I know this is very late in coming, my apologies.

I would like to formally announce Backwoods Daydreamer Gear (http://www.backwoodsdaydreamer.webs.com/) - Gear to keep you dry in the outdoors. www.backwoodsdaydreamer.webs.com (http://www.backwoodsdaydreamer.webs.com/). You can contact me by here by PM, by email ([email protected]) or through my website. Not all products are available through the webstore, so just email me if you're interested in something not listed there (like side panel pull additions, special order colors or other custom work).

Your support here at Hammock Forums has been amazing. You’re the best group of outdoorsy folk I know and have made BDG Tarps possible.

As many of you know, I've already been building and selling tarps for a few months now. I have held off on any sort of advertising because I did not want to run into the problem of having more orders than I could handle... as it turns out - you found me at a far more rapid rate than I anticipated! We've sold nearly 50 tarps in just a few months, most all of those over the Christmas rush. It has been a whirlwind here. My apologies to those of you who are on a long waiting list - and my sincere thanks for your support! It has been overwhelming.

Before getting too talky, let’s see some of the products, shall we? Then you can keep reading if you don't mind me rambling on. :)

Winter Dream:
By far, the most popular tarp I offer. This is a very large tarp designed for severe wet and snowy weather. While the ridgeline is still 11', the outside edges are 13' long, giving an extra foot of coverage on either end. This allows the ends to be swung in, giving even more end coverage than the Four Season Tarp. An excellent tarp for severe foul weather.

Four Season:
The Four Season comes in both catenary cut and rectangular cut models. This is a large tarp with good coverage for all year use. The tie-outs are positioned so that the ends can be swung in to protect from wind driven rain.

http://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/2/0/5/4/four_season_cat_3_348752_thumb.jpg (http://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=8138&c=7)

Three Season Hex:
The Three Season is a Hexagon shaped tarp which gives lots of coverage, but shaves the ounces by losing the corner weight. This is an excellent size for ultralight backpackers who still want a large enough tarp to do camp chores under.

http://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/2/0/5/4/three_season_hex3_940367_thumb.jpg (http://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=8139&c=7)

Fair Weather Friend - Rectangle / Asym:
Asymmetrical: For the serious gram counter, here is your tarp for fast and light packing. It is a diamond fly, but with the corners off center to reflect the way most people sleep in a hammock - corner to corner. For hammock campers who want to stay dry, but need to cut out every possible ounce. (11' ridgeline, 7'3" wide).

Rectangular: This one is a bit larger than the asymmetrical model and is an ecxellent choice if you need more end coverage for your setup than the asym model affords. The rectangle tarp is also a good choice if you are concerned about having to go to ground at some point and will need a more versatile tarp. (11' ridgeline, 5' wide).

http://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/2/0/5/4/bd_fair_weather_friend_thumb.jpg (http://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=8149&c=7)

Side Panel Pulls:
About 1/3 of my customers ask to have side panel pulls added to their tarps. I offer this service for $15.00 for the set of four. They can be added most anywhere on the tarp. If unspecified I place them 42" in and 28" down. That leaves approx. 4' between tie outs and gives what I consider to be the optimal amount of head room while siting in a fairly low hanging hammock.

Even more to come…

Some more important information you’ll be interested in:
The most common question I get is this: Can you do other colors? The answer is yes… usually for an additional fee (simply because I do not receive the same volume discount on such small orders from my suppliers). Generally this is between $10-20 over stock pricing. Color choices vary, so inquire by email if you’re wanting a special order color.

Also – in regards to colors… I have some very very good news. My main supplier has just come out with an excellent stealthy color – I’d call it a Treebark Brown (it’s got a strong hue of olive green, but is also definitely a brown). I received a sample and ran my water test on it (suspend a gallon of water in the fabric and let it hang overnight). It passed with flying colors (one drop seeped through in 15 hours) – and my supplier is running more extensive (and much more scientific) tests on it right now for me as well. Once I’ve built up a bit more capital I will be offering this as a stock color choice. I expect by the end of January.

Another color I am working on carrying as stock is Black. It will be a while down the road as well, but has been popular enough for me to try to get a hold of it in larger quantity.

http://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/2/0/5/4/water_test_-_ultrasil_black_thumb.jpg (http://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=8140&c=7)

I love building gear. As you DIY’ers know… it’s a bit of an addiction. I can stop anytime I want… really. I just don’t want to. :) In fact, I enjoy the building so much that I built far more than I could ever use. Most of it was given to friends to get them into hammock camping (many successful converts there:)). The problem there is that it becomes costly. This is where you come in. By purchasing my products, you’re enabling me to keep doing what I love... designing and building outdoor gear. It’s basically a self-supporting hobby.

