How do you use a Sleeping Bag as TQ?

This is likely a noob question (though now that I have some amsteel and some whoopie slings and have ordered my 4th hammock and have actually logged 5 nights in the last two months I am beginning to think of myself as a veteran noob).

When using a sleeping bag as a TQ how is this best done?

Do you simply leave it zipped up and throw it on top? My first time I actually folded it inside out so I had the soft side against me, but as the bags aren't designed this way is this a mistake?

Or do you unzip it 3/4ths to look like those nice TQs and sleep on top of the zipper with it poking into your hammock fabric?:scared:

I just unzip it most of the way to make a footbox.

Noob here too. Unzip my mummy bag about 3/4. Put a safety pin so the zipper won't slide. I sit down in the hammock and put my feet into the foot box and then pull towards my head. Then I tuck the sides in under me a little bit. Then I wrap the hood around my shoulders and head and just make a snorkel hole to breath through. Works pretty well.

i unzip to about the knee, place in the hammock zipper down, place my feet in "the box" and tuck the top around my shoulders.

I think for now I'll take an old bag, remove the zipper and sew back up a 1/4th for the footbox.

I have a PrimaLoft bag with a 2/3 zipper. Zip it all the way down and toss it into the hammock. Get inside an do some light gymnastics to pull it over my legs for a TQ. I am considering trying to get into the bag and zip it up (except arms) then get in the hammock just to say I tried it with the zipper closed.

Well, if you do such things, just remember that the bottom is often not as insulated as the top. Using it purely as a quilt could result in one side being cold and the other warm.

I zip up my sleeping bag in my hammock. I find it using the draft collar the way it's designed helps increase warmth. As another poster stated many sleeping bags have less insulation on the bottom. My bag has continuous baffles so i can shift the down from the bottom to the top, or vice-verse depending on temp.

When its warm I sleep on top of the bag. When its cold I unzip it leaving enough for a footbox and use it as a TQ

I get inside the bag, zip it up and use it as designed. But I also use an exped inflatable mat in the hammock. I find it very comfortable.

I used a montbell 3 for about 2 years as a top quilt buy unzipping it all the way which leaves a foot box about up to my knees. Then I do the standard top q thing and pull the sides down around my shoulders. the thing is that the zipper pull wore in spots and putt holes in my hammock. so be ware and just sell your sleeping bag and get a true top quilt

I have a barrel bag, and I unzip it all the way, then just pull over top of me when I get in the hammock. I have a full length UQ so my legs and feet are always toasty.

+1 on this method. Also use small piece of shock cord tied from bag and to Mitten hook on ridgeline to help keep the bag in the hammock when topless.
