EGL Winter 2017-2018

https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/4/5/2/6/chard_feb_2015b.jpg

Hey all.

I was cleaning out my camping closet and almost got dinged in the head by a pair of snowshoes. That's as good a sign as any to get the ball rolling on our winter hang.

I'd love to hear some ideas from all of you as to where you'd like to camp. I was for a venue that only required a short walk in and that might have some fishing opportunities. A few years ago Quiet and I overnighted at Silent Lake PP and that fit the bill; short stroll and trout.

Where: Let's hear some ideas.......

When: January 26-28

P.S. We should double check 76 Highboy's spot as he seems to be a bear-den hound.

I've been sorta slow to gather winter wear and equipment, guess im holding out for the more costly items (buy once, cry once) for items that matter to me. So as long as temps are within my range the date, location and theme work for me so far as i can tell. Was there many moons ago during summer.

Silent Lake would great with me. It's not too far from Kingston at all. Bought some canvas duffles for the toboggan today and I'm just itching for it to snow.

I'd be leaning more toward the Jan 26th than the February 2. I'm looking to go down to Alleghny National Forest Feb 9-11. I'd like to invite all EGLers to come down.(PA does touch a Great Lake) One person has mentioned interest in trecking across the border. So in the words of Bob Barker - "Come on Down!" https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php/141406-PA-gt-Allegheny-National-Forest-Morrison-Trail-gt-February-9-10-11

While we're at it, are we thinking of a "gearing up for backcountry" Valens hang for the first or second weekend of January?

After Jan 11th will work for me if we do the Valens thing.

Chard
12-11-2017, 14:54
Well, it seems like Feb 2-4 works better with more people, and I hope LuvmyBonnet can make it out.

As for the Gearing up, why don't we formalize our tradition and say that the second weekend of each year we try to start the year off right by getting together and freezing our butts off. First weekend for family, second weekend for old (cold?) friends. Valens has proven a perfect spot, being relatively close to a number of folks, excellent usage fees, but I'm not above considering other drive to locations in the future.

I noticed that Niagara mentioned after Jan 11th. If we wait until the 3rd or 4th weekends in January, we'll be butting right up on the back-country hang. If we go early on the first weekend then we'll likely have grumpy spouses and frankly, angry wives can freeze the blood worse than the coldest winter winds.

I think Valens has tended to be the second weekend in January the past for the reasons you mentioned so I think “formalizing” it is a good idea. I can’t guarantee that I can get Feb 2nd off but it will easier than Jan 26th.

If I recall, there was about a 15-25 minute walk from the car park to the lake. Snowshoes might be helpful, depending on the conditions and while a pulk is great, a simple 5' old fashioned toboggan works fine depending on the load. I think it might be helpful if everyone had enough space on a toboggan for half a dozen pieces of firewood. Last time we were there, the Park Ranger kindly delivered about one sh*tload of firewood, but we shouldn't count on it.

That being said, I haven't heard any other locations put forward.

Perhaps one caveat then, for your wife of course: an overloaded wood toboggan, combined with a less than stellar level of fitness can produce significant strain on both ones' coronary system and the good graces of ones' comrades.

BTW: Silent Lake offers Yurts, both electrical with electrical heating and non-electrical with wood stove heating, for the price of $140 and $100 respectively. They off of the main road and roughly half a kilometer from the spot I had in mind to camp.

I bought one of these plastic sleds, attached pvc with dynemma to a climbing belt and have what I thought was a pulk. ha ha.

Here are a few examples...

https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/4/5/2/6/sleds.jpg
Traditional toboggan

Accessible, runs great when ski-waxed prone to tipping when loaded too high

Pulk

Large carrying capacity, inexpensive(ish), wide and can push snow on new trails.

Freighter Toboggans

Da'Bomb!!! Large carrying capacity spread out over the length to keep the centre of gravity low and minimize tipping, depending on the material the drag can be extremely low, narrow profile allows it to track well on trail, flexible so it snakes over the terrain, downside: expensive

Full disclosure, I've only used the traditional toboggan but watch with envy as the freighter folks all but coast uphill.

Aye! That it is matey!

A bit of background: On that trip I put up a 5-man Canadian Army Arctic tent that had a aluminum centre pole with a 16" disk as base. In the chaos of tearing down the tent it got buried in the snow and left behind. Highboy and I went up the following weekend to recover it. It was very nice to snowshoe through the woods without dragging 160lbs of gear.

They also built half a dozen or so cabins last year, I believe they are available too. They are located at the day beach (https://reservations.ontarioparks.com/SilentLake?Map). I assume that parking lot is open and you could walk down the on hard water from there. I also suspect the comfort station is open as well. Don't forget your Xcounty skis there is groomed tack set.

