Make room on your calenders for November 2, 3, 4, 2018 for the 3rd Annual Loco Libre Gear Piney Woods Hang. This will be a great weekend of relaxing in the infamous Jersey Pine Barrens. Last year around 50 folks showed up, and while I can't promise the Jersey Devil will show up I can promise the crew from Loco Libre Gear will! We have the Batona Camp on Carranza Road (directions to come) from noon Friday until noon Sunday.

You can sign up HERE (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IaD1SfNsdEExvi9D9ivoEWo8wQIMlZRGT4qmgYdIPTY/edit#gid=0)

Directions

Batona Campsite is located at GPS coordinates N 39 46.639 W 74 37.883

From The North and Philadelphia Area – From the area of the junctions of Route 70 and Route 206, travel south on route 206 for one mile and turn left on Carranza Road (648). Travel 8.7 miles to the Carranza Memorial. Across from the Carranza Memorial is a dirt road with a sign that says Batona Campsite. Make a left onto the dirt road and the campsite is 1/2 mile back.

From The Hammonton Area – Take Rt 206 north, and after passing the Atsion ranger station travel approximately 4.5 miles to the first traffic light (Tuckerton Road). Make a right onto Tuckerton Road and follow to the end (2nd stop). Turn left and at the next stop sign turn right onto Carranza Road. Continue for 5 miles to the Carranza Memorial. . Across from the Carranza Memorial is a dirt road with a sign that says Batona Campsite. Make a left onto the dirt road and the campsite is 1/2 mile back.

Meals

There are fire pits available on site for cooking if you so desire.
There is space on the sign up sheet for any extra sides or such you may want to contribute to the group meals, but don't feel obligated.

The menu has been set:

Saturday Breakfast - Pancakes, with the rest TBD

Saturday Dinner - Beef stew, Chicken Jambalaya, and Chili.

Of course there will be other things that folks are bringing like bacon, brats, etc., so no one should go hungry.

Facilities

Tons of trees to hang from, but ground dwellers are welcome too!
There is a hand pump for water, and privies for, well, you know.

Activities

The Batona Trail passes through the area, and Apple Pie Hill fire tower is a short (2.5 mile?) hike away.
The Carranza Memorial is right outside of camp, and historic Batsto Village is a close drive.

Raffle

The raffle will be held BEFORE dinner. I like the way raffle and dinner flowed last year so we're going to give that a try again. Raffle tickets will be $5 each, and you will be able to purchase then on Saturday afternoon. All profits from the raffle this year will again be donated to St. Judes Childrens Hospital.

Site Reservations

No one is required to reserve a site. If you choose to help us with our reservations we ask that only NJ residents reserve sites, as out of state campers pay a higher rate. All reservation fees will be refunded at the hang, unless you choose to contribute your fees to St. Judes along with the raffle funds.

It's getting close, the weather is cooling, and I'm looking forward to a great time in the Piney Woods!

If I were to drive up Saturday, would there be any difficulty obtaining a place to hang and set up a tent? I am traveling with my wife and daughter from Maryland. Are reservations required? Are there fees to camp? Unfamiliar with Batona Camp area, and wanted to know the procedures for checking in. I expect to arrive on Saturday afternoon and leave out Sunday AM. Thanks for the info.

Sign up on the sign up sheet is all the reservations you need.
I'm pretty sure George is taking care of the fees.
Check in by finding George when you arrive - he's a good guy - If you don't what he looks like - ask anybody.
Dozens of helpful people will be happy to help find a spot and set up.
Try not to park or tent in spots suitable for a hammock.

Site 4 reserved for 2 people for 2 nights.

Thanks. I've met George before at the MAHHA hang. I'll seek him out. I wonder if Batona Camp is where the infamous Pine Barrens episode of the Sopranos was filmed. Probably my favorite HBO show of all time. Gandolfini was incredible in his role, RIP.

While the Pine Barrens episode was filmed in north Jersey, there are two things that tell you it wasn't filmed in the Pine Barrens:

1) There are no pine trees in the entire episode,
2) There are hills in the episode, lots of hills. The real Pine Barrens is flat as a board, with basically one hill in the entire one million acres (Apple Pie Hill at elevation 200 ft.).

