View Full Version : Best generic place to get rope
In the future I'm probably gonna need some support rope for more hammock and/or gonna give advice to friends as to where to find good support rope for their hammock, so...
Know any places (other than obvious camping/sport stores or military surplus stores) that carry high strength rope. I have a friend who has a bunch of different kinds of rope from all over the place. Walmart, fred meyers, assorted department stores :D But, his are huge like rock climbing rope, not really made for hammock camping.

Look at marine suppliers too. Boat people love strong rope.
Boat/marine suppliers are the best places to get SMALL sized strong rope.

I have been getting mine from a marine shop and I think they use it for dingy control lines. (whatever that is )

I've been getting mine here (http://stores.ebay.com/Discount-Rope-and-Line). Good selection & prices.
Yacht chandler's: Spectra is used for racing control lines.
Climbing outfitters: Spectra in 8-11mm rope.
Hardware store: everything else.
what are folks using for tarp to tree?
tarp to ground?
I'd go with sub 3mm spectra or vectran...
Way overkill on strength, but light and no stretch or water absorbtion.

I got AmSteel 7/64 (http://www.samsonrope.com/index.cfm?rope=190) from him last year. Didn't see it on there now! I used it for the hammock main line. I think it weighs in at 1.3 grams a foot and a 1400# break strength.

tarps to ground? Triptease so I don't break my neck in the dark and I can find my hammock when I go out for a midnight ramble on dark and stormy nights...it's reflective and doesn't stretch...holds a tautline hitch really well...

#18 braided nylon construction line from home depot. about 1.5mm, and comes in neon yellow for visibility.(dark green too). it's incredibly cheap, light, and plenty strong.
it is a little stretchy, so tarp tensioners are not as necessary as with no stretch lines such as spectra.