Unfortunately I'm out for Valens. My brother & I will be attempting to snowshoe into his Muskoka property to see how realistic winter access might be (the township doesn't plough his road in winter so we're not sure how close we can get & park safely). Hoping it is possible to host a Winter group hang there ... a Summer or Fall hang there is definitely doable if the group is interested. Have fun!

That's too bad, I was looking forward to a whisker competition, but the idea of doing a hang on his property sounds great. It's too bad that we don't have access to a snowmobile. That'd make a backwoods hang on Crown land a breeze, even just to break trail and do pizza runs.

I also think a whiskey (Scotch please) competition could only end badly, although this time I believe I'd yield to the chap who regularly grills beer, or is that Bear Grylls?

ABSOLUTELY!!!!! I'll be posting a Spring EGL canoe trip thread right after Valens.

11 & 13 look nice, but we're not likely to get any trout on the French or in Killarney. I was hoping for Algonquin or maybe even a first trip up to Temagami this spring but I'm also open to anything.

Yeah I left it too long to get it to storage. I visit it to clean off snow and hope to move it when the weather breaks. Normally during the Spring/Summer/Fall it's shaded by the tree and I wash it with a marine soap that has a UV protectant.

Making it out is not 100% out of the question at this point. It's more like 50/50 but I don't want to get my hopes up.

I just gave Valens a call to give them the heads up about this weekend. Park's open however they're expecting a heavy snowfall beginning late Friday on into Saturday with up to 20cm of accumulation, and I was cautioned that they're not able to ensure that the roads will plowed (there's only 2 other guests in the park atm).

We should be able to get in Friday, but it might not be before May that we'll be able to get out. For my part, I'm thinking of bringing a pack of seeds or two. I know a couple of use have trucks, but a few only have sedans. Personally, I'm ok to risk it.

I will still be there. My sedan has winter tires so as long as we don't get four feet, I should be good to get outta there.

For the adventurous or those with new Pulks, Leaving the car parked at the entrance and hiking it in is an option. I think it is about a 2km hike from the entrance to where we camp. Might be fun :)

Hey all,

As of 9am, it looks like freezing rain early to mid-afternoon then it drops down to -13c with wind gusts up to 50 km/h. That area has shed branches and trees in the past (just read Deep Thought's account (https://hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php/28888-Eastern-Great-Lakes-Hang-Winter-2011-Trip-Report?highlight=Valens) from back in 2011) and if the trees are covered in ice, the chances will be even higher. Tucking into the cedars on the south end, or even across the road away from the washrooms, might be prudent.

Please keep your eyes on the road conditions and use your best judgement; no one will be offended if you choose to show up Saturday morning instead, as long as you bring hot coffee and timbits, and maybe a little duct-tape to patch up tarps.

Rushing to a hang isn't reason enough to risk your neck in a winter storm. If you haven't left already, I'd urge you to show up tomorrow morning after all of the roads have been salted.

Friday: Wicked ice storm makes travel treacherous, temperatures plummet, 8 hangers overnight
Saturday: Lovely but cold, huge bonfire all day, 5 hangers overnight
Sunday: I buggered off at the crack of dawn so I have no idea but I will say that my girls really appreciated their big Sunday breakfast courtesy of Dad.

Whisker Competition Winner: Iguana (unfair Viking advantage enhanced by judicious application of jojoba oil)

Niagara

No way it's a "drive of shame"! The whole point of our "gearing up" hangs is to let people field test their winter gear while at the same time having a bailout option in the event that there's an issue. I wouldn't call a test pilot bailing out during a failed test flight a shameful act.

Nay, "He who bails and drives away lives to hang another day!!!!"

We did wonder where you had gotten off to though.

P.S. cramps in a hammock are the very definition of hell. I've had double full leg cramps where shifting my legs to ease the pain in one caused a relapse in the other and have left me all but weeping. And as far as watering goes, I was up three times in the night to irrigate a little patch of snow, followed by a monumental struggle to get my two sleeping bags realigned. But that's the price to pay when you're a "tree-waterer".

Niagara
01-15-2018, 15:37
plus I know there is always the offer of 'extra' gear from the fine folks of the EGL, but ya those cramps were nasty, and made it hard to get comfortable for fear of'em coming back. (thinks to myself...."awesome... no one heard my gentle whimpering.......".)

Hi all,

Can I get a roll call of everyone planning on coming out to Silent Lake Feb 2-4, 2018? I'd like to give the Park a heads up and get their recommendations as to where they'd like a group of our size to camp. Who and when please.

