I can’t believe I am sharing this, but here we go:

Conventional undergarments must be removed before entering the hammock for comfort reasons, especially because of wires.

What do you do with it?

I had been hanging it from my ridgeline, but I’ve decided that that is outside my comfort zone because of privacy (especially when I am camping in a group, which seems frequent).

I have been entertaining the idea of a gear hammock to hold my shoes, but I don’t want to use that because I don’t want said undergarment touching the shoes and getting damp from damp shoes.

All of my sports undergarments are high impact, so they are too heavy duty to just wear all night comfortably.

I have been thinking about getting a yoga style bra that I could actually just sleep in (and wake up nearly dressed!!!).

What do you do? Thoughts appreciated.My go to hiking bra. I have a defect in my chest that makes underwire almost impossible and these are so comfy. If they are damp because of hiking during the day they're small and discreet enough to shove in your dry clothes or in the bottom of your sleeping bag

Maybe I could sew a special undergarment bag for my ridgeline. It would have to be fabulous.

But what I really want is something comfortable enough to sleep in.

No chance I could sleep wearing one. In warm weather, I have worn Prana dresses with built in soft bra with no problems. Otherwise it's hanging from my ridgeline.

Unless it’s been really hot and sweaty all day, I sleep in the sports bra I wore, or I switch out to a clean one and let that one dry on my ridge line. I never wear underwires, I gave those up years ago.
If I’m solo or with gals, I don’t wear any bra to sleep, just my sleep shirt.

I throw it over the ridgeline and let it air out. I don't sleep with one on. If I felt like putting it over the ridgeline was perhaps too public, I would go with a peak shelf as Flash Grundelore suggested.

I usually use a yoga-style bra that is OK to sleep in, but I don't need much support... not a practical solution for the more well-endowed among us.

Peak bag sounds like a good call... maybe even mesh to allow overnight drying? But I have no shame, and would be fine slinging the ***-sling over my ridgeline.

Never occurred to me to use a ridgeline. I wear underwire, can't stand to be without my U.Wires. I wear fresh delicates every morning, so I put them where they are easy to reach.

I have an antique cotton I wear to sleep in. I have a defibrillator that protrudes a lot plus both shoulders are pinned in place, so sypport is manditory.

I Use the pocket at the head of my RR. For my bra I will put on in the morning. With my BB the fresh garment goes in the shelf.

I can't sleep in a bra -- ugh!
If I feel like hanging it on the ridgeline is too public, I just pull my arms out and leave it around my neck (sports bra). Easy to put on again in the morn, too! Not sure how to do that with one that unhooks.

Now, I want to change the narrative and purposely hang my bra in a totally noticeable place. I'll proclaim "I have breasts that need a bra and I air the bra out at night! I am not embarrassed, but you should be afraid at my level of self comfort for I might just also fart in your presence!"

There's a bra I ended up getting when I had my heart surgery --- found it to be really comfortable and actually able to sleep with it on although I prefer not to --- It's a Wacoal, so not cheap...and have to order online.... the item # is 852247.
I'm kind of droopy, so I have to wear a bra in public most times - especially hiking. However, sleeping at night and having to hit the head in the middle of the night - it is what it is.... I ain't putting the bra on for that.

And...even tho I've only been out a few times with other people, my need for modesty is declining. I will make every effort to not expose myself while putting the darn thing on in the morning, but if someone catches a glimpse of a boob - well...they'll just have to deal with it.

I've done all of the above, including sleeping in my underwire bra (super uncomfortable!) but I prefer to just take off my bra and stow it in my dry bag, which seems to be working at the moment. I did find a great wireless bra at the dollar general that I will sleep in.

First off I love camping with Karla, plus it seems that the guys in our group don't care either.

For me I usually have two sports bras, my high impact one is like neon yellow and you better believe I hang that puppy out to dry, were ever I need to. I was asked once when I was with a friend in a camp ground if I could hang it some place were it really couldn't be seen since the neighbors found it embarrassing, but yet my bikini top hanging next to it wasn't a problem for them. Well if ya would know me ya know I hung it up in a more visible area. I have boobs I am not afraid of them and I will not hide the fact that I need to wear a bra... but back on topic lol. I usually try to use a disposable wash cloth (basically a thicker wet wipe) to wipe off as much of the days grim as I can before I put a nice soft purple sports bra on to sleep in. If I don't i feel like my boobs are falling up onto my throat, I've also rolled over and pinned one when I wasn't wearing a bra so I always am wearing one.

I also am not shy, if I need to change I will change right in front of everyone. My philosphy is we all have the same parts just some are bigger then others, and if you don't like it you can turn and look the other direction. The only time I am reserved is when I am in a camp ground and could face lawful action if I change in the open.... why hide the beautiful bodies we were given, why treat them like they need to be covered at all times.... embrace the human body.....