I have to admit, like Adam in regards to his Underquilts (ThePerfectTrees (http://www.theperfecttrees.com/index.html) - check them out!) - I've been burning the candle at both ends. It's exciting, and exhausting. I work full time as a youth pastor (I know what you're thinking... don't pastors only work on Sundays?... :)) But, working full time, coming home to eat, spend a bit of time with my wonderful wife and daughter, then hitting the gear machine once I put the baby down for bed doesn’t leave enough time.

In that vein, I have some (potentially) good news! Over the last couple days I've been working with a friend who does clothing repairs for a local Laundromat – training her to build some of these tarps. If this works out to my liking, wait times will drop back to more manageable levels. Sure, I won’t be making much of anything, paying a “sub-contractor” to do much of the work, but it will build the business and provide income for a family that can use it more than me right now. – did I mention that I ramble?

Glad you finally got a chance to do the announcement - you have some good lookin' tarps there.

I'd like to see a picture of the Winter Dream with the doors shut. The extra coverage of those doors sounds like a real treat - it was an issue we tried to solve with our asym 12x10 but your solution looks a lot less specialized than ours.

It will be a bit before I can build enough capitol to order a roll (100yds at a pop of this stuff is rather pricey, but the most cost efficient way to do it). I hope to be able to offer it by late January. (I'll get back to you by email soon with more details Shadowmoss).

One more note:This goes out to all of you who have purchased a standard Gray Winter Dream v.2. I need some high quality pictures of the tarp strung up. I know this is a rough time of year to ask, but if you have any that you don't mind sharing - can you email them to me? ([email protected]) I've not yet been able to get ahead of orders, not even by one single tarp - so I haven't been able to take any good ones of the new model.

I don't feel right holding someone's tarp up by going out for pictures when you've already waited so long for it. Also, we're due for a couple feet of snow today and tomorrow - not the best conditions for a nice photo shoot.

Pay no attention to the color...

Here is an example of a couple ways to set it up. (Note that this one has velcro to close off ends, so they're not done with shock cord as you would normally do).

I was more interested in seeing the amount of overlap with the standard cat cut ends, as thats what I've got on my winter tarps, and I'd like to see how much you gain by going 13' on the outer edges, but thanks for the pics.

Scott, first off congratulations...The site is great...

Secondly, I know that I have a tarp coming soon, and you can take any pictures you want.. I am in no hurry to get mine yet.. I am still on a DIY Hammock and waiting for my HH from ZQ so I have time..

Thank you again for your great business practices..

I want to thank you for making my Winter Dream for me. It is an exceptional piece of gear. As it has already been stated, I will say it again, you attention to detail is outstanding and your people skills are great when it comes to figuring out exactly what we the customers are seeking in a specialized tarp. I need to get my tarp seam sealed and I will get pictures out to you as soon as possible. My first attempt at seam sealing failed miserably and thanks to the great folks here on HF I will be able to rectify this problem this coming week. Again, thank you for the great tarp!

Hey Scott, I set up my Winter Dream V2 in my backyard last week and was super impressed with the workmanship and design. I wish I had taken some pictures. It's really nice to have a quality tarp vendor on the Forums who is accessible to his customers, provides outstanding service and produces innovative designs. I will not hesitate to refer people over to you for future tarp needs.

BTW, isn't it time for BDG to have their own forum category?

I really enjoy all the cottage gear makers here on the Forums. When I get gear from them I feel good about it. I'm supporting an American company, I'm getting gear that the person who designed and made it is passionate about and therefore getting great quality for the money. I have on my radar to get more gear from the vendors here, as soon as the budget allows. I especially like how the gear tends to evolve from our wish lists of features into reality since the vendor is right here as one of us. I loves my Warbonnet BlackBird, my speer sungfit, my MacPack. I want a Switchback, and a topquilt from JRB and I'm sure I'll find more that I want as the vendors here keep innovating. I'm in line for my WinterDream now. With the new color it will be 'bout perfect I'm sure.

Thanks so much everyone, I appreciate your kind words.

Here's an image (of very poor quality and coloring) of a few colors. The flash on my phone washed out the Gray pretty badly, but the Treebark and Black are pretty close.

Gray is the standard color and I think offers the optimal amount of light in (lets face it, there are just too many times where you're stuck under the tarp for a good part of the day).

Black is just plain cool. I've got a couple special orders in Black right now and will be putting those together shorty... those are going to look sweet.

The "Treebark" is a new color my supplier just came out with (as previously mentioned) and won't be available until later this month... but if it passes all my waterproofing tests I have a feeling it will be the new color of choice at BDG. Good news on this one is that the price will be the same as the Gray.

Thanks for the pics Pak-Man.

