For those of you who have wanted to make your own SpinnUL tarp, but could not justify paying more for the fabric than a complete tarp would cost, here is your chance:
Warbonnetguy has agreed to provide the DIYers on this forum with his SpinnUL at $15/yard. The fabric is 59" wide and weighs between 0.95 and 1.0 oz/yd^2. To make this happen, we will have to get at least 50 yards. Brandon will ship the fabric to me, I will cut it and send it out. The final price per yard is going to be a bit over $15/yd, depending on the shipping cost from Brandon to me. I will charge actual shipping cost for each package.
Anybody interested?
This would be great for making the end doors for any tarp also. :)
Grey in color I am assuming?
Count me in for 3 yards

Is this just good for tarps? I was thinking of making a DIY topquilt. Would it be good for that? Or should I just use the 1.1oz ripstop I've got.
Kagitora,
This material would probably not be good for a quilt unless you were looking to make a vapor barrier style for cold weather.

I'm in once I figure out how much I want. I've been wanting a spin tarp!

I wouldn't use it for a quilt, but it does have plenty of uses. I use a bishop bag made of Spinn for my Traveler and I use mostly Spinn stuff sacks on long hikes. I've also made a pack cover with it, but I almost never take it because of my love for the Packas. Bet you could make a Packa out of it. Oooooo, that would be nice and light.

So far, we have
TZBrown: 3 yards
HappyCamper: tbd
Schneiderlein: 16 yards
Total: 19 yards
Need two or three more tarp makers.

Actually, head over to the Warbonnet (http://www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/tarps.php) website, Brandon has made some doors kits from SpinnUL and found that they don't work as well as Silnylon does.

Oh, who am I'm I kidding. I like to modify stuff, but I hate sewing projects. Which is weird because my mother loved to sew. Apparently I didn't get that gene. Please take me off of this deal. I'd order it then just end up selling it to someone else here! :) Even though I'm not going to take part, thanks for organizing the group buy, S.

Just giving this a bump. Anybody out there who wants to make their own SpinnUL tarp?

How big of a winter tarp could you reasonably make with a 59" width fabric? I'm interested in the group buy, but wasn't planning on making a tarp until after I have completed a quilt project. Oh, and what color will it be?

You will probably loose 2" to ridgeline seam and rolled hem on each side of the tarp, leaving you with 114" total width. Brandon's tarps made from the same fabric are 117" wide, but I don't know how he does the seams. The color is a light grey.

So, if a person wanted 114 inches by 156 inches, one would need to purchase 9 yards? (59"-2" for ridgeline, X2 for 114 wide, and 13 feet length=312 ", or 8.67 yards)

I think that's right. That would make a big tarp!

Wouldn't it be 59 x 2 = 118 - 2 for seams = 116? I guess Brandon is pretty good with seams and doesn't need a half inch on each end and a full inch on the ridgeline seam (half on each side)

If you're binding the tarp with gross grain like OES then you can get by with a single fold for the hemming, so more like 3/8" on the hem and 1" on ridgeline. (NOTE: I do not know what kind of folding, if any, OES does under the gg binding - I'm just mentioning that you could gain a fraction of an inch if you're going to bind it).
Honestly, I wouldn't sweat that 1" or 2". Two widths of 59", no matter your seam allowance, is a large tarp.

Brandon didn't use grosgrain edge trim on his spinn tarps, it wasn't necessary for a strong edge. Saves weight and materials to use a rolled hem. I don't know if a tarp with as deep of cat cuts as a MacCat has would work as well w/o the edging on the spinn material. Brandon's tarps also have a binding along the ridgeline, but am not sure how the pieces are folded together, I would think it would save a fraction of an inch by using the binding strip, and still be stronger.

I would like to, but so far what I've read indicates this material isn't very durable. Anyone tested otherwise?

I think Cannibal posted some story of a huge tree limb crashing into his SpinnUL tarp without damage. I have no experience with SpinnUL, so I don't really know about durability first hand.

I could be up for a couple yards to make beaks and stuff sacks out of.

I'll take a yard if it gets going. Gonna make me a blackbishop bag, peak bag, and a few stuff sacks.

I don't think there is enough interest to make it to 50 yards. Unless something happens in the next few days, I'm probably going to give up on it.

I'm surprized this hasn't gotten much traction. I am thinking about it but I have decided that I wouldn't make something if I can't improve it. I made a Grizz Beak and saved myself a lousy $15 form what 2QZQ sell. A spinn mambajamba is $160 and in order to buy the 8 yards needed it would cost 120 for the spinn. So that is $40 savings and it would take me a long time to sew a tarp. It would be worth the $40 to have Brandon make it. It also leave me more time to sit around and eat pie. I like pie.

Yeah, I'm a little surprised myself. Well, I am aiming for as close to 100% DIY as I can get. Considering the time spent making the equipment, most everything I make is more expensive than store bought stuff. But with SpinnUL, it just hurts too much to pay $158.59 for 8 yards from thru-hiker (including shipping to SC) when a complete tarp is the same price.

I am giving up on this group buy due to lack of interest.
