Well it's official, looks like we have some interest in a Spring 2016 Hang.
Thanks to some info from Kamper Kurt regarding reserved status of our previously desired spot, we have a new location, thanks to some input from Clean.
dates will be April 29-May 1, with some possibly heading up Thursday April 28 to secure the spot. Here is a link to an area map, per Clean, check out the South Half map: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/coconino/landmanagement/projects/?cid=stelprdb5356224
Here is another look

So far based on these dates I have the following planning to attend:
Randerson(2)
Clean(2)
Wolverine(1)
AZsteelman(1)
I know others have expressed interest so please add your name to the list.
This site does not have restrooms/water like the Fall 2015 location so plan accordingly.
I would suggest that each group bring 1-2 bundles of firewood.
Everyone feel free to weigh in, but I would suggest a potluck for either Friday or Saturday evening dinner.
I'll kick it off by putting my name on the list for some smoked pulled pork, and some other item to be determined.
Anyone with a good size camp, stove that is willing to drag it along, let us know.
Everyone dust off your Dutch ovens!
Look forward to seeing the list grow.
Ready, set, go!
Topic #1: Any interest in doing this as a backpacking trip rather than a car-camping trip?
Here is the Cabin Loop (http://caltopo.com/m/232H) as a Caltopo map that I just happen to have handy. My son and I backpacked this a week or two before the hang last October. It's 17 miles and can be done as a one or two night trip. For the record, my son hopes this ends up being a lazy car-camping trip. Still, I thought I'd float the idea. I also might be willing to do a backpacking run on the weekend of 4/16-17 using scouting out the camp area as an excuse to go up there.
Topic #2: I just spoke with the ranger for the Mogollon District. He said the roads open around 4/1 to 4/15 but that 5/1 is possible. He said it depends on what happens with the snow in March. Y'all probably knew this already.

I am certainly game for either. My son will side with yours, haha!

Good to know, never occurred to me that they physically closed those roads. If everyone is ok leaving the dates,we can play the odds and hope for normal road conditions by our trip dates?
I think the odds are good that the road will be open by then. I think we should keep the date.
Also by "run" I did not mean "run". I meant walk :)

Still packed from SoCal this might work but what I know is this will be a 5 hour run depending how one would recommend the best back roads
if available and fairly decent conditions without spending to much time exploring (lost) on my way in. Would Clint Wells or Camp Verda be best
then finding rim road 300 to ??? Vehicle Pruis or Dodge caravan.
Your thoughts
Prius will be fine. It may take some creative driving around a puddle or two but it will work.
Here is a Google Map to the site (https://goo.gl/maps/Vv2RQu8dnVx). You can map it from wherever you want. I prefer to drive in from the north (HWY 87 > FR95 > FR95D > FR139G) or (HWY 87 > FR95 > FR139 > FR139G). I propose that we put a sign at the intersection of FR139 and FR139G guide people to the final campsite. I'll take responsibility for making the sign(s) as the date approaches.

Thanks Clean, my thoughts exactly, we can get it marked so easy to find spot and I have driven my Nissan Altima all over the place up there with no issues

Ok let's see if I got this Lake Mary to Clint Wells turn left 87 to 95 turn right head south till I find camp here sign. Ok I'm in plus 1 and a half. Pulled pork need cole slew with a couple of bundles of wood and various sausages with baguette.
Plan is leaving Thursday morning camp somewhere in the area head out Friday morning unless someone is coming in on Thursday.
Anything I missed let me know.
Randerson
02-23-2016, 12:52
Sounds right Pedro. If I get up there for a scouting trip I can confirm condition of road 95 for you. Otherwise you would continue down 87 to road 300 and in from the south. Anyone else with experience coming from North please chime in.
I'd love to attend, but our wedding anniversary is April 30. I'd like to remain married, so have to pass on this one.
One of these days!!

I might be able to make the mid April jaunt up there, as well. Just have to look at work schedules as they near.

Clean, what I would like to know is;
1. Do you plan on doing the full loop or just part of it?
2. Which trails are included?
U-Bar 6.5 miles + Barbershop 4.5 miles + General Crook ~5 miles? + Fred Haught 6 miles = 22 miles
U-Bar 6.5 miles + Barbershop 4.5 miles + Houston Brothers 7 miles = 18 miles
Houston Brothers 7 miles + General Crook ~5 miles? + Fred Haught 6 miles = 18 miles
3. Are you planning to camp on the trail and splitting the hike into two pieces, or to do the whole hike on Saturday?
Thanks.

Sorry for the late response. I've been super-busy.
I had recommended the eastern half of the cabin loop for the recon mission, parking near the Pinchot Cabin and traveling clockwise on UBar, Barbershop and Houston Brother's trails. Here's my map of the area. http://caltopo.com/m/232H
My vote would be for spending one night out, either before the turn from UBar onto Barbershop or perhaps a bit later on Barbershop near the green GPS markers I dropped on my last trip.
I think we should call the rangers a week out to verify but I understand that the water is always reliable at Dane Spring and Aspen Spring. I'd be surprised if we did not find water in Barbershop Canyon which the route crosses twice.
FYI The road closure map has not been updated yet. I'll try to take a minute and call tomorrow and get an update from the rangers.

