EGL Winter 2023 Backcountry Camping

Don't know where, don't know when, but let the discussions begin!

Killarney? I don't have any intel on good spots and what the winter protocol would be, but it seems like a good place for a backcountry hang.

For my part, I'd love to get out at least once this season to do some good old-fashioned winter camping with the possiblity of some ice-fishing thrown in for good measure. We've been to quite a few cool spots over the years, Algonquin, Niger Lake, Kawartha Highlands PP and Killarney to name a few and all have been a good time. So where to go?

It's the old dilemma. Crown land camping is ideal but of course there's parking to contend with. One or two cars isn't too much of a problem but half a dozen or more is a different story. Parks have the access and the parking, but the fees are annoying. We haven't been back to Kawartha Highlands for a while. I'm open to suggestions.

As to when, maybe that's easier. I'd like to wait until we have dependable cold temperatures and some snow, say early to mid February (say the weekends or the 4th or 11th).

Killarney's a beautiful option. Lofty and Iguana are our resident winter Killarney experts, but if I recall, it's the basic "get a permit and don't camp on existing campsites" kind of thing.

I vote for the weekend of February 4-5 as the 5th is the full moon !

Killarney is get a permit don't camp on a site however the only real parking lot would be the base of the crack which really you're just in lowland with small swampy areas.

I like the idea of Kawartha highlands as we haven't been there in a long time

Have fun and take lots of pictures. I’ve never done winter camping and Killarney is too remote for a ‘test’ run. Hopefully we’ll gather at Valens sometime too. See y’al then.

We're meeting at Valens on January 7th and 8th for the "Gearing Up for Winter Hang", where hopefully the temperatures will be cool enough to put your winter setup through a trial run. That's the idea at least. Between expert guidance, heated bathrooms, room for extra gear in the car and the ability to leave if things get too difficult, Valens has always been a great place to get started in winter hammocking.

Grrr - I have big gig that booked in on Feb 4 :(

Just wondering if anyone is thinking they may stay till Monday?

Also What do you guys think about the following weekend? February 11-12?

Either weekend works for me but I wouldn't be staying on to Monday either way.

I'm in for the 11th-12th trip. I'm good with any of those destinations. Haven't been to any of them in winter.

I'm game if Winter isn't cancelled and we actually have snow. Maybe we need to drive down to Buffalo. :)

The snow will still be there in July so there's no hurry either

So are we settled on Kawartha Highlands? If so, does anyone have a spot in mind or are we researching parking etc?

Hey BGMoose!

The times we've trekked into the Kawartha Highlands P.P. we've parked at the trailhead here (https://goo.gl/maps/JsdQowa87K323m6Y6). From there we've taken the trail through rolling forest to Sucker Lake. A couple of us have camped along the north shore, but there's a good site along the southern shore at the end of an offshoot of the main trail.

@Chard

That sounds like a good plan. It's been 5 years since I've been to Kawartha.

Are some of you planning to go in Friday?

To make it worthwhile I would probably pack in Friday noon time and take off Monday.

Just a quick role-call to see who's interested in doing the Kawartha Highlands. Just drop a note with your expected date ranges.

For myself, I'm in for Friday to Sunday with the remote possiblity of stretching out to Monday.

FYI, I'll be bringing my ice-auger so hopefully we'll have easy access to lakewater and not have to melt snow.

Not going to be able to make this one.
I'll have to get my fix at Valens next weekend or after.
May you enjoy food and flames aplenty !
