Why don't I get email notifications for subscribed threads?
Click on UserCP at top of screen
Choose Edit Options
Scroll down to Default Thread Subscriptions
Make sure it's set to Instant Email Notification
Also make sure you have a valid outside email account defined

If you see a thread title and there is a little checkbox after the name you are subscribed to that thread. Any time someone adds a message to that thread, you get an email (instantly, daily, etc. per your profile configuration).
Most subscriptions are automatic, if you enable them in the control panel. I also manually subscribe to threads that I want to "remember" and/or follow.
I figured out my issue. It was all my fault. I use gmail and I had applied a label to hammock forum messages, but I had marked that label as hidden. Doh!
