Hi all,

First post in the new subdivided Canadian planning forum!

Just thought I'd post a tentative schedule for 2020. As always, there's an open invite to anyone wanting to attend.

Spring: Depending on ice out, first (new moon) or second weekend (waxing moon) of May. Ralph Bice, Little Trout, North Tea? Elsewhere?
Summer: Sometime - Nogonash Lake.
Summer: Sometime - Killarney. Paddle or hike.
Summer: Late July/early August - French River was fun last year.
Early Fall: Big trip! End of September - Temagami!! 2-9 day Voyageur/Marshmallow format!
Late Fall: Mid-October - Algonquin in time for the colours because, well, you know..... Easy paddle in.

I'll be posting a new thread for each outing.

See you out there!

Haven't been to North Tea for a few years, I like that area ... I would put in a vote for North Tea in the spring

Sounds good. I vote for Little Trout that way we get to do Ralph Bice as well.

Hmmm. tentatively Little trout sounds good, north tea has potential for wind and waves.
Nogonosh for the bass opener, maybe a little further down the lake than "campsite deluxe"
French,I would do that again in a second.
Temagami, 9 days. been on my bucket list for years.Ive done trips north of the area, east, south, not much around the chiniguchi area but im ready for some temagami proper.

One different spring suggestion is Rosebary. Padded through it and it looks like a nice lake. We could enter at Tim and go down the Tim river which had almost no portages. Estimated time one way is 3h and change.

And no, this isn't the nasty part of the Tim that people complain about.

But I'm good for anything - itching to get out.

Depending on water levels some of the liftovers might feel like portages on the Tim. Early spring will help for sure. We did Rosebary a few years back for trout open. Got windlocked to the site. Twas my first backcountry hammock hang.

Personally, I think eating one of your dutch oven pot roasts should be counted as an "essential" activity.

Niagara River covert pick-up? Not unless you're transporting a dozen cases of toilet paper and hand-sanitizer!

Hopefully by May things will be better.

Honestly, judging from everything we've been hearing, I think the Spring hang might have to be cancelled. We might just be "peaking out" on new infections in the next month and a half, just in time for ice-out. Nothing official yet, just a hunch. Fingers crossed.

Maybe this is a chance for everyone to practice their solo camping skills.

Stinkin Virus!!!:glare:

Wonder is the border will be open by then? Here's a post from Joe Tousignant in the BWCA Facebook forum:
"So I called the Canada Border Services Agency regarding a missing RABC needed for an upcoming Quetico trip. Quetico is closed until May 31. The border is currently closed until May 23. They told me IF the border closure is not extended, they will mail me the RABC. However, the nice gentleman I spoke with fully expects the border closure to extend into July or even August. The Canadians see the virus is still pretty bad in the US and it is not as bad in Canada, and they want to keep it that way. Looks like my BWCA plan B is going to happen! IF Minnesota opens up a bit--I'm told nonresidents cannot buy fishing licenses right now? Maybe on May 18 Minnesota will open up."

Welcome Droney. Keep your eye on the Central Canada trip planning forum and/or subscribe to the EGL Notification thread in my signature for alerts.

We're a little challenged in the days of Covid-19 to organize one of our traditional get-togethers, but necessity is the mother of inventions as they say.

Is Temagami still on the calendar for this year?

I can't join Lofty next weekend, but I'm putting a pin in the wife calendar for the Temagami or fall Algonquin trips options.

Also, I've want to squeeze a weekender in with my brother and niece in case she eventually goes back to school this year. PM me if you can recommend a marshmallow-y crown land spot suitable for a 10yo that's used to car camping. Trying to get her out on a few backcountry trips before she gets too self-conscious about "going in the woods."

KeeWayKeno

I'd rather save Temagami for when we can relax 'social distancing' & enjoy group meals, carpooling, etc. A nice Fall Algonquin (or similar) trip sounds just about right.

Here's a thought ... how about another two-parter around Opeongo? For the "Tough", up to the north end for a few nights exploring Red Rock, Happy Isle, Merchant or Proulx, then back to meet the 'Marshmallows' on Opeongo.

Water taxis up to the furthest reaches of Opeongo can make short work of an otherwise all-day paddle, and can be reasonable when shared with a group.

Last week of September / first week of October?

Like Keewaykeno, I`d rather save Temagami for when we can actually shake hands and sit around a big campfire!

