I have three kids ready to get on their way hammocking (I've only just begun myself), ages 10, 7, and 7. I'm considering the Scout for them, as it seems the best bargain for a complete package.

Anyone have experience with this model? The site says it's the orginal design and not the asymm, so am I correct in assuming this is a lay straight design and not the diaganol of the other Hennessy models?

Other than the size, what about the Scout makes it cheaper? Are there any durability issues with it?

My wife is 5'3", about 120lbs or so. Could she be comfortable in the Scout?

Thanks a lot, folks!

I bought a scout for my son. He's six and about 4' tall. There is PLENTY or room in there for him. I believe it's more of a diamond shape more than asym. For my son it doesn't really matter.....
He sleeps just fine in it! Heck, he'd sleep fine anywhere :)
It's probably cheaper because of the materials. It's not pushing the envelope using extreme lightweight fabric and it's smaller so there is less of it.
I'm sure your wife would be plenty comfy in there.
That is if she likes hammocks and more specifically that style of hammock. Her size and weight won't be the factor there.

I have Hennessey's original model which basically is the Scout.
You can lay slightly diagonal which slightly decreases the arc.
I've had mine 5 years now with no problems.

I bought the scout for my daughter initially and she loved it. I upgraded to an ultralight backpacker, however, because I wanted to purchase a supershelter for colder weather hammocking and the supershelter is made for the asymmetrical design. I've since moved to underquilts, and in retrospect, the scout would have been just fine.

The Scout is more durable than the lightweight models - lighter fabrics cost more and are less durable. I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about the Scout model. Just gotta realize that it's an entry model and not something like the Hyperlight....which makes it perfect for kids.

My son, and number of his Scouting friends have the 'scout' model. Many of the older Scouts and Venturers would be about the same size as your wife.

Over the summer Hennessy was including the P/U hex tarp so it was a heck of a bargain. The stock tarp hasn't been any issue. I find that the younger kids are more comfortable hanging under a common tarp so they can sit up and see others nearby, especially when the woodland noises disturb them.

Thanks a lot, folks. I really like how the folks on these forums are so eager to share information, it's just great.

You all confirmed my assumptions about the Scout. These things can be difficult to guage with only limited hammocking experience. I've never even seen a Hennessy in person!

Most addicts like to have others around them who are just as hooked as they are so they have someone to point to and say "Hey, at least I'm not as bad as him.". Think of us the same way... I'm not as bad as (Insert forum name here) so I don't have a problem. :D

J/K, some of the best people I've met on the web are here. Unlike other sites that fight over different ways to do the same thing, we all get along here. :)

BTW, I think your kids should have a blast. I have my 2 boys hooked and they bug me each weekend to go. Too bad the weather has sucked the past couple weekends here.

Awesome, Neo, thanks for that link!

It all started for us when my wife got a $18 Byer hammock. The kids were all over it. I was skeptical until she took it on a camping trip and convinced me to give it a lie down. You know the next part... =o)

Since I got my Clark, the kids have begged me for time in it every time I set it up. I've no doubt they'll flip for their own hammocks.

By the way, Neo, your posts and those of the other folks in the Claytor group have me thinking about passing my Clark onto someone else in the family who likes it more and picking up the Claytor Jungle for myself.
