My wife and I are taking a trip to New Zealand in January and are just getting into hammocking. We weren't planning on doing any camping because we didn't want to haul our tent, but now that we have nice packable hammocks we are exploring our options. I know there are some places that don't allow hammocking, but I'm wondering if anybody has any recommendations on hammocking spots. We would only be camping in the South Island, and are leaning more towards the west side of the island. We won't have our full backpacking setup, so car-camping or short walk-in sites would be ideal if those exist. We aren't looking for multi-day treks, but rather quick stops to better experience NZ as an alternative to hotels along our travels. Thanks for any input!

NP's New Zealand....choose an area, choose camping sites & email the contact info at the bottom of the page if you have any queries about hanging at campsites. Shouldn't be a problem though.

I hope your hammocks have a bugnet....:scared:

Just be prepared for cold/wet weather at short notice.
Yes, even in "summer".

Apart from that, have a great time!
New Zealand is fantastic.

Thanks! I also found an app, Ranker's Camping NZ, which seems to have some good info on a range of campsites. Now to start planning and booking...
