That's right everyone. I need some help from my Hammock Forums brothers and sisters.

During the latter part of last year I began designing and making quilts. I did not really have a name for anything I made because initially they were for me and frankly I did not think I would be in the place I am now. But here I am.

During a hike to the Linville Gorge a few of the Hammock Forums members were checking out my fractional underquilt and came up with the name of "Crowsnest". I mentioned that it might cause a little confusion with a product currently being offered by our own Jacks-R-Better. They said they really liked the name and that to them, it was different enough....so, I went with it. I kind of liked it as well.

Fast forward to now and we are running into a few issues with the name. Sometimes people drop the "Crow" part of the name and just throw up the "Nest" part. More product confusion.... and that just makes things harder. With all of the hammock related acronyms out there, it is all a person can do to keep up with new lingo. Add to that two different products fighting for the same name....well, you get the picture.

By now I suppose you can see where I am going with this. I need a new name for my line of fractional underquilts. We are going to keep the word "Nest" completely out of the new name.

I want to keep the rules as simple as possible. Throw out a name that you think fits the quilt. The winner gets the thrill of victory and a free summer version of the yet-to-be-named quilt. I will run the contest until midnight (EST) on Sunday December 5th. I may need a few days after the contest end to decide on the winner but it should not take long. If the right one is thrown out there.....I will just know it! :boggle:

That is pretty much it. I am sure I have left something out but you guys will let me know what that is.....:) I want to try to keep this contest as simple as possible.

Crow make me think of indians.
The Crow-people, also known as Absaroka or Apsaalooke.

The UQ could be called Absaroka

The Crow-religion has a lot of mythical names.

The shaman is called Akbaalia.
Baaxpee is a spiritual power that makes us adult.
Andiciopec is a warrior invincible to bullets.

Summer UQ = Absaroka Baaxpee
3-season = Absaroka Akbaalia
Winter UQ = Absaroka Andiciopec

A little difficult to pronounce though........

Stormcrow's Nevermore

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary
Of the many cold quaint nights that I've hung before
While I nodded, never napping, from the cold against my backing
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my hammocks door
T'was some cool breeze through my layers, rapping through my hammocks door
Only this, and nothing more

But the Stormcrow, perched snuggly on my under, spoke only
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing Further then he uttered - not a feather then he fluttered
Till I scarcely more than muttered `Other friends have flown before -
On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before.'
But the bird said, `Nevermore.'

Nevermore will you hang in the dreary, cold and quaint and needing more
Nevermore will you feel wanting, tossing, turning cold through the core
No, Not with Stormcrows Nevermore

Naming Convention for a line of Hammock Quilts consisting of a 3 x 3 Matrix

Rows - relates to the implied Temperature Rating

The three standard quilt lofts are designated by the following three prefixes:
Summer
3-Season
Winter

These prefixes serve to quickly identify the intended temperature range of the quilts and should be retained.

Therefore the new Quilt Name needs to work well with these three prefixes.

Columns - relates to the specific quilt construction

Top Quilt - presently Burrow
Fractional Under Quilt - presently CrowsNest
Under Quilt - presently Incubator

Ideally, these three suffixes would relate to each other AND identify the quilt construction type. However, the specific quilt construction type will become associated with its new name over time .

Nest is being discontinued to avoid confusion with another vendor's product .

Other existing names - Burrow for TQ and Incubator for UQ

Burrow is perfect as it relates to a structure found in nature that has a similar function as the quilt.

Incubator is pretty good as it relates to a structure that has a similar function as the quilt but has the disadvantage of being a man-made piece of equipment [artificial].

[I]Recommend that Incubator name be discontinued as well. Ideally some sort of design feature can be added to the new Under Quilts to further justify the name change.

Over time the brand recognition for the CrowsNest and the Incubator will be transferred to the new product names.

Therefore we need TWO new names that related to Burrow. So we need now to identify two structures found in nature and made by animals to keep them warm. Ideally one of the new names is a smaller version of the other name so that the they are both identified as the same basic piece of equipment, an UQ, with the only difference being the sizes [length].