As far as the fall trip goes, bear in mind that trout season ends September 30th. Opeongo`s nice. Bubba and I were talking about the beach site on Pen as well. Time`s flying by!

Beach site on Pen sounds goodI've never been there, so would love to see it. Sold my Prospector and ordered a Keewaydin, eta late Sept ... eager to put her to use.

If that's what we do, I propose a pre (or post) Marshmallow loop through Louisa if anybody else can spare the time.

Can we talk dates so folks can weigh in & put the time aside?

Just to kick it off, here's a suggestion hoping to catch some nice Fall foliage:

Sep. 29 or 30 to Oct. 1 - Louisa Loop

Oct. 2 - 4 - Marshmallow Meet on Pen

Oct. 4 - 6 - Alternate Louisa Loop

To help get you in the mood, here's a few images from this week's trip to Rain, Jubilee and Sawyer with Whet Newdell & son.

Cheers!

This whole Pandemic has been particularly difficult for my kids due to their special mental health needs. I’ve had to take time off work and had to miss out on two trips. I really hope the fall shapes up to be somewhat more stable for everyone. I really miss hanging with everybody. The beach site on Pen sounds perfect. The colours we saw when we were there last were incredible.

I will add 3 more to the mix, intend to be there Sept 29 through Oct 5 .... so we will see everyone there

I am not positive that the parking rules have changed, but I do know that if you reserve, they charge $11.50 a night parking for any vehicles past the first one on a permit. Not sure if it just me, but I have a problem paying more to park than I do to camp. So we just each book our own trip ... the parking is then included and it also has the desirable effect of limiting the lake population.

Hope to make it for the weekend. Unless schools have been shut down again by then, I'm a weekend marshmallow

Just got back from a week in the North end and bugs were pretty minimal, few deer/horse flies during the day, a few mosquitoes at night.

I've done the portages from Pen through Welcome, Harry, etc and the portages aren't too bad. Bit of a climb from Pen along the Galipo but after that the two longer portages are mostly downhill. Haven't done the one directly from Pen to Louisa.

Louisa as a nice lake with some great sites; worth a trip.

Great, count me in for the loop at least. Do I have to reserve some sites or are we sharing? We have five trippers for the "loop" now, so we're good to share a site, BUT unless you want to pay extra for parking, I'd suggest you make your own reservation as only one vehicle is included per permit. This effectively doubles the cost.

I'm definitely looking forward to another outing under the blaze of an Algonquin autumn. Let's hope for some crisp nights!

Are we considering a group stew? A rolling boil should(?) kill off any bugs and a well spaced soup line should(?) avoid crowding around the pot.

Just a note on this trip, Brantwing and I are going in to Penn Lake to day trip from there, for the week. The 3 kilometer slog just seemed about 10 m too far, if anyone else is in the same boat, there will be a few on Penn for the same period.

BrianAny thoughts on how best to locate you when we roll in on Friday?

I was going to ask for site recommendations, as of now, I was looking at the same site as we went to last time. I believe it was the first one after the only other portage on the lake (that is largely because that is the only site I have ever been to there.

So suggestions would be helpful, plus I am going to try and make up a HF logo style flag, but may not get that done.

We plan on having a orange / black bandana visible - but have never been to Pen so have no idea what sites are like. We will be tenting this one.

I've never been either, but vaguely recall previous EGL hangs on the east shore about halfway down. Perhaps around #6 or #7? Unfortunately not included on this inventory. Ideally with a nice western/southern exposure for afternoon sun and two sites reasonably close together to accommodate everybody.

Since we're coming in from the portage to Welcome, we'll probably just head over to the eastern shore and work our way up until we find you.

KWK

Using Quiets link, I believe we were at #6 .... I remember getting firewood on the portage trail and dragging it back to camp, so that is about the only place we could have been.

Regardless, we will check that one out and try to make our presence obvious.

was there any discussion / decision made on group meal or no?
we are ok either way - EGL generosity I've come to learn means there is always something to be shared regardless whether group effort or not.

Re. Group meal, I didn't see anybody but me & Jayson respond ... but I'm hoping Chard overlooks that & extrapolates from our replies!

There has been some contradictory info floating around about the need to check in at a permit office. I finally found this (below). Good news since the Rock Lake office doesn't open until 11 am! A printed, redacted copy on your dash is also a good idea.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200925/b127f01d5c5b50a7ca17b9bf99b3e671.jpg

I spoke with our Chowdah guy, aka Chard, and since interest seemed low, he hasn't done any shopping for it.

