View Full Version : Hammocks against the rules?
Have any of you had any run-ins with the ole authority types for using a hammock? I know that many places have rules against tying objects to trees. I am really interested in getting hammock, but not if I am going to be harassed for using it.
How about the Wonderland trail, any of you used one on it? Did you have to go away from the campsites? I heard they are really strict about using the campsites.

I haven't found anyone yet that wanted to stop me from hanging. Although I have not been everywhere yet either.

Florida State Parks don't allow anything to be tied to a tree.

Once when I was car camping at a state campground in VT, the ranger told me that I couldn't hang my HH in the woods; it was just out side the designated area of the camp site.
He said that the rule was to prevent people from setting up tents out in the woods and I guess a hammock counted as a tent.
Made sense to me but unfortunately all of the sweet hammock spots were just outside of the designated campsite.

There are a few places that don't allow hammocks. Not that hammocks are specifically outlawed...they just don't allow anything to be tied to trees. Other places actually encourage hammocks. But for the most part, hammocks aren't very common so most land management agencies don't have a rule about it yet. If you're concerned, call the LMA where you normally hike and see if they have a policy. Or stealth camp.
Like Rock, I've never been told no, but I haven't been everywhere.

I saw a thread on WB that listed several state parks and camping areas around the US that were hammock friendly. I remember that one of my favorite places in the world, Edisto Beach, SC, was on that list:D . The pic in my avatar is from Edisto Beach.
There's nothing like swinging in your hammock and hearing the ocean crash just a few yards away. Heaven.:)

One of the benifits to Hammock Camping is that if all else fails, the tarp can be used on the ground........

I have to agree with Neo. I get away from the trail even where I wouldn't expect to see anyone else. I am usually out of sight, and often out of my mind.
