Algonquin Fall Paddle

October 4-6, 2019.

Anyone interested a weekend getaway to take in some fall colours? I was thinking about an easy paddle in and a big pot of soup, something like Pen, Parkside Bay, Ragged or even Ralph Bice. It's Algonquin, almost anywhere will be wonderful, so we can take what's available.

October 18-20th will almost assuredly be past the peak colours in the maples, although the tamaracks will be coming into their own.

Update: Oct 3-6, 2019 on Ralph Bice has been booked.

If I can change my plans for the 4th I’m in. I’ll let you know ASAP.

Timing is impeccable, just last night my better half and I decided we would go for a paddle Oct 4-6. Count us in.

I will be in Muskoka for a buddy's bday bash so hopefully we all get to see some colours. Enjoy.

I bit the bullet and booked Oct 3-6 on Ralph Bice Lake. Access 3 takes a little longer to get to, but the paddle's a bit shorter.

I also extended it to include the Thursday to allow for some of our eager beavers to get up and check out the lake.

Hopefully the two island sites at the East end are available. They're truly amazing. Failing that, a scenic site on the North shore would do just fine.

I think I'd be interested in this. This route would be looking at 2 portages, 135m and 295m?

Yup. It'll be a walk in the park. Do bring the canoe though.

What, no love for the big green beast!?! No Canadian Sherpas for this trip. Canoe it is.
Anyone have a physical address or gps point for access 3?
Debating if I can take off work Thursday and Friday....
Hoping to see some colors as last year the change was quite subtle.

Apparently, we are scheduled to have my new canoe outfitted that weekend. Sorry to miss out on this outing. Let me introduce my new boat...the "Starry Night." :boggle:

Ok.

The following weekend's going to be Canadian Thanksgiving, so I was thinking that we put our culinary thinking caps on and come up with a legendary Bushcraft Thanksgiving dinner of our own on Saturday night. I don't mean excessive volume; we always have way too much food. I'd prefer to sample those family recipes that make Thanksgiving's so special for each of us. The only rule is that they need to be prepared completely on site. No store bought shortcuts for we'EGL.

My family has a Ukrainian tradition of a white mushroom sauce that is my own personal Kryptonite. No one does it well as dear old Grandma used to make it, but we try. It goes on top of anything but on this occasion I just might try making up a batch of my classic cabbage rolls in the old Dutch oven.

I challenge someone to take on the main course! If there's a double carry required to bring in the ingredients, suck it up butter-cup.

Tell us what you're thinking of bringing so we have a comfortable table set.

P.S., If you're not a die hard "experimental foodie" do not despair, a good appetite and maybe a bottle of wine goes a long way.

For my part, I'm thankful that over the last decade, I've been able to dip a paddle with some of the most wonderful people I've ever met through the EGL. True friends share portages. To those who've paddled and those who still paddle, I raise a toast.

THAT'S THE SPIRIT!

it's amazing how many of Baba's recipes start with "cut up bacon and fry, add chopped onion..." I'm not sure i want to be frying bacon up there.
but kielbasa and sauerkraut with onion, mustard and rye bread is a good start.

FYI: 76 Highboy dehydrated sauerkraut with great success a while back.

Sadly I'll have to miss both trips. Somehow I'm coaching two basketball teams right now so my Fridays are all booked.

Sadly I'm out too. Spent this past weekend helping Whet Newdell install the woodstove in the Yurt. He needs help to finish & the only time he has free is the coming weekend.

Wondering if the Barron Canyon is still a possibility or is it too late now?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190930/d36cfbde692d15df82b8f7bc79622015.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190930/25671d80d43db3d7f81894461539f4cb.jpg

I maybe out too. My body is a bit beat up from the ADK's over the weekend. Great time but I'm sore.
I'd offer to help with the yurt but I'd probably just be in the way.

Hi,

Looks like there'll only be a few of us heading in this weekend. As far as I can tell, there's Iguana and his wife, Cruiser51 and myself. I'm not sure if Brantwing and/or Rand said they'd be coming. Since Ralph Bice is a pretty big lake, it might be easier if we went in as a group.

I originally had this booked as a Friday the 4th to Sunday the 6th trip, but added on the Thursday so guys like Keewaykeno and Highboy could go in early if they wanted. Since neither of them are coming and Cruiser51 (and company?) are arriving Friday, I'm thinking of dropping the Thursday and just meeting up with everyone at the Kearney Park office Friday morning at around 9am.What do you think?

Incidentially, it's supposed to get pretty chilly Friday night with an expected low of -2°C.

Brantwing and I will be coming in on Friday, assuming you are looking at opening the park office.

Currently making a new under quilt, saw that -2C forecast, I hate being cold and the one that I have been taking is summer weight

I have to pickup a rental tandem from some undetermined location/outfitter, so i'm not sure what time we will be there. We will be at the outfitter for when they open.

I think I'll be able to make it out this weekend. It's unfortunate that it's a smaller group as I was going to take this opportunity to try roasting a whole turkey by the fire. The smallest one I could find is 11.25 lbs.

Excellent news! Also, would a brace of Cornish hens be an alternative?

I bought a turkey sized cooler last night, so I'm committed to bringing the turkey now.

Hey all,

PM me whatever you want to contribute to the Saturday night Thanksgiving dinner. EGL Rules don't ever require you to bring anything but an appetite, but it would be a drag if we only had 15 pounds of instant mashed potatoes to enjoy. Not to say that I wouldn't be grateful, but it doesn't challenge my pallette very much.

For the indecisive, think dessert. No one's ever gone to hell for bringing a pumpkin pie.

I'd like to post a menu if I could.

We are sad to be missing this one. My bud only turns 40 once otherwise we would be there. Heather was pondering, just last night, which dish we would have contributed. Thankful for a great group of internet weirdos to adventure with.
