I currently am using my grand truck double hammock it's the kryptek one. I have a chance to get a skeeter beeter for 35 bucks. Dirt cheap. Should I buy it or take the plunge into the cottage venders for a new hammock?

My first hammock was a Skeeter Beater Pro and I found the net difficult to set up and it tore easily. It also tacoed so badly with me in it that I couldn't see out of it or catch a breeze. I am a big guy though, so if you're little it may be ok. My advice is to put that $35 towards a better hammock.

$35 is a good price on the Skeeter Beeter Pro. Depending on how tall you are, it may be very comfortable or not. Most of us here have moved onto 11' hammocks as the baseline for comfort. I'd say if you're approaching 6' or taller, definitely get an 11 footer.

I'm 6'1", and the SBP is pretty comfortable. But it is nowhere near as comfortable as my 11' Raven from Dream Hammock.

I believe Dutchware still has some 11' netless hammocks for $30-35. Add a Fronkey bug net, and you'll be out the door under $90- with better comfort and more modularity than the SBP. Of course I also highly recommend the Raven at $115.

I'm only 5'10" as long as it's the same length as the hammock I have now I should be comfortable. All the reviews I have read have been good. But who knows what a real review is. Grand trunk has been good to me so far with their customer service and what not. im hoping the skeeter beeter turns out to be a good hammock.

It's a decent hammock, but the hammock designs/fabrics offered by our cottage vendors blow it out if the water, in my opinion. The bug net on the Skeeter Beeter Pro isn't very good either. It's way too delicate.

Grand Trunk has always been known to have good customer service, though. The same can be said for the cottage vendors too. I was just like you when I got started with hammocks. I went with the Skeeter Beeter Pro, and thought it was awesome...that is until I got a Dream Hammock! There is no comparison. It's more comfortable, better made, and much lighter than the Grand Trunk.

Talked to the misses. We're going to wait til the end of the year for expensive hammocks she wants one too. Still to ongoing to look into the skeeter beeter. If I don't like it I'll give it to one of the kids and use the set up I have now

That's not a bad plan. I gave my Skeeter Beeter to my son, and he loves it! I don't regret getting it at all. I just found that I much prefer the longer hammocks. Get yourself two Ravens from Dream Hammock, and call it a day! Bug nets when you need them, stowable or removable when you don't. For all of the features, it's hard to beat for $115.

As is or with a few mods SBP is a nice hammock.....and grand trunk customer service is the absolute best I've dealt with.

Picked one up on closeout in my local Meijer grocery and stuff store. Not comparable to the cottage vendors, but a great first hammock for my 5yr old so she can hang with the big people. For $35 who cares if it gets shredded?

My GT Kryptek is 80 inches wide. if you're taller the 60 inch Skeeter Beater may be tight.

I started with a skeeter beater pro. just be gentle with it. I put a structural ridgeline on mine and also sewed tie-outs so that I didn't get banana-tized. for $35 you will only need a tarp.
still Hanging Tough...

I have one too. did the RL mod. Works well. It's now one of many netted hammocks in the pile, it has a home.

Jump in the deep end with a cottage hammock. There is no comparison. It is night and day difference.

I bought a Skeeter Beater several years ago and used it on a three day trip. I soon upgraded to an 11' Dutchware. Regardless of maker, I think you will find your money better spent on a 11' hammock. Of course you could keep the beater for a loaner.