Burrow [one down two to go]

Nest [oops  a shame though cause it fits really well with burrow, would the other guys part with it?]
Cave [too dark and scary]
Hive [no, implies multiple residents who are busy, not the backcountry experience I am looking for]
Lair [no, creepy, I am not going to want to check out anyone's lair, thanks though]
Cage [no, again, not going to come visit, especially if the hanger has one set-up next to his/her lair]
Coop [no, would kind of expect to find newspaper lining the inside of the hammock]
Kennel [nope, see Coop]
Pen [nope, see Coop]
Hollow [maybe, doesn't match burrow that well since it is used by animals but not really made by them]
Thicket [maybe, doesn't sound comfortable]
Mew [maybe, not well known]
Lodge [maybe, more recognized as a big log cabin than a beaver's home]

[B]Two Land-Based Names
Den [yes]
Warren [yes]
A Warren seems bigger than a Den

Two Tree Based- Names
Perch [yes]
Roost [yes]
A Roost seems bigger than a Perch

TQ................3/4 UQ.........Full UQ
Summer Burrow.....Summer Den.....Summer Warren
3-Season Burrow...3-Season Den...3-Season Warren
Winter Burrow.....Winter Den.....Winter Warren

TQ................3/4 UQ............Full UQ
Summer Burrow.....Summer Perch......Summer Roost
3-Season Burrow...3-Season Perch....3-Season Roost
Winter Burrow.....Winter Perch......Winter Roost

Post-Script

Darn, just found this in previous posts

Here are my stabs at it:

1. The Roost.
2. The Perch.
3. Nido (spanish for nest)
4. The wing

I still think dropping the incubator name as well is a good idea but I recognized that Buenos replied with the actual terms first

sigh.

Not to sound like a party-pooper, but from a brand recognition standpoint, it may make a lot of business sense to call all of your under quilts "Incubators" and just differentiate them as full-length or 3/4-length. (To take advantage of your already existing brand recognition).

But the contest is fun.

I don't know if your stormcrow name is a Lord of the Rings reference, but if it is you could go with "The Smial" which is the name for the hobbit dwellings.

3/4 length 20°F Incubator.

Simple, descriptive, and variables can be changed. For example:

Full length 5°F Incubator.

Now that I've read the entire thread, Dylan has said it first. I would suggest taking it a step further and drop the Summer/Winter/Three Season ratings and simply state the "lowest recommended temperature."

Not to sound like a party-pooper, but from a brand recognition standpoint, it may make a lot of business sense to call all of your under quilts "Incubators" and just differentiate them as full-length or 3/4-length. (To take advantage of your already existing brand recognition).

I like the incubator/burrow so it'd be nice to stick with that naming scheme of bird related items. Many good suggestions in the previous 11 (!) pages already, but I don't think anyone mentioned

Just call it the Storm.

How about three types of storms:

Summer: The summer Squall
3S: The seasonal Storm
Winter: The winter Blizzard

or: rename the quilts along the lines you have now, but make your winter quilt the Hibernator. By that logic, then your summer quilt would have to be the Estivator, which no one has heard of besides zoologists. Never mind...back to the drawing board.

I thought a bit more about post #127 (mine), and ideas from Shug and Bigred72...

I agree with RipWaverly who said (quoting Shug) that your full-length underquilts should just be called StormQuilts.

So then maybe the shorter 3/4 version would be the Squall (a short storm, a short word, a short quilt).

So then you could ask for a Winter Stormquilt (= today's Incubator) or for a Three-Season Squall (= today's 3-S CrowsNest), for example.

Wow. There are a lot of really great suggestions out there. Here is my suggestion:

The Flight by Stormcrow or Stormcrow's Flight.

Flight refers to the underquilt 'flying' under you (you already have the burrow that you climb into. A flight also can be associated with a collection of birds, which would be your 3/4 uq product line too. This name also gets away from any of the confusing nest or crow associations as well.

I knew I would get a few takers for this contest....but wow. Thorwren and I have been watching this thread all day and have laughed ourselves silly over some of the great names being put out there. You guys and gals have put so much effort into this it is just amazing. It is great to watch the different lines of thinking associated with the names you are all coming up with.

As I was trying to think of up a name on my own I knew I was forming a mental box that was getting hard for me to see past. I knew the solution was to bring it to the masses. Good call on that one! Plus, I am becoming quite knowledgeable about all kinds of bird related things.

We are still running the contest through Sunday...:scared: I will just say that I am glad i am not waiting until Sunday to START reading the thread or I would not get any orders out on Monday...LOL.

I would love to comment on some of the great posts in this thread but I do not want another "where is my quilt" thread popping up so I have to put my hands to other tasks. I will say that the post from Vii with the poem was great. (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showpost.php?p=362739&postcount=76) We will probably not use "Nevermore" for the name (mostly for marketing reasons) but that poem is going up on our wall...:) (We both love Poe)

I'm starting to think this may be harder for you now than it was before you asked for suggestions :)

I'd leave the Burrow line alone. Perfect for a top quilt and you've already got it established.