I’m lurking here to see what everyone figures out for airing their “unmentionables”. But if you’re looking for a bra to sleep in, I’ve slowly been gathering some merino wool sports bras that are becoming my daily and nightly go to’s. I have a couple different ibex ones, and I’m eyeballing an icebreaker. I like the ones that have soft cups, and the wool dries nicely overnight.

Haven’t tried smartwool personally, mainly because theirs has a polyester layer over the wool. I read a review that said that the poly layer trapped in heat and made everything feel wetter. Don’t know how that would affect drying time on the ridgeline either.

Hey Karla with a K I WANT one of those fun logos with the bra! I would totally get one.

I can't wear a bra at night I find it way too confining, so I just either stick the bra in my pack or if car camping my duffel bag or sometimes I just chuck it towards the foot of my hammock. if it is wet and needs to air I will hang it outside of my hammock on the Ridgeline but I use a tarp anyway as where I live it can either rain on you or things can fall from trees at any moment. Many times if I am out with just old friends camping I won't wear a bra. Heck, we skinny dip together so what's the big deal going braless?

Good luck finding the comfy bra, a wool one sounds nice.

I asked three people I know in person about what they do with their bra when camping, while sleeping. The answers ran from wear it
to keeping it nearby.

If the bra is on the ridge line, how do you keep it dry and not covered in forest debris? Anything exposed to the night air is going to be moist in the morning at least where we Hang or camp.

Everything about this thread is awesome! This was an issue I had my last solo backpacking trip. In the summer I hang my bra on my ridgeline, just like the photo. In the fall it gets cold and wet from frost, and although your body can dry of damp clothes/socks by wearing them, I just can't put on a cold damp bra or tank in the morining, and by the time I pack up camp, I'm just ready to go and not remove all my layers so I can put it on. My "bra" is an IBEX cami/shelf bra that my friend gave me because it was too small for her. I LOVE it. Even though I dont spend money on my other undergarmets, I would purchase this bra. It is four years old and still going strong. I wonder about hanging it on the the ridgeline just above my hammock, where I store my headlamp, but I think it would that add condensation on the inside.

Since we're being real: I have enough endowment that I feel more comfortable backpacking in an underwire, striding down the trail with minimal bounce. Also, without wire my two will smoosh into a uni-boob which isn't comfortable. Plus, sweaty. So I pack along a "night bra" in a bigger size made of stretchy, soft fabric. I bought it at Wal-Mart years ago and it lives in my backpack out in the shed so I can't tell you the brand. I tried one of the all-stretch pull-over sports bras but I like to take it off before I go to sleep and with those, you have to take your whole top ensemble off to get it over your head. This one hooks in the back so I can keep my sleep shirt over me and not freeze. Meanwhile, I put the underwire in my nearly empty backpack, handy so I can pull it into the hammock to warm up in the morning.

I wear a sports bra to hike in. I carry a second one to sleep in. Either I hang my sports bra from my tarp ridgeline or I place it in my bugnet pocket to dry and air out.

Got an Icebreaker wool sports bra a few weeks ago and am loving it. It's the Sprite Racerback style. Very comfortable, but not all that supportive. Works OK for me but would not be the best for more high-impact stuff. Might also try the more structured Cool-Lite Meld Zone.

I have gone on 3-4 day bikepacking trips where I only brought (wore) one bra and just left it on all the time -- that's mainly what I wanted this for. So far it breathes well enough that it doesn't remain damp for long after I stop doing whatever activity.

As far as airing out -- I have successfully dried damp socks and underthings by hanging on the ridgeline, over the bugnet but inside the tarp. Seems like there's just enough warmth and air circulation to have some drying action, but no condensation. Obviously conditions will cause the success rate of this strategy to vary considerably.

When hiking or hammock camping I wear a workout tank top with built in soft bra as my undergarment. When sleeping- I am naked to make the most of the goose down properties (especially in winter). When I need to get dressed, I can pull the tank on while in the hammock so no one gets a peek of the ladies.

So, I have just found this thread and i love it!
I am way too well endowed for a sports bra. I cant stand the girls being squished together. They have to hang separately and if they touch they end up fighting and I end up fighting an angry rash. So I end up sticking with a worn out version of my normal underwire daily use bra.

I throw it over the ridgeline, but at the Yates camp out I found out the hard way that colder temps = a really not fun time putting on the freezing cold bra.

I also found out on my first overnight hike that the underwire vs the straps of my pack dont get along well. I had blisters from the wires being jammed against my skin.

I sized out at a 44g or she said possibly h when I went for a fitting....not an easy size to find without ordering online, and I dont trust that cause you just never know if the sizes are true fits.

I wish I had the creativity to design the perfect bra for big busted gals!

