Hey gang,

Just like last year, a bunch of us are going to head over to Valens for an overnighter after the 3rd Annual Winter Camping Symposium held that Saturday afternoon, November 23rd at the University of Waterloo.

Hopefully we'll get our traditional site 134 or somewhere thereabouts and enjoy a hot fire, good food and maybe even a bit of gear swapping.

For all those regulars, we'll see you there. For all of those new folks interested in coming by to enjoy some good times, everyone's welcome even if it's just for dinner.

See you there!

I'm going Friday night. If there are others, we could carpool to the Symposium. Whet Newdell is probably coming Saturday with a load of firewood.

Aiming for Friday night too.

Tickets are sold out online.
I've got 2 friends coming up from Pittsburgh on Friday. We have our tickets. An overnight in my backyard and then we'll head up to the symposium Saturday morning and then stay at Valens overnight.
I don't think I'll be bringing my swap gear as the car might be a little packed.

Hiya all,

If anyone's who's planning on coming out to Valens has a Smokehouse hot tent, I'd be much obliged if you brought it out so I can have a look at some of its features.

Also, if anyone has a Bushbox LF from Bushcraft Essentials, I'd love to see one of those in action as well.

So demanding!

Cheers.

I'm also looking at a Smokehouse so I'd second Chard's request...

i though I was helping a buddy move on this weekend but as it turns out I am not.
I will bring my smokehouse and stove and accessories and set it up.
I MAY consider selling it , IF the price is right.
Cash is king! I will also bring other gear to swap, trade, sell, give away.

Is anyone else interested in a gear swap, trade, sell or give out ?

I have a bunch of things that are in need of a home that I will bring along. Just want it to go to someone who will make use of it.

Myself and Traycer (we attended last year's Jan 11-13th Valens "Gearing Up" hang) are planning on heading up early to camp at Valens on the Friday, scoot over to the symposium in the morning and then return for Saturday night.

@toastywaffle and I are planning to leave Toronto around noon on Friday and head to Valens early. We've been to the January 2019 EGL group hang when somebody else organized the site booking, firewood, etc. If we're the first ones there, how should we handle it? Grab site 134? I understand the park office is closed on Friday.

Chard
11-18-2019, 17:01
Hiya Traycer,

Site 134, right.

It looks like quite a few of us are showing up on Friday, myself included. If the park office is closed (I wonder why, I'll call tomorrow), we should be able to get through the gate by getting a permit from the machine using a credit card.

I'll call a chap in the area about firewood, but it'd be best to use a 4x4 to pick it up. Scrap wood from home would be useful for Friday.

KeeWayKeno
11-18-2019, 17:20
Dry scraps would be helpful as kindling but no need for firewood ... I and/or Whett Newdell will bring some (for the customary nominal fee in liquid form).

Disregard my concern... I thought I remembered something about the front gates only being staffed on weekends, but I think that might have been in January the last time we went. We're coming up in a pretty small car not suited for hauling wood, but will gladly contribute money towards the firewood fund!

FYI, I'm not planning on bringing the smoker as I'm still not sure what time I can make it on Friday, and I doubt we'd have time to smoke anything on Saturday after the symposium. I can bring it to the winter checkout weekend, assuming I can make it.

Well, I gave Valens a call this morning and they confirmed that on Fridays the front gate is usually closed as the staff are out and about in the park. Access is by means of the permit machine and requires a valid credit card.

Hello,

Thank you to everyone who showed up to the Valens hang and was able to share food and some laughs. It was a great hang as always and I won’t need to eat for a week!

I seem to have left my billy pot at the campsite. It is in one of those green cordura bags and should was sitting on the picnic table with the double burner. If anyone happened to pick it up I thank you. If you could pm me or let me know who may have it so I can pick it up that would be great. Thank you

Hope to see you all at the next hang.

@toastywaffle and I stopped by the Princess Auto on Dixie Rd in Mississauga on our way home, and they had a skid of about 50 of their portable wood stoves for $68.88. Flue is only 2" diameter, so I guess we'll see how well it burns.

A couple of years back we settled the second weekend of each new year as the first EGL hang of the year. "First weekend for family, second weekend for friends" made it easier for us older folks to remember what to mark on the calendar. Besides, there's nothing like tacos in the snow.

Would that work for you?

"First weekend for family, second weekend for friends"

Weekend of January 11 works for me, although I'll go with whatever the consensus/executive decision will be. Will probably try to stretch it out an extra day either by coming up on Friday or leaving on Monday. I'll check in with a few of my other friends who are now interested after seeing last year's photos!