I’ve never seen somewhere on the east coast as flat as the pine barrens. I hiked several miles during the winter hang, and never went more than +/- 10’ in elevation according to my phone. Usually, I hate flat hikes, but Batona is beautiful.

It’s also where the Forest Floor pattern was born. 99% of the assets in that pattern came from photos from the 1st Loco Libre Hang. :)

I’ll be the guy wandering around taking pics of the ground ;)

Yep...

6, 8, 12 miles... would be fine. I'd like to drop my car at a trail head or someplace close to one and be making miles early on Friday. Shoot for a mid day arrival.

Haven't figured out Sunday yet..
Open to suggestions.

Why from the north? I am coming from Long Island. Drop the car north is easier. Plus would be easier to bum a ride out on Sunday going north.. if I decided not to back track.

Is there a compelling reason to NOT do a SoBo?

This map (https://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/docs/batona14web.pdf) shows "official" parking at Ongs Hat, Lebanon Fire Tower, and Pakim Pond / Brendan Byrne camp at 18.6, 14, and 10.7 miles from Batona camp on the Batona trail. One could also (presumably) hike to Batona camp from Atsion following the railroad tracks most of the way in about 6.3 miles or NoBo on the Batona from Batsto at about 13 miles.

No compelling reason on direction - I just asked 'cause it won't make a whole lot of difference in drive time - Batsto will be a longer drive.

Parking at Atsion or Lebanon aka Brendan T Byrne office works, Brendan Byrne being north. From the BT Byrne office to Batona is about 14 miles but you can park at the wash house near the campgrounds (just past Pakim Pond) and make it a 10 mile walk.

The RR tracks from Atsion are doable but covered in tall grass at points and the lone star tick nymphs are brutal right now. Definitely prep your clothes, gear and self if choosing that route, wise to do anyway, but little tick nests, ugh.

Normally I’d step right up and offer to shuttle you to/from wherever but my future isn’t clear enough to commit. I’d say catching a ride out to your car or whatever shouldn’t be a problem on Sunday if needed.

Pretty sure you could train it to/from Hammonton and it would give someone a chance to grab some terrific Mexican food in town.

Do you think we'll still have 'em Nov 2?

Bottom line, yes.

“Normally” June-Aug is the nymph period but the whole lifecycle thing from larvae to nymph to adult can take up to 2 years with nymphs able to go about 15 months without a “blood meal”.

Generally in my experience, ticks favor grasses and some bushes. I avoid deer trails to some extent but definitely avoid common deer choke points. And it’s the Pine Barrens so just do the normal tick thing.

Not trying to create tick paranoia but if one were to plan to hike known grassy areas for any length, I wouldn’t slack on Anti tick SOPs. Given that the RR was a solid option for Mike, I put my 2 cents in. That and I know someone who just tap danced thru a tick nest and they are bummin’. Was at their house though, not camp.

FWIW, I’ve been out to Batona and other areas several times in the past 3 months with little to no tick issues. Skeeters were more of a problem during regular feeding times.

I had plotted this route last year but ultimately wasn't able to make the hang.. Parking at Brendan Byrne camp at Rte 72 and going SoBo to Batona Camp.. GaiaGPS has that leg of the Batona Trail at 13.1 miles. Not sure of the discrepancy, but is what it is. There's no elevation gain/loss to talk about so it's an easy trek. That would get me to Batona early afternoon.

This is about what I came up with.. about 13 - 14 miles. on that terrain, totally doable with an early start.

I am a tick magnet so I'll pass on the RR tracks.

I am a tick magnet so I'll pass on the RR tracks.

I hope you use permethrin because the entire Pine Barrens is tick-central. I use the heck out of permethrin, and try to avoid certain areas that I know are ticky. I've hiked the railroad tracks several times, and as long as you use permethrin you should be fine.

I'm a little concerned that you think you reserved group site A when I saw it already reserved over the weekend. I'm also concerned that you think Group Site A was the last site left when I can see that sites 6 through 10 are still available.

Is this some kind of phone thing? Did you receive an e-mail confirming that you got site A for 11/2/2018 and 11/3/2018?

I received confirmation immediately afterward. All others had been taken. Someone best confirm with office that these aren't being over/under booked.

