From the "feel" I thought I had nylon, or even a satiny polyester for $1/yd at the infamous Walmart...

But alas, no. I bought RAYON! (did the burn test- the stuff just burned away to nothing, smelled like burning paper...)

Is this ANY good for making a hammock?

What I can find about it says it is not suitable for heavy use and that article is talking about clothing! :scared:
I would guess the answer is "no". At least, not for a long term hammock.

Rayon is made from processed cellulose if I understand correctly. That gives it the worst of both worlds. It is a "synthetic" in that it is man made but it has the problems of a natural fiber when it comes to outdoor use. Will it hold you? Probably for a while. Would I trust it in the woods over some rocks? Nope.... Sounds like ditty bags and practice fabric. I'm sure you will find a use for it. At $1 or even $1.50 it's not a total lose.

I wouldn't trust it for a hammock. In the early days you couldn't even machine wash rayon because it was too delicate. The stronger, washable, version of rayon is often labeled as "modal" and it's a great material for techie shirts and such but still wouldn't use it for a hammock.

Stuff sacks?

That's the only thing I could think of it being good for.

That's what I thought...

Went to Joanne's and used my 40% off coupons to get some blue ripstop and mosquito netting...

The 9 year old boy needs a hammock with bugnet for a cub scout campout on Oct 2nd. The only question now is: how big to make it? he's 4'6", I'm thinking 9' raw material size gives him room to grow.
