This morning I ordered a 40º Carolina Reaper with synthetic insulation (UP). Im very curious how it performs. I love down but I spend a lot of time on and around the water in the not-so-cold months. Down and water just don't mix. Right now Im using top and under quilts in warmer months made with Apex. I figured since there is a multi week lead time I may as well go ahead and get it ordered so Ill have it when its needed. Now the wait begins. I must say Im more excited to try out this insulation than I have been with any other quilt I've owned.

Sweet! I myself am getting closer to the end of the 7ish week wait. Although I am now kind of second guessing myself on ordering 0 degree quilts. We are having a mild winter and its already February..

It'll be worth it. I ordered a 20º Nunatak top quilt last winter and I didn't get it until summer. I had it for many months before I got to use it for the first time (Last weekend). Essentially, you have to convince yourself that there is not a 7 week lead time until you get it....there is a 7 month lead time before you can use it. Either way, you'll be happy you have it the first time you get to use it.

Cool... I have a LL 20º Cayenne Pepper synthetic top quilt & under quilt & they perform great.
I didn't realize George was making synthetic quilts again. Is your quilt a custom order?

I specifically asked for the cayenne pepper and he said he no longer works with apex. He told me he can use an insulation called "UP" that is about the equivalent of 700 fill down. Its more compressible than apex too. So basically the quilt will look like a down quilt with baffles but the insulation inside will be synthetic. After reading about UP insulation, I found the reason its called UP is because its the opposite of down.

Thank you for the post; I was just about to order a 30 degree down under quilt from Loco Libre and have the same concerns as you do. Did he say if the lead time would increase because of the UP insulation and what was the price deference vs. down?

There isn't a price increase. Choose "800 Down" and ask for "UP Insulation" in the order notes. The lead time remains the same.

That's really cool. I'm following along to see how it turns out once you receive it.