Batona sites 6, 7, 8, and 10 are still available - Grab 'em up Jerseycans before more strangers get between you and breakfast. If you don't yet have an account on the state's new system, now is a great time to make one (and a reservation for Batona camp in Wharton State Forest for 2 people, 2 cars, 2 nights starting November 2nd.).

Let the Jersey guys do it. Those sites may have already been grabbed, seems to depend on what site options are selected.

I take it no one has checked with the office to confirm that we actually have the sites we think we have and that the website hasn't in fact sent out multiple confirmations (overbooked)?

You “could” but you have to show Driver’s License when picking up the reservation and the VA DL may raise an issue. You could specifiy a NJ resident as the Primary Occupant and then they would have to show ID. All too cumbersome too bother.

No doubt some NJ folks, once certain of attending, will grab the remaining sites. Talked to a couple folks this past weekend who were nearly committed to attending but then again, it could have just been the stew talking.

All right Jersticularians, it's time to step up and reserve up.

By all appearances there's two sites filled with "others" - maybe nudists - or worse.

According to the sign up sheet we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 12, and A.

6 and 7 are still available.

8 and 11 are reserved by strangers - strangers in the pine barrens. We can only presume they are the hell-spawn of Mother Leeds.

Get 'em while we're still here.

Step up, it's time.

What's up with Krust? He used to be so reliable. If he said he was coming, he came. Has he got a girlfriend occupying his time? Is work getting the best of him?

Nah, he's just lame these days. Blowing off every camping trip to go to the bar or go bowling.

Hey guys. What do you think about a competitive apple-bobbing competition? My thought is that, instead of bobbing for apples out of a five-gallon bucket, we bob for apples in Skit Branch! Wouldn't that be really fun? Since the water near the shore is a bit stagnant, I was thinking we should move it on out where the water flows a bit. Maybe we can get a vendor to supply hip waders for all contestants.

And jellyfish can make the winner an apple cobbler in her dutch oven!

Maybe we could make it like a triathlon: apple-bobbing, cornhole, and knife-throwing competition. Just thinking out loud.

Can we make it a little more complicated? It really needs to be a challenge if the winner gets a cobbler.

Okay we'll add something hammock-specific (dump the knife-throwing). An Amsteel splicing competition! Maybe we can have a continuous loop, dogbone, soft shackle and whoopie sling splice-off.

I'd be up for a splice-off.... the apple bobbing..hmmmm... no so much.

Maybe an 'un-splicing' contest.. contestents have to unsplice a fixed eye, end bury and double diamond knot... That's a little more complicated. The contest can start Friday and run the whole weekend. Going to need that much time.

Anybody can splice, but unsplicing? That takes talent. The finale can be "first person to undo a whoopie sling with the adjustable loop pulled through (forgot the bead)." And since it ain't easy, there may be no winner at all. That's the kind of complexity we're looking for!

Hey Chris. Yes, as we booked everything. Of course, save the trees for the hammocks. Site 6 and 7 have less trees if I remember correctly.

Thinking if we park a truck at either end of the “road” that runs through the middle of camp we open up a lot of room for ground pounders and hangers alike. Rangers like to keep the perimeter U road clear but I’ve never had issues with vehicles parked in the middle.

How are we fixed for firewood? I’m bringing some but I need to tarp it tomorrow morning before the storm hits or it’ll still be wet next weekend.

Looks like Monkey has a good start on the pallet stack but no doubt could always use more.

You're watching the weather eight days before the hang?:scared: When it's that far out, I usually check the weather on https://www.astrology.com. They're much more accurate!

I’ve seen a few dogs around camp.

If you can, make sure the pup is licensed and you have rabies paperwork handy in case a Ranger wants to check pupper’s papers. Never seen it happen but best to be prepared.

Technically the dog should be associated with a site and $5 paid to the guvment but....

Temps will be mild. Guess I don’t need to pack for this hang like I do for the Jersey Winter Hang.

Just remember to subtract at least 10 degrees from the expected low, so the low could be 27* F. Heck, one year, the expected low at the NJ Winter Hang was 18* F, but the actual low was -3* F. That's a 21* difference!

So theoretically, the Saturday night low could be 16* F. It's happened before!