Hey Kamper Kurt,
Sorry for slow updates, been a crazy week. No need to take Friday off unless you want to explore a little on your own. Clean and I plan to leave Phoenix area Saturday am and be at TH near Pinchot Cabin between 9:30-10am. Planning to hike Saturday and do 1 night out on the trail, head home Sunday after doing a little scouting for best site for our April 29 weekend car camp/hang. didn't get in touch with Ranger yet regarding water, but will, and will update then. According to Wolverine, who plans to join, the roads are all open. Hope to see you up there Saturday.

I have to be back Sunday morning. I may try to camp Friday night on the opposite side (near where you will end Saturday), and I will do the whole ~20 miles Saturday trying to meet up with you. It will take a little more coordination so I will send you some contact details for me and try to talk to you mid-week.
Thanks.

There was some good rain over that way Friday and today. where are we going to meet up at on sat?
Ok. I just talked to a ranger. She agreed that Aspen and Dane Springs were both sure bets for water. I would be surprised if we didn't see water in Barbershop Canyon which we cross a couple times. That said, we might end up camping dry on Saturday night so plan accordingly. I'll probably bring 3 liters of capacity but only carry 2.
I think we should meet at the trailhead near the Pinchot Cabin. I've got GPS coordinates on a google map but it's hard to link to from my phone. I'll post it later from my computer.

A couple of us had a good time checking out the Cabin Loop, had a little cold weather/snow but still a great time and found some nice spots for future trips.
That said, unfortunately due to low expected turnout, schedule conflicts, and after discussing options with the few planned attendees, we have decided to pull the plug and cancel the upcoming hang. Still looking forward to some kind of Fall hang like last year. We can start a new thread for a Fall Hang when that planning happens.
Happy Hangin!

Interesting folks might head out let me give this a thought as I still have time off. Thinking of the the best time to meet at 87-95. A few hours that way two of us heading down can get lost together but I have directions. So if it's mid day noon you should arrive at the junction at 10 am.

Where Rd 139 and 139g(map is shown on pg 1 of this thread, i can repost also).meet is a good starting place and we can camp along either of those roads where it is highlighted in yellow. I'll bring some flagging tape on Friday and mark some directions to wherever we end up in that area. We can still throw together a little potluck action, so feel free to bring some of your favorites along. Also, as previously planned, everyone bring a bundle or two of wood for the fire.

Grey crosshairs in center of rd 139/139g junction has some great areas to hang and anywhere highlighted in yellow going north from junction has good trees for hanging. First one up Friday grab a good spot for 5 or 6 of us and we'll flag it for directions as other come in.
Alright Mr. Randerson, I will be coming up 87 from the south. Am going to turn right on Rim Rd (FR300) and proceed to 139 and turn left on it, then proceed to 139G and look for good spot. Sound about right?? See you guys Friday.

Good grief - I finally just now found this place. I had a good idea where it was, just couldn't put my finger on it. Looks about the same distance total from PHX to come in either from the north or the south entrance on Rim Road. At least now I think I can get there!

I'll be leaving Phoenix shortly after noon I think.

Coming in from the north is smoother and faster IMO
Have fun, guys.
Will any of you be there on Sunday evening?

Thanks, I'll go in that way, then. I appreciate the advice. I've only come in from the south going to Bear Canyon lake and other places further south. I don't think I'll be there Sunday evening.

We are here!
How was the snow Saturday night? I was backpacking about spent the night a couple miles southeast of y'all. I went to bed at 8 in light drizzle with my tarp in a low porch mode. I woke up less than an hour later when my stakes pulled out of the ground because of all the wet snow that had fallen. It was quite a surprise. I then managed to lose two of my stakes in the snow while reptiching the tarp.
In retrospect I should have used the mid-panel pullouts on my Superfly. Lots of lessons learned this weekend...

We had about a half inch of snow during nite. Nice wet heavy stuff. Missed everybody that skipped this hang. I personally saw about twenty elk on this outing, mostly on 139 G. What a beautiful spot to hang out. The walk down to the spring is beyond great. Let's have the next one here!!

Glad you guys had a good time in spite of some whacky weather! Really bummed I got sick last week and had to bail out. I definitely plan to get back up that way this summer a few times.

You weren't sick!! You were working on some lime green monstrosity. We heard all about it. Over and over and over again.

Haha! Trust me, I would rather have been with you guys for a night or two. I did have to spend a few hours at the sewing machine though, just not on the giant green tatp yet

Hey Redfish, just curious, how long did it take you to get over to that spot from NM? It really is a great location/setting.

Randerson, I could make it a long day if I took the big I, but I'm retired and take the scenic route which is mostly hwys 60 and 260. Camp somewhere inroute going and coming. Come to think of it, I could make in a day that way also, but why bother.
Anyway, the three of us had a nice time in spite of a "little" inclement weather.

Yeah it was a great weekend. The weather could have been better but then I wouldn't have been able to test out Big Orange and make sure she didn't leak! Beautiful area, I'm going back there for sure and soon!
Gods to new a couple of other hangers - my first group hang. Redfish and Wolverine, I enjoyed the heck out of it!!
RAnderson, get on the Lime green Diamond!!