Looks like you had some pretty good wind there. That shock cord (tensioned for holding the "wings" up and out of the way for good weather) looks like it's not sturdy enough for closing the ends off properly. At least, not at the length I send them out in. You'll want to either use thicker shock cord - or tie a loop into the shock cord at the proper placement to run the cord to the opposing stake and bring the clip back to the loop. I doubt it, but it may even be long enough to just double back to the D-ring. Let me know what you think once you've played around with it some more.

What would work really well would be Opie's shock cord tensioned guy-lines. I bet you could even have him add a longer section of shock cord for the "wings" so they're more forgiving when you get in and out.

You bet it will. This Black Winter Dream is going to look fantastic! In fact... if I ever get enough time to actually make myself a tarp (the cobbler's kids have no shoes syndrome) - I may do black to go with my black 1.1 WBBB.

Speaking of Black. At the end of January I plan to be able to offer Black Ultrasil, 1st quality, by the yard in the webstore (along with Treebark Brown - Skylite silnylon, 1st quality, as well).

...Scott you thinking about a V3 yet ;););)...

Of course.

There are some plans kicking around in my head to vastly improve on the quick close system. The loops and clips on the "doors" serve their purpose, but are not useful (in my opinion) for overnight weather protection. They leave too large a gap (1"-1.5"). I have an idea that will give complete enclosure, and will be more sure than velcro. Lots of material sourcing and testing to do there though - it could be a while (plus, I have to get ahead of my orders, which is proving to be a real problem).

And there are some more changes and additions coming down the pike as well.

I found that the grey did not provide enough shade for me (in FL) if I wanted to take a mid-day siesta or even in the early or late hours of the day.

I tried it out on the hammock stand on my back deck and was not comfortable.

Love the look of the black...but thought "black attracts heat" so Scott is making me a navy 4-season rect.

Yes... and no, but yes. :)

Here's the deal. The fabric will be ready to go Feb. 1st, there's no problem there. Now, here's the rub. We are going to be putting our house up on the market and the gear making room needs a floor laid down, as well as some other cosmetic work to make the place sale worthy. I'm going to have to take a Vacation from BDG tarps for the month of February. I expect to be back on track after that.

Silnylon in Gray, Black, and Treebark Brown by the yard will still be available during this time. While others have increased their price on sil, I've dropped it. And if you want to take a stab at your own tarp - don't hesitate with any questions, and I'd even be glad to share any designs that I have right now.

The good news is the house we're looking at buying (pending this house selling) has an even better place for me to set up shop! I'm excited.

(NOTE: this in no way affects you folks who still have outstanding orders - yours will be fulfilled before I actually shut down the shop for a while).

That new color sounds just like what I want. Can't wait to see it.

It is absolutely fantastic! I don't know that I would have changed the shade in any way had I been able to pick the color from scratch and have it made specifically for me. It should work well in all seasons for stealth as it blends in well with the trees, and ground, and leaves in the fall... it's just perfect!

I'm looking forward to hitting your tarp. I'm actually going to be cutting it off the roll after this post.

I got mine out last Friday night in a 20-30 mph wind and light rain. Awesome tarp, nice and tight, and great coverage. :D Thanks, Scott!!!!!

Randy

Randy - that's awesome news! Did you use the side panel pulls? Any pictures? Thanks for the report. :)

Scott,
Yes, I did and loved the extra room they gave me to get in and out. The wind was blowing from the direction where my head was and I was able to shut those doors down tight. At the foot they were closed but not as tight. The pulls allowed me to sit comfortably in the blackbird as I cooked and ate my breakfast.:D Good stuff!
Also, I really like the feel of the sil. It's slightly different than my SWT.

Thanks Again,

Randy

(NOTE: this in no way affects you folks who still have outstanding orders - yours will be fulfilled before I actually shut down the shop for a while).

Yeehawwww!!!!

I can't wait. Now I have to figure out my suspension., I was all set until Opie started making those neat ridge lines and tie outs. :boggle:

I used my new grey BWDD WD and Thing1 used the SWT at UWharrie. The WD is much larger than the SWT, and worked very well in the light rain we had. WD is large, and doesn't need tie outs. They are both going to Mt Rogers tomorrow!

I should have camped where you did at Uwharrie. The rain was much heavier where I was.

IMPORTANT UPDATES:

Backwoods Daydreamer Gear will be unable to take new orders at least through Feb.
We are putting our house up for sale which is requiring me to shut down the gear shop. I will be opening again once we're in the new place and I can setup the shop. I'm excited, and the new place (pending sale of our current house) has a much better setup for the gear shop. I do apologize for the delay, but will certainly be up and running in time for the spring camping/hiking season orders.

