This is the sign-up for a group buy of 2mm Dynaglide from New England ropes...

Product Description:

DynaGlide is a high visible snag free 2 mm throw line made from 100% HMPE, High Modulus Polyethylene, that is pre stretched and tensile set, then treated with a vinyl coating. Compact design glides easily over branches allowing lighter throw weights. Very high strength. Very low stretch. Coating improves abrasion resistance and provides color coding capabilities. Slick finsh glides effortlessly over bark. Tensile strenght 1,000 lbs. Available in fluorescent orange or bright yellow.

Right now the lowest price I have found is $312 for a 2400' spool. I may be able to get a small, say 5% discount on that price through an Arborist forum I mod on.

pgibson is also inquiring into prices. We will go with the lowest price we can find.

But based on the $312 price, that comes to $.13 per foot. I will eat the shipping costs to get it to me, but shipping to you will be actual. Im sure up to 400' or so will fit into one of the USPS tyvek flat rate bags.

Im not looking to sell this or make any money on this group buy. All costs will be actual. Im sure the per foot price will be less if we can secure 2 spools.

What color will it be???

Well, if theres enough interest for 2 spools, we can get one of each. If there isnt enough interest for 2 spools, we'll put it up to a majority vote once we get a final price and close the buy.

I just rounded out the first spool....

Lets get a second one filled up.

I was going to just respond that I thought it would work fine with the Small Figure 9.

Decided to not to do that.

Grabbed my 200' hank and a small Figure 9. Ran the Dynaglide between 2 trees and hauled tight with the small Figure 9. Holds just fine.

opie
11-16-2009, 15:59
Holy..... Ill update the list after this post.

So far the best price I have been able to secure is $308 per spool shipped from WesSpur. Blue Ridge was the best price at $302.75 per spool, but the shipping came to $24. My local saw/arborist shop, from which I have done an extensive amount of business, was able to match Blue Ridges price, but Id have to pay tax on top of the price, which comes to $24 per roll. So as it stands now, the per foot price is $.12.8 per foot. On top of that will be the cost of me shipping it to you.

opie
11-16-2009, 16:00
How much longer will the sign-up be available?

I say lets give it a week or so....

WesSpur said they dont have any spools in stock. And NER is spotty on their shipments. They can take anywhere from 1-3 weeks to ship. Ill ask if they can drop ship it directly to me.

pgibson
11-16-2009, 16:05
Well I am not sure how but it looks like Opie is able to get this stuff for less than wholesale, so Opie have at it. Took several hours and about 5 calls to NER but they finally got back to me, they want $5000 worth of order commitments minimum per year to open a wholesale account with $500.00 minimum per shipment. And with Opie able to get a better price than what NER sells it for I just don't see that kind of volume on guy-line cord. So lets run with what ever Opie can do and I will tag on some for me in both colors once we see were each spool ends up totaling at. If there are a few hundred feet left I will try and pick up the ends. I just don't know what NER is doing, doesn't seem like they want to sell the stuff they make. :confused:

PayPal is going to be the prefered method of payment. Please remember the fees paypal charges as well. During a normal transaction where Im selling something, I dont ever expect anyone to cough up the fees as well.... But Im not making any money on this.

It's not that the fees don't get charged in that case, it's that they are directed at the payer instead of the recipient.

With a large group, invariably there would be one or more people that neglected to follow those instructions. It might be better to just build the fees into the price on that reasoning.

I have 1 more iron in the fire in regards to price.

Drewboy, Once I nail down the lowest price, then I will figure everyones per-foot price. If it was possible to purchase first class postage online outside of paypal, It wouldnt be an issue. IIRC, the paypal fees are 3% + $.29. Ill have to look into it.

I may have another option in regards to the fees....Let me look into it.

drewboy
11-16-2009, 17:01
According to the Paypal website, personal transfer charges are free to senders and recipients as long as the charges are fully funded by a Paypal balance or Bank account. Not true if a credit/debit card or Paypal credit is used. In that case, the charges can be applied to sender or recipient. Good to know for future reference.

It's not that the fees don't get charged in that case, it's that they are directed at the payer instead of the recipient.

opie
11-16-2009, 17:10
Paypal fees are 2.9% + $.30 per transaction up to $3000 per month. Then it drops to 2.5% + $.30 for $3001 to $10,000.

Shipping will range anywhere from $1.22 to $3.26. Thats first class mail package rates. I think this rope stuffed into an envelope will excede the 3/4" rule for large envelopes.

I agree. Group buys are work for the organizer and they do it for the community and not because they're making money.

Also, I agree with AngrySparrow, compute the paypal fees into the final per person price.

opie

No it is similar to what Ed sells but his is another type, there are lots of throw lines like this that are sold under all sorts of names and Ed's stuff is made by another company. But it is all similar overall in the type of material and size of line.

Looks like one of the main differences is the dynaglide is a single braid where as the no tangle has a core.

Hey Opie,
I think you should add in the Paypal cost to the amount charged to each individual buy. No need for you to be the only person that "Takes it for the Gipper",
We are a community helping each other out, and this is a "Group buy." :D
And besides, like you said "You are going to be a veeeeery busy guy!"

Well Opie, I have to see what orders come in over the next day or two to see what I can commit to but I was figuring on 400 of each but would shift more to the green if that is what is left. I will give it till Friday morning to see exactly what I can guarantee for cretin, but if we do slip over to another spool of either or both I would see what I can do to pick up as much of the slack as I can. With only 2 days on this I would think that another spool of each would be doable.

Leave it open and if you have 3-4 spools of each -or close any way they may be able to give an even better price as that is a good sized bargaining chip with NER. :D

OK.... I may pick up some more also... But I already have 200' of the orange on the way.

