View Full Version : Interest check - Southern Ontario/Eastern Michigan
I would like to check interest on a group hang near my neck of the woods.
When: October (exact weekend TBD)
Location: Wheatley Provincal Park
It is approx. a 45 minute drive from Windsor/Detroit, located on the North shore of Lake Erie.
There are enough trees for lots of hangers, and spread out enough that you could still have privacy if you want.
The area could easily handle 50+ people, and good tenting spots are available too.
Map/Directions:
HERE (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=detroit,+mi&daddr=Unknown+road&hl=en&geocode=FSPthQIdhtIM-yl1HcsQAcokiDHSxLk1ToZ2Vw%3BFb4_ggIdsgUW-w&gl=ca&mra=ls&sll=42.094911,-82.440205&sspn=0.111966,0.264187&ie=UTF8&z=11)
Cost:
$47.25 for the site (I will pay for this but will accept donations if anybody wants to help)
$4.75/person
$1.25/person (youth & senior)
$3.75/car
Facilities:
Outhouse style privvy
Running water/plumbing/sink
Showers, flush toilets, are a medium hike/drive into the main campground.
There are trails that lead to the lake, but make no mistake this would be a car-camping location.
A campground map is available HERE (http://reservations.ontarioparks.com/en/map.cgi?p=123). The specific site is 'Group Camping #2' in the North-East corner of the map (a very secluded area).
Anybody interested?

Looks good Rug. I'm interested.
Whats the border crossing regulations (visa/passport)?
Location wise, Ohio folks can make that trek, maybe some other neighboring states.
Border crossing info for Americans:
To cross into Canada you need the following:
Birth Certificate and drivers license, or Passport.
To return to USA you need:
Passport, or Enhanced Drivers License
To cross at the Bridge or Tunnel costs $5.00.
Alalternative crossing location is the ferry at Sandusky Ohio.
I missed out on the Ontario hang at Bon Echo Provincial Park because of work. It was also quite a drive. I would love to go to Wheatley. My wife and I have car camped there a couple of times but I'd love to go back with my new rig. It would be great to meet some of our cross border hangers as well. I sometimes work weekends and we are short staffed at work so if it was on a weekend I am off I would be in. What dates were you thinking?
You should come. It will be nice.
I would certainly be interested, but my schedule is constantly in flux, so commitment is difficult.

I would love to but that weekend is already spoken for. Not sure how long it would take to get an enhanced drivers license either. Hoping that we can get something together for Oct. Sounds like a good place though.
Well, I am flexible and I have not booked the site yet.
What dates work best for the rest of you.
Looking at my schedule I am unfortunately tied up until October. A fall hang could be nice. No bugs, cooler sleeping and it would allow more time for people to plan. Just a thought.

October works better for me too. Would be nice to do a fall hang. It will also give me time to work on some gear upgrades that I need after the just completed August hang.
Cheers

Ok, so far October has the vote.
Now pick a weekend.
Looks like I am working on the 16th and 17th but the other weekends look open.
I have obligations earlier in the month so this is official:
October 30-31 Group Hang in Ontario @ Wheatley Provincal Park (Group Camping site #2).
I will book the site tomorrow, anybody who wants to show up is welcome to come. At the very least I will enjoy myself.
(Mods, can you please change the thread title.)

Hey Gargolye, bring some tarps and other goodies. You may sell a few. I know I am interested in an ogee and it gives me time to save up some cash.
Wish I could make it. Cooler fall weather... I will likely be camping that weekend but it will be with the wife and kids. Have fun.

Have fun guys. No way I can get away for Halloween, I have 10 yr old that would hold a grudge. Would have loved to go though. :(

+1 on that. The 31st is my Father's birthday and it will be my newphew's first real halloween (he just turned 1 in July). So as much as I would like to go, I will have to bow out at this time for that weekend.
Any other weekend in October would work better for me.
Cheers

+2 I guess
Dang, I would have loved to meet up and learn from the pros. Unfortunately I'm a major Halloweenie and do a large yard display so no dice for that weekend.
Sorry
I'd love a halloween hang.
Count me in!
Dewey
I'll be glad to have you.
Even though this is an All Hallows Eve hang, I was not planning on dressing up.
But be warned, my wife has informed me that I look rather monsterous in the mornings, and snore like a demon at night.

Just to be sure on this point, this is a single overnight hang. Ie the night of the 30th of October, right?
Cheers

Oh man I'd love to go! Ugh...5 hour drive :(
5 hours? You have taken the 401 before haven't you? =)
Seriously though, you can do it!
I drove 8+hrs to get to the Hoosier hang, you can do this.
Ha ha...thanks man. I will book the time off. :)

And it was great to get to see you there.
Wheatley has informed me that the group camping sites are off-limits to the general public, and will only allow registered non-profit groups to camp there.
A few bad apples have spoiled it for all of us.
The group-camping on the weekend of Oct.30-31 has been cancelled.
