3 of us are leaving tomorrow from Texas driving to the Taos area for a 4 day/3 night outing. We were leaning towards the Wheeler peak Area but it really doesn't matter to us where we end up. We just kind of picked this area since I had been skiing before at Taos Ski Valley so at least have an idea of how to get there.
I am kind of leading this expedition so wanted to pick a few of your thoughts and or advice as to where to go, what to do etc. We have a general plan of arriving Thursday AM and would like to see some scenery, maybe some wildlife, do some fishing, do some hanging/camping and hope to be back to our truck say around Noon on Sunday.
I bought a couple of Maps of the Wheeler Peak Wilderness but also includes the Latir Peak Wilderness as well. I am open to any suggestions as to a good overall plan of attack for this area.

I appreciate any help you can provide these South Texas boys.

Thanks, G Money

Sounds like a fun trip. Taos is fun, like another world. Beautiful de Christo mountains there!

By all means, make sure you see some Earthships (http://earthship.com/) while you're passing through to or from your trailhead...

I don't know the area well, but the last time I was there we took a beautiful hike up to Williams Lake (below Wheeler Peak). I saw some folks camping there, and it made me very jealous. Plenty of trees too.

Williams Lake looks beautiful. We'll be in Red River next month and I've been looking for a short hike in to some nice dispersed camping spots. Looks like that might be a good option.

breakfast @ Michael's Kitchen is worthy

nice natural hot spring just south(downstream) of the west end of the John Dunn bridge over the Rio Grande, park at the 1st switchback and walk down stream