As far as directions: Google Maps Link (https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Silent+Lake+Provincial+Park/@44.8981489,-78.0674159,13z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x4cd48b14d2540b9f:0x63d9e46530042 c43!8m2!3d44.9231957!4d-78.0712131?hl=en). The drive is about 2 hours from Yonge Street & Hwy 401.

Depending on who's coming in when, we could meet about halfway at the Lakefield Tim Hortons (https://www.google.ca/maps/place/139+Queen+St,+Lakefield,+ON+K0L+2H0/@44.4282202,-78.2681683,3a,75y,338.65h,79.84t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sQ5yG51GifM2Ggco-PoBDKw!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo2.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3 DQ5yG51GifM2Ggco-PoBDKw%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dsearch.T ACTILE.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D86%26h%3D86%26yaw%3D3 18.916%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656 !4m22!1m16!4m15!1m6!1m2!1s0x4cd4b579e2a98cb9:0x397 51546fa063322!2s139+Queen+St,+Lakefield,+ON+K0L+2H 0!2m2!1d-78.2685308!2d44.428517!1m6!1m2!1s0x4cd48b14d2540b9 f:0x63d9e46530042c43!2sSilent+Lake+Provincial+Park ,+1589+Silent+Lake+Park+Road,+Bancroft,+ON+K0L+1C0 !2m2!1d-78.0712131!2d44.9231957!3e0!3m4!1s0x4cd4b579e2a98c b9:0x39751546fa063322!8m2!3d44.428517!4d-78.2685308?hl=en) (139 Queen St, Lakefield, ON K0L 2H0) at, say noon (or earlier) on Friday or 7am on Saturday. How far from the cars do you think?

Not sure. We might be able to drive down to the lake, load and launch the sleds then go back and park and stroll (or bike) down unencumbered. I'll give the park a call and ask.

As for alternate venues, Beausoliel Island out of Honey Harbour is 4km over ice. Canada Parks has no problem with us camping there in the winter but procuring firewood from the island is frowned upon. Niger Lake outside Algonquin is an option, but I'd prefer the north end of the lake.

In the end, depending on snow cover, we'll have to decide whether we want to cold hike (Silent Lake) or winter camp (Algonquin and north). Ideally I would want to be no more than a kilometer from the cars either way. Call me wussy.

For my first winter trip, I am looking forward to snow and using my pulk. I have no experience in selecting a good place so I’m relying on your expertise.

Of the noted locations, Silent lake sounds good if it has snow. Otherwise I would think Frontenac because it is a shorter drive and would still be open to Killarney because I heard good things about it for winter camping.

There's two "campsites" along the north shore, one at the end of the spur road east of the marsh (1) and another little more protected one 100m further east along the shore. On this recycled map from last year, parking was in the clearing just off highway 60, not halfway up the road as shown below. This year, who knows.

Just a note: On the way out last year we saw some ice-fishermen just off the main point directly west of the island. No telling if they had any privileged information or knew what they were doing, but it's a bit of info.

Hey gang .. just checked on conditions my sister who lives in Huntsville.

She says the recent rains really beat down the snow in open areas but still lots in the bush. More snow starting on Wednesday and low temps should mean it'll stick around for the weekend. Ice thickness on Lake Vernon averages 18 inches, so lake travel will be ok with the usual precautions.

Hope that helps, have a great time!

Also, was anyone planning on bringing any live bait for fishing? There's a shop in Huntsville we can hit. Anyone have a bait bucket?

Whoever get's to Niger first, check for the campsite just east of the 1 on the map. There's a nice flat area just back from the shore and likely no bear dens nearby.

Plan B: In the unlikely event that Niger's inaccessible, let's meet about 6km east at the Algonquin Park West gate parking lot and update this thread with the news.

Was hoping to get in early thursday but, ugh,:( I've got jury selection to attend.
Planning for early friday am.

Jury duty temporarily postponed !!:)

I am in !
There is a possibility that the road in to niger is driveable. The rain last week melted a lot snow that was in the open.
We,ll see.

Something has come up and I can't make it. I was looking forward to trying out my new wool pants (I sewed 7" zippers into the pant legs). Maybe I'll go up next weekend.

Good luck with the fish.

Arrived at silent lake.
Drove car right up to the lake and unloaded the sleds.
Drive car back to parking lot near the highway.
Now hiking back to the lake.

Brrrrr...

are you camping at the north end of the lake? is there an open spot for a hot tent? just trying to decide whether to bring hammock or nice cozy warm tent. see you tomorrow.
