View Full Version : Harold Hang 2018 - planning/plotting thread

Since so many of us seemed to see the advantages of the idea of trying to grab a large number of adjoining sites for the 2018 hang, I thought this might not be a bad time to get a thread going.
It would be great to know what we need/want for as soon a reservations become available.
So:
Who can "front" site money and do reservations?
Does anyone know when they start taking the reservations?
What dates do we want to shoot for? [The last two weekends in July seemed popular last year... late for bugs/before Augz heat]
What site numbers? [Did anyone write them down or can you remember what sites you had for '17?]

For reference: the "Group" site that John/Jerry had was apparently #79
I think we were talking about the five, odd-number, pondside sites 73-81, but might have been 71-79. Those were the ones we had across from the kludgie and parking lot, and the 3 to the south along the pond.
I remember that the ones just below our group site had LOTS of pairs that would accommodate a good number of hammocks.

Hey Ted you beat me to it. Reservations no more than 6 months in advance. If we want late July again we have to wait for late January to reserve. I had site 83 last time, there was someone inbetween, then I believe Jerry had 79. I think those 3 would be a good place to start. Late July works for me but I can be very flexible this year for dates. Thanks for getting this started. I have no problem reserving a site but I believe that 1 person cannot reserve multiple sites.

Oh!!! I was born in North Andover!! I likely have been there, although I was probably in a stroller or crawling around eating pine needles. I'll keep track of this as it would be neat to go back there. Maybe even stop in to visit some old family friends.

I was just wondering when this hang might be. Thanks for organizing. I am trying to figure out for getting time off. I can reserve a site too. For anyone not familiar with the reservations systems, it is helpful to make your account beforehand and practice reserving sites so that your finger is on the button exactly when you can reserve. (I go to places where the campsites are hotly contested and about a thousand people want the same site you do on the same day). I don't know how popular or busy HP is. Sounds like it was pretty buggy? I have only hiked there once before never camped but I was bummed I missed this last year.

My memory is that the more heavily "paired" sites were the ones below us on on past the group site last year... if you recall 83 was pretty open except right back by the pond slope. We had three cars right in the site.
Maybe someone can bushwhack in and make a determination

Maybe we should get our dates first... what about July 20-22nd ...or July 27-29th.
[Coming early or staying late did not seem to be a problem since they are weekdays]

Nothing on either one of those weekends on our calendar so far! We usually do our annual icecream social on the 20-22 weekend, but we could do it the later weekend I suppose. Oh crap, I may have just invited some hammock hangers by posting that. HAHAHAHA!!! We have tree pairs! Just bring a topping to share. We provide the icecream and hotfudge. Lol!!

We can only reserve site a maximum of six months in advance, so if we pick for example Jun 20-23, we can't reserve prior to Jan 20th. Gives us time to plot sites snd dates.
Remember Reserve America will only let you reserve one site. I reserved my second site last year in my wife's name. A consideration if we want a contiguous block of sites. FYI

If Sky can get two, Gil and Dave indicated that they would get one together, mebbe Eric grabs another, that only leaves us needing one [or possibly two] more.
I can't promise to book a site, because once again, I may have relocated South by then.

Easy answer: Just bring the ice cream to Andover!

That's certainly an idea! Although it would be kind of fun to have a bunch of hammock hangers show up at our social and mingle with the rest of our family and friends. Most think we are crazy with all this hammock camping!

That would be fun too, though I'm not sure we'd do much to change anyone's minds about the crazy thing!

You are likely correct on that one!! Hoping Harold is the 20-23 so we can do the icecream social the last weekend. I'm going to clean out some more tree pairs this spring here just in case!

Count me in for reserving a site when we get dates and locations finalized

We still have month or so to "fix" the date, but it looks like July 20-23 seems to be the fav.
That is a nice split between Fourth of July madness and August "family" vacations
Why don't we ask for input from now on from anyone that WON'T work for....?

Get your meat coolers and bacon monstrosities ready! July 20-23 sounds good. We will all have to book our sites Early the day we are allowed to book the site six months in advance. Assuming everybody loved the water sites. We should know what number everybody is going for prior to reserving to ease the madness.
What will that day be? I don’t have the capacity to figure that out right now?

Campers,
We hope that you are as excited as we are for the upcoming camping season! Recently, the 2018 dates for booking sites at beautiful Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) campgrounds were finalized, and ReserveAmerica has now completed programming for the 2018 camping season.
Beginning Tuesday, December 12 at 9:00 AM, camping reservations can be made by calling 877-422-6762 or visiting www.reserveamerica.com. As you may know, reservations can be made from six months to one day in advance of your arrival date.
Below you will find the 2018 start and end dates for the main camping season. Thank you once again for camping with us, and we look forward to seeing you in 2018!

May I suggest these sites? The site Jerry’s meat locker thingamajig was on was right next to that other large party. We were on 67 and it would make a great communal site. Huge, private, and right on the water. I will reserve that one again. The ones next to us were great too except for the one across from us- I circled some possible sites.

Subscribing to this thread. Maybe we can make it up from NJ.
Heads up.
This Saturday (1/20/18) we can make reservations for Friday July 20, 2018 according to Reserve America.
Not sure if we have to wait until Sunday 1/21 to be able to book a 2nd night? Guess we'll see on Saturday.
I see there is no confirmed consensus about specifically which sites, but I thought the group site (77) from last year, and sites to either side, is a good starting point. The adjacent site (75) had loads of trees and a ton of space, although another group was using this site when we were there. I was thinking of reserving 75 just so we'd have a site that could accommodate several hangers. Then we could get 77, 79, 81, 83 to capture that "block" of sites we had discussed.
The other option mentioned was sites down the road in the 60's. I was next to Megan (67) on site 65 last year, and although it was a large site with several trees, there were only 3 usable pairs. It would definitely have space for a couple of stands, in addition to the 3 hanging spots. Maybe the other nearby sites had more available trees? So this would be sites 61-67. A little longer walk to the bathrooms - good or bad depending on your POV, I suppose.

The ones up toward 81/83 have fewer "pairs" than the lower ones.
I'd still suggest 71-79...

Hi Guys, thanks for getting this rolling. I can't reserve a site as I can't guarantee I have that time off, I don't know my weekend rotation yet. But if I can go will someone let me and my hubby crash at their site? Looking forward to this hang as I have missed it the last few years and would love to go!

We’ll reserve 77 and 79

The 20th to 22nd wouldn't work as well for me, but only because I'm going to a concert at Fenway Park on that Saturday night. So I could definitely still make it to the hang, I'd just have to leave before all the typical Saturday night communal festivities and debauchery
Other than that, I'm excited for this hang! One of my favourites.

I booked site 83 and will post a sign up sheet soon.
Can someone please test modify access and see if everything looks ok. At Jerry's suggestion I added "site" and "reserved by" so that we can track who is staying where. Sites are limited to 4 people and two vehicles.

And I suspect that the rangers will not give us any grief if we should overpopulate any individual site.
MANY, MANY THANKS FOR THOSE WHO RESERVED THEM TO FACILITATE THIS !!!