Do you sew, or know someone who would sew and fit one just for you? If so, you're in luck! Here is just one of MANY sites to get you inspired: https://www.makebra.com/product-category/bra-patterns/
Or search "make bra pattern" for several other DIY sites where you can design your own pattern to fit perfectly no matter what your measurements, and there are detailed step-by-step construction directions. Most of them also sell or suggest where to buy quality materials. The sewing is a bit fiddly, especially if you need serious support, but really not hard if you're patient and pay attention. Even if you never make one, I think it's interesting to see all that goes into a bra's design, fit, & construction. No wonder it's so hard to shop for a bra that fits, is comfortable, and lasts a while! Oh, and you want it to LOOK good too?!?! Hahaha!

I'm hard to fit and don't like to shop for clothes, shoes, or especially bras. I'm an aspie and can't tolerate wearing anything that doesn't feel good. For decades now I've been making most of my clothes and bras to get a custom fit in the style, fabrics, quality & colors I want. I started with a 1920's Singer sewing machine when I was about 14. Still have it -- it only does straight stitch, no zigzag so I had to learn about French seams and other classic techniques -- that old machine can sew everything from fine lace to boot leather! Now I mostly use a 1970's Bernina with just a few stitch patterns for stretch fabrics, seam finishing, buttonholes, hems. In the long run I find making my own is a lot more satisfying and a better use of my time than endless shopping and still not finding what I want or need -- that's so frustrating and I either end up buying nothing or else returning or donating most of what I bought. If I make my own I can work on it when I feel like it, and I can have exactly what I like and a custom fit at a price I can afford. AND I can proudly display it on my ridgeline!

This sounds like a sales pitch for sewing your own bra. Not my intention; it's just another option that works for THIS hard-to-fit lady, and it's as close to having a fairy godmother with a magic wand as I'm likely to get. Bippity-boppity-boo(bs)!

I love my old machines and hope to keep using them both forever! I make nearly all my clothes and hiking/hammocking gear. Check out the DIY subforum here for MANY threads re. finding, testing, refurbing, maintaining old machines. Also lots of good info on what used to be Yahoo Groups for old Singers and Bernina, most of those groups have now moved to groups.io.com. My mother bought my old long-bobbin (aka "vibrating shuttle") 127 Singer and a sewing book for my 13th or maybe 14th birthday. Absolutely the BEST gift anybody ever gave me. It was rather beat-up with a bright blue over-paint job, and probably very inexpensive, all she could afford, but it was strong and ran well (still does). She didn't have a clue how to use it, but it came with 6 or 8 free lessons at the shop to make a dress from a pattern with zipper, collar and set-in sleeves. After that I was on my own to figure everything else out from the directions in a few store-bought patterns. That was long before the internet! Later a friend in high school made really exquisite, well-made, perfectly fitting clothes, and she taught me about fitting, attention to details, and fine finishing. Then I learned how to draft my own patterns from a library book. Another friend makes very intricate quilts. Not my thing, but her work still inspires me to practice patience and careful joining of fiddly little pieces. I admired her Bernina and finally bought mine second-hand in the early '80s from a Bernina sales & repair shop. It does everything I need and it's been reliable, but parts will be a challenge if needed (maybe I need a 3D printer -- yet another rabbit-hole). I still look longingly at the occasional oldies in thrift shops and the wonderful "museum" in a machine repair place about 50 miles from here but I don't have room for another one in my small house. Still, I might enjoy being an apprentice there if it weren't so far away and if I were a few years younger!

That was long-winded way of saying, it's quite possible and IMO also rewarding to make a really good custom-fit bra (or any other garment), using any machine that runs well (or even hand-sewn). My vision has never been keen, and my hands are somewhat arthritic now, but if I can make a bra you probably can, too, starting with one of those pattern sites. And there are lots of great old Singers and also some fine Berninas & Pfaffs out there, although it may take a while to find what you want in good condition and at a reasonable price. You go, girl!

I’d like to surprise co-camper calliopal with a small flag (2ft x 3ft max - probably a lot smaller would work, 1ft x 2 ft) of a cougar and a hummingbird. Maybe like hummingbird on top half/diagonal of flag and cougar on bottom half.

Do y’all know of a flag maker who could put such a thing together at a price that wouldn’t cost cougar his paw or leg?

I too have the issue of being top heavy and hating to sleep in a bra, but, I wear the Playtex 18hr bra's, no wires, and I sleep in them with no problem when camping. I have to be up atleast twice a night, and would not want to be walking around braless. I put clean under things on in the morning, and I try to keep them someplace they won't be ice cold when I have to get into them. I use a tarp always, so if I had to hang something on my line, I would be ok to do it.

I bought a cheap 'gear hammock' by Sea Dog on amazon for under $10. It is netted. I like it because I can string it up on the ends of my webbing loops that aren't in use (I use the ENO atlas XL but am looking to downsize because they are heavier than most systems). This then hovers just above the ground but below my hammock so it doesn't touch me. I place my undergarment, my waterbottle, and anything else that I want for quick access. I can fit an entire 65L backpacking pack in it, or two smaller day packs with room along the sides. I wish it wasn't mesh because the loops of the packs can get tangled easily BUT I didn't want to spend the extra money or carry the extra weight of essentially a kids sized hammock.