The Incubator is nice - if you like that I'd stay simple and build off of it. Not sure what the brand recognition is already, but if it's high it's worth keeping it. Dead simple would be the Summer Incubator 3/4, 3-Season Incubator 3/4, and Winter Incubator 3/4. It's simple, says what it is, and you build on something you've already established.

If you want to go completely new, something that is similar sounding, but less "intense cold" sounding. Again - simple rules the day. Summer Insulator, 3-Season Insulator, and Winter Insulator could work.

If you're going to the bird theme, I'd switch all the names to bird themes, but that's a whole other reply :)

Good luck!

I loved reading this entire thread....like Adam ant the Mrs. I got a lot of chuckles out of it.
So far I'm not in the fight--as in not being a Crowsnest owner-yet!
Personally I don't see the issue with CrowsNEST but that's just me.....
So much imagination I don't have but here is my best shot at glory:
Crow-Magnon Yep it'll be called Cro-Mag for short...for the winter model
Crow-Minimus I'd bet we'll call it Cro-Min for short...for the summer model
Crow-Medialis Wooho for Crow-Med (personal reasons HA!)....for the 3/4 s season model
Whatever the HammockGear folks choose, please stick with the Crow theme.
Such an incredible animal, so full of portent, omens, and prestidigitations!
I reflect on a story I read long ago, the principal character caught by her nemesis, affixed to a pole, her hands bound behind her and a Crow slowly pecking her eyes out-she had given her life for the remnant that survived the conflagration....her pain horrible but she knew she had given the gift.
And for you marketing guru's picture the label....the Crow-mag has 3 crows, the Cro-Med has 2 crows and the Crow-min only one....but they are all smiling.

No, Not with Stormcrows Nevermore

;)Adapted from Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven

Excellent! Just pure genius! Thanks!

The Rook
Definition - A gregarious Eurasian crow with black plumage, and a bare face, nesting in colonies in treetops.
Rookery - A collection of nests high in a clump of trees.
Sounds right to me.
Summer Rook, 3 Season Rook, Winter Rook

To expand on my earlier suggestion ....

Narrow it down to half dozen or so and put it up for a vote.

"The Wren" would be flattering! ...... But, I believe Feathered Friends would not be too happy with that, since they have already taken the name for a few of their products (Rock Wren, Winter Wren). Otherwise, I'd claim my name on it... It'd be fun!

well it does have a good ring to it- FF has proven that. whoopsie.

i still like incubator for the full lengths.

Well okay, here is my first go at it.

AdamsApple...you know like "Apple of one's eye" or Apple Pie order equals extreme neatness. And let's not forget that trees bear apples. And that an Adams Apple is underneath.

GreenApple= Summer
CookedApple= 3 Season
BakedApple= Winter

or maybe
RawApple= Summer
AppleSauce= 3 Season
BakedApple= Winter

or maybe
AppleBlossom= Summer
GreenApple= 3 Season
BakedApple= Winter

I have an apple orchard close to my house and the crows are always in the apple orchard cawing and the apples are just waiting to be baked.

That is all I got for right now...thanks! :D

LOL I love that! You know I think Shug really has something with that. You could call it the Crow Cozy to play it straight for marketing & in the field it would always be the often imitated, never equaled BUTT COZY!!

You already know this but I like the original name, "CrowsNest" and if you had a vote, I bet it would win... (It could still be a contest, just let your customers decide) If the original name wins, those who chose it, get a fabulous deal on 3 season CrowsNest (Oh I already got one) or an Incubator, (Dang got of those too) or a Burrow (Uh-huh that too). Well you'll just have to come up with something new because ALL of these products are Classic now whether you like it or not. :) :)
Love the story that your "Gorge Rats" gave it the name (Part of the mystique). That name (CrowsNest) was an integral part of your success-destiny momentum. Easy to say, Easy to remember... To change it would interfere a well-deserved perception of quality and product identification.
"Coke" is still "Coke" It just fits....

Wintercrow defcon 3

I just don't understand this name change requirement thingee "CrowsNest" is good...has been...and will remain so! People just need to identify it in it's entirety and not use "Nest". Besides "CrowsNest" just says it all.

Ok now I will get down from my soapbox and suggest as was earlier suggested (even though I was thinking the same thing, but wasn't first to say it outloud) "Bun Warmer" !!!!!
