i finally got around to using Picasa to put a folder on the web so i could just give a link for anyone interested.
so here's a few shots from last week end in the mt rogers area.

the first night i had a friend w/ me... second night just me & the Creator.
soooooo peaceful.
maybe some of you (ewker) could id some of the plants.
i wore the hammockforums shirt & talked to quite a few people about hammocks. more than not seemed genuinely interested.
night time lows were 59 & 58°f. nice sleeping weather.

nice pics Tim, did you camp at the same place you did last Thanksgiving?

The Wood Sorrel was right. The 4th pic looks like a dead Trillium. I am not sure about the ones with berrys or the tall plant.

HOI is the flower/tree expert. Hopefully he wil check in and see this post.

I will send you my webshots link from last weekend in the Smokies. I did get pics of a couple of bears

yep, i choose the same two trees. nice view & a breeze.
besides, the ridge runner told me that the water source at rhodo gap was the better water source over thomas knob & pine mt.
i thought about you & the creek dancer when i was getting water<g>. i believe that's my 1st encounter w/ either of you.

Not too bad, I'm sure the drive would be worth it. There are a few more places I want to hang this year, and Mt Rogers is one of them, along with RRG, Mt Mitchell and somewhere in Transylvania Co, NC. I have the Transy Co trip coming up on a camping trip with my son at the end of this month. I'm hoping we can find a good campsite/hanging area near Looking Glass falls (http://www.ncwaterfalls.com/looking_glass1.htm) or Sliding Rock (http://www.ncwaterfalls.com/sliding_rock1.htm). If anyone is close and has the time, they're welcome to join us.

Edit: It's about 5.5-6 hrs for me to get to the Mt Rogers area.

Hi Hooch, let me know when you're planning your Sliding Rock trip. I'd be interested in going, if it works out schedule-wise.

Hi Hooch, let me know when you're planning your Sliding Rock trip. I'd be interested in going, if it works out schedule-wise. NCP, I don't have exact dates set in stone yet. However, as it stands now, I have from July 29-August 5 off, so it'll be in between there somewhere. We're planning on spending 3 or 4 nights there and then going to Charlotte/Hickory area to visit family and friends a couple days.

Ok. Well, just PM me as soon as you get the schedule ironed out! (I'd sure hate to hijack a MODERATOR's thread...)

I'd sure hate to hijack a MODERATOR's thread Mr. Moderator can always move threads and posts if he needs to. I don't think it's a big deal though, he's invited too. :D I'll give you a yell as soon as I know when we're going for sure. As it stands right now, I'm eyeballing June 30-August 2, so I can make it into Charlotte by my birthday on August 4.

Great pics/movies you got there Tim. Did the ponies stay near your camp site all night or were they just passing through? I really want to get back to Mt. Rogers in the near future. It's a beautiful place.

Sounds good Hooch.

Tim, did the ponies leave you any "presents" around your camp or try to eat your food? Did you run out to try to pet the deer?

Tim, did the ponies leave you any "presents"? Um.....yuk. This coming from a nurse. :p

first pic is blue cohosh, second pic is probably false hellebore (yellow lady slipper is a remote possibility also), the trillium seed pod is correct, the bush with the red berries is probably elderberry but it may be mountain ash (usually mtn. ash has more leaflets per leaf than what is shown in the pic)

I enjoyed the mountain views. The closest thing we have to mountains 'round here (non-Chicago Illinois) are highway overpasses.

Did those ponies come and check you out when you in the hammock? What a way to wake up!

Oh, by the way, we'll probably stay at Davidson River Campground, since I'll have my son with me. It's fairly close to Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock, from what I've read.

Where did you actually camp? I have to start looking for places to camp in the cooler parts of the country. Looks like it wouldn't take long to get there from where I live. I would love for my son to see those ponies up close like that.

it aint botherin me... just a thread about gettin out w/ the hammock<g>.
of course, having another thread for that trip would be less confusional when you get a little closer to detailing the trip<g>.
i'd like to join you if it works out. i've used davidson river campground once for a base camp. sliding rock is just up the road.
also i've backpacked not far away in shinning rock wilderness area, & did another loop near the fish hatchery.
there's more to see in that area than you could do in a month's time.
the place i broke my back (panthertown valley) is maybe 45 minutes west of there.

to answer a few other questions... i didn't camp where the ponies came up to the hammock. i moved there to have breakfast & read the bible lesson.
reason being that i was camped further away from the at on an east facing hill side, & when the sun came up, it went from 58°f to better than 80 (putting the thermometer in the shade) in less than two hours.
i was getting uncomfortably hot. but when i moved up the hill to better shade, but where i was still getting a breeze, i soon found myself needing to zip the legs back on my pants & put socks on.
all this was in the rhododendron gap area.
so i didn't see the ponies until a couple hours after i woke up, but there have been several other trips where they were in our camp when we woke up.
one trip, one of my friends woke up just after sunrise to something licking their tent. it was a pony<g>.
oh yeah, for some reason i did awake to hear a small herd (probably a doz or so) ponies running down a hill side near by. i didn't know why they were running, but i knew i wasn't in a place they were likely to be in there path, so i went right back to sleep.
i think it kinda spooked the two couples just up the hill from me the way they asked about it next morn:p
that was my second night (alone). the 1st night (w/ a friend) was not to far from the elk garden parking area.
and yes, they leave little presents every where... just got to pay attention to where you walk:eek:

thanks HOI. i'm going to make note in the captions under those pictures.
elderberry came to mind but i just wasn't sure. i'll try to find a plant id source & check it out.

Thanks for inviting me to check out the site. Your pictures are great. I met you on Saturday (7-7-07) near the Thomas Knob Shelter.
I got my hammock for Christmas and camped with it the first time that weekend. There is a learning curve, but I enjoyed it and had a very restful night Saturday.
Friday night wasn't quite as restful.

Looking forward to hanging out more on backpacking trips. If you would like company next time you go, I may be able to join the fun.
