in 5 meters, maybe 6, if the price is $6.38/meter. I've been meaning to make a sock for my BB for awhile now.

Put me down for 20 meters of microlight if the price is under $6.50/meter.
What color choices are there?

Yup, saw that. I've already got the BLUES about what commercial choices are available in hammock quilts. I'm going back to the ground if I don't get something better than the usual 1.1 ripstop, with it's proneness to pinholes and biting cold wind penetration.

Teal is okay, but the picture looks more blue and less green than some silnylon I've used. It would be nice to know if the seller has other colors available.

Looks like the eBay seller has had some other colors, although it is a little heavier at 55 g/sqm.

I have a bright blue topquilt and I'm happy with the loud color. Everything else in my kit as earth toned as the forest itself, so I'm glad to have something I can wave at the SAR plane. The number of times I haven't been able to find my hammock after hanging my bear bag... I use little fluorescent mason line ties on the trees to lead me back to my olive and tan compound.

Fella's, I'm looking at the volume discount (10%) along with the variety of color requests here. It did not look like she was giving much of a benefit or penalty on the shipping regardless of quantity. That sort of begs the question that if:
1.) Bulk order with 10% discount is shipped to one member.
2.) Said member then breaks apart the order to each of the individuals and ships it.
3.) How much would we really be saving in terms of effort?

With the discount (32p or $0.53)/meter . I don't know what the shipping would be around the country.

I'm not deciding one way or another. I just thought I'd pose the question. If I get the 11 meters I was thinking about, I'll save $5.87 with the group buy over just getting it myself. I'll order some either way.

Any thoughts?

I calculate the 3.20 Euros/meter as $4.80. If the shipping is $1.60/meter, then the total without a bulk discount is $6.40/meter. Is this correct? If so, anyone ordering directly from the ebay seller would get that price, regardless of the amount. Maybe it would be simpler if we ordered separately. I sent the seller a question about bulk orders and shipping just to double check. I wouldn't want those who only need small yardage to lose out here.

Actually, the price is in British Pounds which are more expensive that Euros.. at least for the moment. One Pound is currently $1.67. So 3.20 Pounds equals $5.34. The shipping is about right at $1.60. The total is $6.94 shipped with no discount.

ah, I was skimming this whole thing too quickly. I thought you needed 25m to make the deal, not get the discount.

It's going to be $5 minimum to ship a number of metres of fabric in the second round, probably closer to $10. So accepting your calculation of $0.53 discount per metre would mean that a buyer would have to hit 9.4 metres ($5 shipping) or twice that for $10 shipping to start benefiting.

This is a go-your-way thing methinks. Thanks for the links.

Just to be clear, you don't need to buy 25m EACH for a discount. The total order would need to be over 25m to get a group discount.
It appears that her shipping per unit does not change whether you buy one or one hundred.

Wow, thanks for catching my error. I thought the British had gone to Euros. Price still looks good. I had one response from Trish:

"Hi, Yes I will ship the USA. For an order of 25 metres plus I can offer a discount of ten percent. Cost of postage for 11 metres would be £10.50p. I am preparing an order of 25 metres and once I have the correct weight I will work out postage to the USA for 25 metres. Regards. Trish"

I haven't received her follow-up yet. It sounds like she calculates shipping by weight rather than yardage. I'm planning a biggish order, but not sure that I can manage 25 m. by myself, so I'll await a consensus (or, failing that, a decision) on whether to do a group buy.

Not yet. I just sent her a reminder, asking about shipping cost for 25 m. of microlight and availability of quantum.

Here's the response
"Hi David, Sorry I do not have any Pertex Quantam. I think you will find it on the internet. Postage costs for 25 metres of Pertex would be £24.50p. This would be on top of the cost of your fabric. Regards. Trish"

That makes the cost of 25 m. with shipping and 10% discount 96.50 GBP.
The exchange rate from the web is 1 US Dollar = 0.59957 British Pound, but PayPal exchange rate: 1 USD = 0.588342 GBP.

There may be customs duty. If so, it applies to shipping cost, as well as to the cost of the fabric.

There may be a reason why Pertex is hard to find in the US.

How do you determine the import tax?

I have perused various government and non-government web sites and documents, and conclude that the most reliable way of determining duty is to order some and see what they charge you. When hammockforum members were importing Aarn packs from New Zealand there was much speculation about when duty would be charged, and how much. There was also apparently considerable variation in the way U.S. Customs functioned from case to case.

Does anyone out there have experience ordering fabrics from Britain?

guys, you might be interested in this text on one of the UK outdoor firms websites (alpkit)

"We have dropped Pertex Quantum fabric on this latest batch not through choice, but because of our direct route to market. Due to the threat felt by other brands we were not given a license to develop products using Pertex fabrics. Fortunately there are now a number of fabric mills in Japan and Taiwan that are capable of producing extremely lightweight fabrics that equal the performance of Pertex. One of these mills actually bought the Pertex brand when it became impossible to continue manufacture of Pertex in the UK. The fabric used on the PipeDream is made by Toray, one of the largest and most respected mills in Japan."

Interestingly, Toray also has a european website www.ttel.co.uk and they may have a US agent as well. Maybe something to think about?
