Hey everyone,
Last night we had a PM-Spammer (Mariatctfounds) send out a bunch of Spam messages via PM. Please just delete those messages...the account is now banned.
We do everything we can to prevent this kind of junk on the forum, but occasionally one gets through. If you see Spam, please report it to the staff as soon as possible...
Thanks..

Thanks for keeping us all safe!
I also noticed they had 0 posts. Anyway to make someone have a minimum # of posts prior to having PM privileges?
I got the notification of the PM but what was strange was that it was on a different email than I have listed here. My email for Hammock Forums and White Blaze is the same.

Yes, but that would not work well. We routinely get valid PM questions from new members about various things. Setting a minimum would prevent that.

PM notifications simply go to the address you have listed in your profile (which is hidden). There are no other addresses or info stored anywhere.

well in this case it didn't. I use Yahoo email on here and WB. This one came through my other email
On the drum-builders forum I admin (also VBulliten), I had to set all new users into the "moderation" queue. But some of them were still able to send PM's (the ones that figured it out). I then found where you can restrict guest and "moderated", and banned and such, as to NOT allow PM's to be sent by them.
Just pointing out in case that matches what happened.
(No, I didn't get the spam).

So now we know HF has officiallly BLOWN UP, site must be huge now, if spammers are wasting time on it.

And waste time it will be. Excellent work. I got the spam, thanks for doing such a great job minimizing this stuff. And I agree - it's good to let lurkers who finally join be able to PM right away - hammock camping is not the way most people grew up camping so it invites lots of great questions.

Of course we sleep... we are hammockers, right?:D
As a fairly new person to this forum I appreciate the ability to send PM's. Before I even had 4 posts I had sent PM's to several people who were somewhat local to me. Ok maybe regional. This is a great resource and I hate to see spammers try to ruin it.

Agreed. I think blocking PMs for new members would be an over-reaction, based on a single instance of spamming. Would be more effective to require manually typing in a string of characters, as some sites require.
But, until spamming becomes an actual problem, I'm happy with HF just the way it is.

I like fried spam sandwich!!! But we're afraid the X brand showing up here is just not the same quality as the original canned stuff:confused::(
I hear it contains a nasty virus:eek::scared:

WOW!!! Now, THAT sounds interesting! I will definitely check it out. On the trail, I really have no stomach for bland foods. It has to be spicy to entice me. Bacon flavored SPAM should do the trick! Thanks for the info.

Fry it up crisp and add some hot sauce of your choice ... that's the way I like it! It's so good ... you know it's gotta be bad for you! ;)