I however, in anticipation of turning the Clam Chowdah into a Seafood Chowder, have freeze dried 900g of minced clams, 600g of sous vide scallops, and over a 1.2kg of sous vide shrimp.

If there's interest in a Seafood Chowder, bring a potato or two (carrots and celery wouldn't hurt either) and speak up, otherwise Chard won't bring the soup pot, and my seafood might fall into my ramen before soup night. For anyone coming in for the weekend, some cream would be helpful.

Also, I'm going into the park this Monday so will be afk from Monday morning.

Count on one from the Niagara camp for that. She can carry her own vegetables though haha. Thanks!!

Is there a prepicked campsite on Louisa? I may take a daytrip that way and it's a big lake

Iguana

No campsite has be pre-picked thus far. It would be nice to get one along the north shore or possibly one of the Island Sites. I pretty sure us "Loopers" will be taking the 1725m portage into Florence, a campsite on the west end of the lake would be favourable.

I am in for the chowda as well, Potato and Carrot will be in my barrel, hanging in the trees with KWK barrel.

Also, I finally figured out the how to Geofence Jeff's- Maps , If anyone is interested in a georeferenced TIFF file of Algonquin to load onto their device shoot me a PM.

Planning on showing up on thursday on pen lake. Non looper. Anything heavy required for the chowda will be in KWK barrel. lol
No really, what could I bring in? Maybe catch a fresh lake trout ? Like that could happen on Pen lake.
Bread, butter and garlic perchance ?

Well there seems to be a healthy buzz developing. The recent pictures I've seen of Algonquin promise quite a beautiful fall.

I didn't see it mentioned before, but the beach campsite in question is the campsite directly south of the Night Lake portage halfway down the on the east side of Pen. Hopefully it'll be free.

Mr. Jiblets has very kindly taken on the role of poissonnier this time around. All I'd ask is that, as per normal, everyone carries in their own potatoes, as many as you'd eat (1 or 2) and for the love of God, please don't bring extras "just in case".

Mr. Highboy, I'm not sure, but I'd be willing to bet that fresh, hot garlic bread has never, ever been refused in the Algonquin backcountry. Yummers.

In keeping with EGL tradition I'm also pleased to announce that it appears that sunscreen and beach umbrellas will not be required for this trip. Given the forecast, extra tarps and ropes just might be the order of the day.

Has anyone thrown out a time that we'd like to assemble at the Rock Lake access point on Tuesday. 9 or 10 am (10) works for me.

I have to pick up my loaner canoe at Swift Oxtongue, but barring any surprises should be able to make the Access Point between 9 & 10. Once we all get there we can load the barrel & figure out the best location to cache it ... I'm thinking somewhere off the Rock / Pen portage (unless Cruiser51 or Niagara "volunteer" to take it down to Pen for us!)

I've sent 76Highboy, Bubba & Big Green Moose my permit info. So they can jump aboard. Anybody else still lurking in the weeds who might want to come needs to pipe up, the area is completely booked.

Soup Saturday or Friday on Pen ... ergo the cached heavy stuff & pot.

Be happy to - we are in Thursday aiming for mid-day put-in at Rock Lk.Oh sorry, thought you were going in Tuesday too. Afraid that won't work unless I can figure out a way to tell you exactly where the barrel is hidden.

No worries ... unless someone has a better idea, I'll just paddle up to the portage & retrieve it Friday when we get to Pen.

We are planning a 10:30 start from Rock, so there is a good chance we will meetup.

I will volunteer to get the barrel to the Penn Lake site .... my boat is just right for my gear, so I am pretty sure it will be an extra trip. Are you planning to cache it at the Louisa or Penn portage?

Also, I have never used a barrel .... do we just sit it out of the way or does it need to hung as well?

Huge thanks C51 ... but might turn out to be more trouble than it's worth. With Chard's huge cauldron and all the weekend viddles (& quite possibly scotch), its going to be heavy and must be strung up ... not an easy task, sometimes takes two.

Let's see if we turn up at Rock at the same time & take it from there, eh?

Mark the location with a hand held GPS and then share the exact location (coordinates) and a short description.

The group has been thinking about Temagami and it has been mentioned a few times ... I know we are holding a bit, to see what happens with the current pandemic situation, however there was a bit of info posted on another forum.

For those interested, here is a link to that conversation, there are a few links in the later posts on the history and some on the paths etc .... it's a start.
