Women's weekend - Female Responses Only

Who has successfully had a hammocking weekend with only women? How did it come to fruition? Was it just you and some friends of yours? Was it local or did you travel to meet with others?

I'm curious to know about those who have done this and all the details on how you did it and what worked/ what didn't. If getting more women hammocking is about reaching out individually to women, then maybe some women only weekends make it a bit more comfortable for newbies.

I have yet to do this - there's only 2 of us in my group of friends that hammock camp. I would be down with a weekend get together!

Well, I have had plenty of women only camp and back pack and paddle trips but my women friends all have tents and only one or two are curious about hanging. I doubt any of my other friends would want to dish out the cash to get a whole set up. (or spend the time making hammocks--they aren't sewers--neither am I for that matter. Can't sew a button on a shirt without it falling off). If there were plenty of set ups to borrow they would be happy to try it I am sure.

LOL! I've never been on anything EXCEPT all female hangs! I've gone on five group hiking/hammock camping trips since last Spring. One group consisted of two older moms (54 and 62) and their two daughters (one was 14, the older 30)...the 62 year old and 30 year old were total newbies, had never slept in a hammock before and were using all borrowed equipment. The other four group trips consisted of my regular set--a 74 year old, 60 year old, 54 year old, and 14 year old....three generations of my family and a friend.

I keep trying to go on a HF group hang, but it never seems to work out scheduling wise. Meanwhile, though my own group of regulars aren't as hard-core as I'd sometimes wish(!), they are hilarious! We may be pathetic hikers, but we always have an absolute blast!

None of my fellow hangers live in my area (except my daughter who lives with me), but we just meet up for our hangs. We try to plan a trip every two to three months around the year...some close, some very distant. It's always an adventure!

I've introduced my niece and another friend who bought their own hammocks. We try to get out locally and invite other tent dwellers to join us. Many are curious, try mine and like it but are still not ready to change their old habits just yet, plus the cost of the change over. A gathering would be great fun, let's see if we can get local chapters started.

That's so nice of you, but, really, don't worry about trying to plan anything around us. I think that would be a logistical nightmare--LOL! As a group, we are astonishingly slow hikers (just ask my daughter!) and geographically none of us are anywhere remotely near your neck of the woods...we are all down in the Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma area.

Ricketts Glen is my partner and I's FAVORITE place to camp. We've car camped there for years... sometimes bring our kayaks. I would DEFINITELY be interested!

I'd be happy to lead a women's trip in the northeast/ New England area. I like to backpack, paddle, hike etc. I prefer not to car camp though but would do that if it were in an out of the way place without too many people. Any takers? I live in Massachusetts but am always up for going someplace in VT or NH. I love Maine, though it is a tad far and I am going there a bunch this camping season. Maybe in April before the bugs come out? Not too cold, not too warm? Let me know anybody.

At EVERY hang, I have very well intentioned men who tell me "what I should be doing". Although I'm fairly new, I'm happy with how I figure things out on my own. If I want advice, then I'll ask for it.

I would be interested. Thinking how many can hike in (maybe a smaller number)
If your looking to grow, possibly do both car camp and hike in to the same site. Here in Jersey the trips vary to a
site depending on how the guys/gals have set up ahead of time. Some with meet there...start the fire :rolleyes:And others might canoe or hike in.
Food can be brought and share one night or on your own. We do that with our girls Kayak trip, midweek.

I'd go for a Rickett's Glen weekend. I'm in Eastern PA, so not too far. It's been a long time since I've visited there, and never camped in that park.

If anyone wants to paddle, I live near the Delaware Water Gap and Delaware River, and I could either help plan or show you around (or down) the river. Could also figure out a river camping trip. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation area allows overnights on the river at a number of designated sites for river travelers (permit needed - used to be free, not sure if it still is).

I find I have the opposite problem with mostly men groups. Yes, they try to tell me how to do it, but then they find I'm pretty self-sufficient and won't deal with me again (ego ouch?). I was raised in the sticks, in a farming area, and have been playing in the woods all my life.

I think I'm only about 2 1/2 hrs. from Trap Pond. I've never checked it out and would be interested in trying that area.

I'm in West Virginia and currently limited to the occasional overnight weekend trips. Monongalia Forest is close enough to be a playground, though South-Central Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio are close enough to make the trip.

I usually drag my daughter along with me, but she's in college now so I would LOVE to find camping friends to go out with. I'm new to the whole backpacking thing, so I'm still dialing in my gear.

I live in Preston County and get out as much as I can. My usual places are Quebec Run wild area in PA, Dolly Sods, Otter Creek, Laurel Fork and Seneca Creek. I sometimes head to Cranberry or Canaan Mtn. Our state has some awesome places to hang! I don't mind solo trips, but, I am always looking for backpacking partners. I am retired, so have plenty of options on days that I can go. I enjoy smaller group hangs.
Western VA and Maryland are pretty close. I have never backpacked in OH, so have no idea about where to go there.

Believe it or not, we have a great state park to hang in at Cedarville State Forest. I've hung there before. Kind of boring scenery compared to Shenandoah National Park, but it is convenient for those of us in Southern MD.

Camping and parks have become so popular, especially in the high population East coast, that most of the more popular parks within an easy drive are insanely crowded on the weekends/holidays. Only retirees get the parks to themselves anymore! For example, Acadia National Park is imposssible to enjoy in solitude anymore. The National Park Service should give out timed tickets via lottery to make it less crowded, like it is done out west in places like Yosemite and the Wonderland trail...Just my $.02

My friend and I are constantly looking for places to Hammock camp from down here in Bowling Green, KY. She is doing the Sheltowee Trace challenge again this year and uses her hammock.
We even come with Turtle dog stands just to make sure we don't run into problems with no Trees, or not allowed to Hang.
We might be able to swing something in PA.

I have converted a few people. I have 1 friend in Michigan looking to gear up and another in Toledo Ohio.

We know some places on the east side of Ky and TN and did you know there are 2 campgrounds in Birmingham AL that are great to hang in?