Once these 4 spools fill up, Ill run an alternate list untill a spool is filled. If the alternate list fills a spool, Ill add it to the buy.

I may be able to get the $.12 per foot price down with the addition of the fourth spool. Ill find out tomorrow and Ill also inquire on a 5th and 6th spool.

What Im going to do is start another list. This one will not be definite unless enough interest pools to fill up 1 spool. There are some folks waiting in the background to round off a spool if there isnt enough interest. So dont be shy about getting your interest out.

Allright... Looks like $.12 is the best price regardless of the number of spools.

What Im going to do is break down the prices based on the footage people have requested...

100' = $14.27
150' = $20.45
200' = $26.98
300' = $39.86
400' = $52.75
450' = $59.28

Prices are based on $.12 per foot. 100' of dynaglide weighs 2.5 ounces. (Thanks TeeDee) The USPS shipping table is broken down like this...

1 ounce $1.22
2 ounces $1.39
3 ounces $1.56
4 ounces $1.73
5 ounces $1.90
6 ounces $2.07
7 ounces $2.24
8 ounces $2.41
9 ounces $2.58
10 ounces $2.75
11 ounces $2.92
12 ounces $3.09
13 ounces $3.26

Ive figured a 100' order, with envelope is 2 ounces. 200' is 3 ounces and so on. I have also figured in a 3% paypal fee plus the $.30 they charge per transaction.

Everyone can start sending monies to kcasey740095 (at) att.net.

Opie - I don't want you to get shortchanged on this - what you are doing is far and above the call of duty to the forums.

Have you checked the weight of the Dynaglide?

I weighed my 200' hank: 5.15 oz. That works out to 2.575 oz/100' or 0.16 lb/100'

Now I haven't checked the length of my 200' hank, but doubt that it is too far off.

So I'm pretty sure that the New England web site spec of 0.1 lb/100 is very optimistic and the weight is closer to what Samson Rope specs their 2 mm Zing-It at 0.16 lb/100' which matches my hank of DynaGlide.

So if you have computed the shipping based on 1.6 oz /100' then you are getting shortchanged on the shipping.

Please re-adjust the shipping cost.

I got some of this in orange today.... My 200' hank came out right at 5 ounces.

The color does flake off a bit, but doesnt appear to bleed off like the Amsteel. It does look spliceable... With a small needle. Ive got some ideas for tarp tieouts Im going to try with it.

Ill do that.

I was actually able to use the tool Ive been using for the 7/64 amsteel. That nice since I can string almost 18" of line in it rather than a couple inches for a regular needle.

This dynaglide has some very small strands... And is slippery! It does appear to hold a knot well.

EDIT: Tapestry needles is what Ive been using. I think the issue is the strands on this are so small and close together... any kind of point seperates the strands and the needle pokes through.

Yes.

Ikemouser (I'm pretty sure it was him) asked about using this for hammock suspension.

Darn it. I cannot get that out of my mind. Now I just have to make up 2 Whoopie Slings for a DynaGlide version of my MSLS and test. I would not make it an everyday use version, but the thought of a suspension using 2 mm and 1.75 mm rope is just too intriguing as a kind of demo for some SUL people wanting to know just how light they can possibly make it. I just know that some SUL person will just have to use something like that - heck they cut handles off toothbrushes. :D

Yeah it's more a matter of curiosity and making something on the edge and seeing if it is really useful :lol:

One problem I'm more concerned about than breaking the 2 mm Dynaglide is how that small diameter works with the webbing?

I've been using 1/16" vectran suspension lines with whoopie slings for a while now. It's only 560 lb. test, but that's 4 times my weight, and no problems so far. I was concerned that a line that small could cut my straps, so sleeved the loops with 6" pieces of dacron line - something I used to do for kevlar kite lines so the loop on a lark's head knot wouldn't cut the line. I expect dynaglide to make great hammock suspension lines and structural ridgelines. IMHO it would be overkill to use it for side tieouts.

Hey, what happened to leaving open until 22nd, 8:00pm?

Well.... Heres the scoop...

When I started this... I DID NOT envision 9600' of rope. I thought for sure there would only be enough interest in MAYBE 1 spool. So I wanted to be fair, and give the folks that dont get on every nite the ability to see, and join if they wish.

However... When the spools started filling up..2, then 3, then 4..... I had to insert a break in the action.

There is an alternate list that I can keep running untill a spool is filled up. I think in order to get the same $.12 per foot price we would need to fill up 2, at least. I am willing to do that, but not untill I get this 9600' out in the hands of the folks that have bought it.

And something to think about... there are 5280 feet in a mile.

Using the Dynaglide for the Prussic? On top of what size main rope?

Using the Dynaglide for the Prussic:

On itself - 3 wraps I can get to slide by pulling it with my hand, but 4 wraps I couldn't. Would 5 wraps be better? Don't know.
On 3 mm AS-78, a 3 wrap Dynaglide Prussic held just fine.

Using 1.75 mm Lash-It for the Prussic on the Dynaglide, 3 wraps held fine for me.

Doubt it - the paracord has a larger diameter than the dynaglide. Maybe if you stripped the inner strands out to get a flatter wrap and more surface contact. Not too sure how good a grip the paracord nylon has on the dynaglide coating.

But paracord is, what, 550 lbs and less with the inner strands pulled out. The dynaglide is 1000 lbs. The paracord would be the weak link.

so is the issue the solid core or the diameter? 2 mm is some small stuff...
Would a similar diameter (as paracord), non-core nylon cord be better as it will flatten out?
I should just quit worrying and wrap the dynaglide prusik 5x and be done...:rolleyes:
