I bought thee straps in a ratchet set. Cut off the hook. They say load limit of 500 break limit 1500. I am not using them b/c I was told 500 may not be enough. Yet I just looked at the slap straps and their carry limit is 400lbs. I would think if it's safe to use those its safe to use the new straps? Is it not?
rockstar, thats what i use. are they from harbor freight?

You need to look at the breaking strength of the webbing, not the load limit. The breaking strength tells you the strength of the webbing while the load limit it what the entire ratchet strap mechanism is rated for.

Let me start off by saying that I'm not trying to temp you into doing something that you feel is unsafe.:eek: That being said, when I test a new suspension system, I place a pad under me if the ground is hard. Secondly, I hang the hammock as low as I can and still keep it off the ground. I will spend several nights in it and eventually will get up the courage to "stress test" it by lightly bouncing in the hammock. I have a hard time believing that those straps won't hold you. I'm 6'4" and weigh 240#'s and for a long time I used the very cheapest braided poly rope that wallyworld sells. The only reason I switched to a webbing that was heavier is to 1) use the buckle system and 2) to be able to install a water diverter (the one I use only works on webbing) to ensure that I stay dry in the rain.
Give it a try before you give up on it

The Harbor Freight webbing that I am currently using has the same load rating/breaking strength as yours, RockStar. I have been using them for a while now and they are working great.

These were the nicest set from true Value. The salesman was in awe that I would want to "Ruin such a good set of straps". HA :D I hang relatively low anyhow due to my height not exceeding 5' 2"! :p I think I am going to try and use the straps and just leave the rope on the HH for now. I can always just tie back up with the rope. I weigh a little under 200lbs. Hopefully after the hike Ill weigh a lot under 200. :cool: YAY for the hike diet!
the straps will be fine!:) i am using straps w/the 1500#bs and am over 200!:eek: :eek:

I bought a set of straps from Harbor Freight today: 1"x12'. They were $3.99. I had hoped to get the ratchet ones (on sale for something like ten bucks for four of them) but they were sold out.
I've got them hooked up now, and they seem great, and 12' is sufficient for the trees on my lawn, at least. I love the cheap stuff, and these fit the bill nicely.

Mine are 12ft and I cut the hook off with my Dremel. That little thing is so handy! Plus my straps are camo, which I liked better for the stealthing I may have to do. My macCat is an olive/brown color and HH is a Kaki/brown. My ENO is a kaki/Tan with olive green. So either combo is good for optimal stealth!
hmmm...i was thinking...if i cut the hook part off the strap hook..but left the ring attached to the strap...i could then tie my hh rope to it and try the strap thing without having to mod my hammock... if i really liked it i could then do the rope removal thing.....just an idea

I just used the Bowline to attach the buckles and wrapped the rest of my cord from the HH above it to keep. I like having options. The buckles are easy sleazy!