The new Treebark Brown sinylon is ready.
I couldn't ask for a better flat color (still nagging my manufacturers / suppliers to get some camo sil made up - it can be done, I just can't afford the $15000.00 minimum order to have it made specially for me). You can now order 1st quality Silnylon in Gray, Black, and Treebark Brown by the yard in my websore - $8.15/yd ($5 flat rate shipping). If you need fractions of a yard let me know and I can price that out for you.

The website has been updated. (http://www.backwoodsdaydreamer.webs.com/)
It's still a long ways from done, but I think the look is a bit nicer now. You probably won't notice much change in content (though there is some). I would appreciate any feedback you have on it.

I have some secret changes in store for the Winter Dream that you're gonna love. :)
Shh... it's a secret. There's only a couple people who know, and their lips are (hopefully) sealed. One customer is waiting on the prototype of the new system and will give me feedback when it's finished. Then we'll go from there.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and support over these first 5 months of business. Though Backwoods Daydreamer Gear is taking a bit of a hiatus, I plan to be back soon and better than before (read better turn around times and more products).

Get out in the woods -
Scott

If you need more beta testers for that winter dream, I know a certain guy named after a condiment who is moving to Colorado in two days, and will have all kinds of opportunities to test a piece of gear designed for winter use....

Just sayin' ;)

Bummer. :( Just when I was getting ready to place an order. Guess I will wait until March.

Good luck on your move. It's been 22 years since I had to do that, and will likely be many more before they move me from here and into the ground.

Here's the Winter Dream in 6' deep snow. Those tree wells will swallow you up trying to tie-off. The tarp worked magnificently as well as the Incubator, the Switchback, and the JRB Sierra Sniveller. Temps only got down to high 20's. This was not really a hanging trip since we were to stay with friends at their home in Mt Shasta, and I only had one night. Another friend had a 5th wheel toy hauler nearby in case I needed to bail, but it was not necessary.

The SMC Snow anchors worked excellently with Opie's guy lines. I had to dig them out with a pick after being set up for two days. One of my friends that lives there, laughed when he saw them. He said he used to make something similar out of old street signs, when he worked at Cal Trans.

Not yet. But that's a great idea. I'd have to set up a membership "thingy" on the website for people to post photos. However... I will be putting up a "Customer's Photos" section in the Photo Gallery - email me any and all images of BDG tarps in action and I'll sort through them and put the best up on the site.

Oh, and it doesn't have to just be photos. I'll take all your praise and adoration as well:D - I'd like to have some testimonials to put on the website :) And constructive criticism too. (I still consider BDG in it's infancy and would like to know what you'd like changed or to see added in the future as the tarps and other gear get dialed in). Email to: backwoodsdaydreamer-AT-gmail-DOT-com.

Happy Birthday, Scott.

I am eagerly awaiting the delivery of my BWD tarp any hour now. It will be like my birthday when it arrives--- actually, it IS my birthday present from LAST April. It took me that long to decide which tarp and hammock to order. My Switchback is eagerly awaited, too. I hope to show off all that good stuff at Neo's hang in April. My plan is to make an Insultex UQ once the hammock arrives. I'll go round up some Permatex; maybe the tarp will be here by the time I get home. The sun is shining brightly under a cloudless blue sky here, perfect to seal that ridgeline seam right away.

Eagerly, Turtlelady

:D:D:DWhoooooo Buddy! The mail carrier snuck up on me! When I opened the door to go to the auto parts store, my gorgeous winter tarp was waiting for me! :boggle::boggle::boggle: I am now off to the store and hoping for photos by tomorrow, if I can figure out how to attach 'em. I might just have to sleep outdoors tonight. It is a rough life!

Happy Dance in Kentucky today!

I better hide the tarp from the cat while I am away . . .all those new smells! She can have the box, but that tarp is mine, all mine!

My local Napa didn't have the right Permatex but Auto Zone did. Another stop bagged me the 25 cent plumber's flux brush. I didn't find the brush too helpful. I got into spreading the silicone with my fingers. YMMV The tarp is now drying and curing outside. I applied the silicone to both sides. I have the tarp tied to a ridgeline with prussic loops so I could flip it over easily to expose the underside of the seam for sealing. The topside was easier because I could pull against the side panel D rings and provide good tension as needed. Belatedly I wished I had put some grip clip loops on temporarily to help tension the underside but by the time I needed them, I had too much silicone on my hands to want to clean up and start again. This seal won't win any beauty contests, but it should keep me dry.:boggle: The chilly wind was not helpful, but it made me fantasize about how nicely I will soon camp protected from such winds. Thank you, Scott! Reports and pix soon!

Pay no attention to the color...

Here is an example of a couple ways to set it up. (Note that this one has velcro to close off ends, so they're not done with shock cord as you would normally do).
