CLOSED: Another Roll of Insultex

Folks,

I will order another roll of Insultex during January. Having reviewed what it cost me to cut, package and distribute the previous roll, I will offer it at $5 per yard. A couple of people have already told me what they want to buy, so I thought I would begin taking orders. There are about 175 yards available in this roll. You should expect delivery by the end of January.

Let's do it the same way as before. Feel free to post here, but the formal order will be placed when I receive a PayPal message with payment and shipping address. My PayPal address is "MacEntyre (at) Yahoo (dot) com"

Please pay only the $5 X your yardage. I will ask for a second payment when I know the actual insured shipping costs.

This time, I am going to package them a little tighter, to avoid the USPS "ballon" charges!

Yes, but not by itself. Thing1 and Thing2 used UQs made from IX and Wiggy's Window Insulation at 21*F.

DuctTape has an IX insert that I made to fit his UQ. I don't think he has reported on it's performance yet.

I have a DIY hammock with IX-only UQ and TQ in the works. I plan to make the UQ and TQ in layers, so it will be convertible for the season.

Right now, I'm working on a bulk buy of white goose down. The supplier I've found can get me 100% down for as little as $X / ounce (replace "X" with really good price, but not a done deal yet!), but I'm still waiting to get the specs on its "fill power". They said its guaranteed "at least 650+, but usually closer to 750". :)

I was thinking of a down UQ & TQ, with a secondary quilt for colder temps made of 2 layers of Insultex (or more, depending on YOUR reports. ;) )

I am SO EXCITED to start this project!!

Sounds like the holy grail of insulation. The spec says 1 layer protects a person to -25, then why would you ever need more than that?

Tonight it is 28, and supposed to get down to 19. I have two layers of IX for my UQ, plus another small IX pad at each end, inside the hammock, plus a hammock sock with one layer of IX on the bottom. Finally, I added a layer of raw IX under the hammock. I think it might work.

My other tests have been with UQs that included a layer of Wiggy's window insulation, and with a vest with sleeves.

When IX falls away from you at all, it doesn't insulate you at all.

The fit is important, particularly at the ends of an UQ. Last night, everything below my chest was toasty. I had two problems with the IX only UQ at the head end, where the sock was open.

One was that I did not cinch or gather the ends enough. They fell away from the hammock (see the other problem) and let cold air into the UQ.

The other problem was that I did not have the suspension tight enough. The UQ sagged down, and my shoulders got cold.

What made the 24*F night workable was the Speer Top Blanket! I just pulled it down over my shoulders and all was good!

Now what to do with the neat tyvek bag you made for shipping - maybe a pillow for clothes under the knees in the hammock or maybe with some hook and loop closure pieces it can hang from the whoopie slings for storage , or maybe........ so many ideas, so little time to play.

My Insultex arrived this morning in a WONDERFUL envelope... took some time to rip the top seam, cuz I didn't want to ruin the envelope! Thank goodness for my SOG multiplier, with built-in seam ripper tool. ;)

I'm looking forward to more ideas of what to do with the "packaging"... pillow, gear bag, ??? Everybody chime in!

Package arrived today. Gotta admit the insultex was not what I was expecting. I had imagined it more of a finished material, something like outer layers of ripstop with a mystery insulation bonded in between. My fault for not doing my homework.

Will probably use it along with the 1.1 ripstop from Scott to make a two layer backyard hammock with built in insulation for lazying around the yard in spring and summer. Not for overnighting.

Just recieved mine as well. Very interesting , very light , you could carry 5 yds of it in your pack and not know it was there weight wise. You could plus up on the layers with hardly any weight penalty. Now we just need another cold snap.

Folks have found that putting it inside a hammock, or between the layers of a double layer hammock, does not do well. Apparently, it compresses the IX and forfeits the insulating qualities.

But I was basing that on packing it. Turns out that low density polyethylene, if that's what this is, does compress.

Has anyone tried to sandwich it with an outer of Ripstop and an inner piece of Fleece
to provide a bit of airspace....thought I'd seen a thread where someone was going at
that to use as an underquilt.

Well not having seen a HH Deep Jungle I am not sure how much pressure would be on the pad but it was a thought......it would be alot more convenient and tons lighter than an UQ.

So, I finished this thing up about 11 pm and who is going to wait a couple days to test:D

The quilt is a 2/3 UQ cut into a trapezoid shape to fit a bridge or non-asym hammock. It came out to 10.7 oz after adding end shock cords and cord locks.

I sewed the IX to the outcover and quilted one layer of Climashield Combat to the layer of ripstop against the hammock. The Climashield Combat insulation is 3.7oz square yard and claims .9" loft (more like .5 to .75) Good thing about using for an UQ is that that the climashield is hanging and will eventually loft to its full potential. CLO value, who cares, I keep putting more in until I am warm.

I have never used a fully synthetic UQ before but have used the climashield on the sides of my UQ's to keep insulation all the way to the edge. I figured that one layer of the climashield combat might get me into the upper 30's based on my experience


I slept for about 4 hours at 22* and never got cold. I fully expected this temp to be past the capability of the UQ. The quilt builds heat the longer you are in it. Down feels warmer faster but does not continue to build heat. The quilt has the IX sewn in all the way to the edge so when it is sealed against the hammock air does not escape.

I do feel that the quilt I made is "matched" to my bridge hammock to help reduce weight and use minimal adjustments on the ends with the shockcords. I probably could use on my Clark (non-asym) with good results but probably not as good as the bridge. Sealing an UQ to a bridge hammock is so easy even a ....... could do it. I think that this type quilt will have to be shaped to the hammock intended for use. A standard rectangular quilt would have problems with bunching up and cold spots with the IX material.

Down is still king of the insulations IMO. It can do it lighter, adapt over a larger temp range , and conform easier to multiple hammocks. With that said this quilt really exceeded my expectations. I think the approx .75" gap that the climashield provided from the hammock to the IX is close to right distance needed for the IX to perform. It is going to get into the low teens later in the week so I will test some more. At least I now have a fully synthetic lightweight quilt for 3 season use. The IX helped reduce weight and increased the performance of the climashield. How much is still up for debate but I know that I could not have just used the one layer of climashield at 22*.

Don't sell your down because this material will require a near perfect match to your hammock but I think it does work. I reserve the right to change my mind after a full night of use:D The neighbor's dog would not stop barking is the reason I bailed last night after 4 hours. I have used these short UQ's enough to know I was not getting cold anytime soon anyways.

I would like to hear of others attempts before I spend time on it if the results are not good.

I know insulbrite, used in potholders, will work but IX may be lighter.
