Ok... Here is how this works. I wanted to place the order tonight, but she never called me back. So tomorrow it is.
Once I place the order for the line, it will take anywhere from 3-4 weeks for Samson to produce the line and ship it. It will be shipped freight to me where I will pick it up from the local terminal. From there I will start divvying up the line into the individual orders, which may take anywhere from 3 days to a full week. 43,000 feet is alot of line. Then your line comes in the mail and youll be in Amsteel bliss... till you use it all up.
This is by no means going to be something that happens in 1 week. I hope I made that very clear leading up to this point. For anyone that missed that little aspect.. Youve been informed!!!!
SMSP... My response is meant to be general, not entirely directed at you. I make no profit on these group buys. My time is donated to the effort. All costs including shipping, paypal fees, the cost of the line etc were factored into the prices in the first post. So I may get cranky when only 1 week has gone by and someone starts asking "wheres my line?" I forget how long the last one took, I want to say it was 3 weeks from the time I ordered the line till I had it in my hands.

Opie, once again thank you for your efforts! If I were in the Lansing area, I would certainly volunteer to help with the shipping once the line arrives from the Sampson.
Anyone else in the Lansing area willing to volunteer some time to help out with the shipping?

Im in no big hurry. Shoot the way I figure it Ill forget all about my order and when my wife hands me that wonderful little box of rope it will be a surprise to me. Sort of a late surprise Christmas in March/April. :boggle::lol::lol:
In my case I didnt order out of need. I ordered out of desire.
I know from the last time you did this that it will take time...i didn't get in on the last one but i do remember it took a few weeks
this is alot of work and alot of Amsteel LOL ... ;)

What I meant to say...
Is how often does an Amsteel group buy take place on this forum?
On average. Just curious. I mentioned to a couple guys about the Amsteel I was hoping to get and it sparked interest to them.
I am in no rush to receive my portion. I'm just glad that I was able to get some. Thanks again to those heading this up!

I think this is the second group by for Amsteel. Group buys can take place whenever someone wants to organize one. This one garnered far more interest than I figured was out there. I didnt expect to get past 20,000 feet.
Announcement, the group buy payment portion has been completed. I havent checked to see if all the left over payments have come in, but there is no line left to claim. Now its time to wait. I will update status in this thread as any new information makes its way to me.

I still don't know how Opie manages to pull this off, but I am sure grateful. I recommend that folks, as they're paying, kick in a dollar or two. By the rules of the group-buy, the best opie can do is break even... I'm not even sure he'll get his fuel costs back on this one!

I ordered because it sounded like fun. Besides, how often do you get to say, "I chipped in and helped buy 43,000 feet of rope."
Can any of you engineering-types figure out how big the kite would have to be to get up off the ground if it were tied to 43k feet of rope?
OK, Line has been ordered.
I didnt know I had a daily limit on my PayPal debit card. So it will have to be made in 2 installments. When she told me it was declined, I said no way...

Opie, I've been thinking about the monumental task that lies ahead of you in measuring out everyone's line orders. I recently came across a cheap measuring wheel meant to measure distances. I got thinking that one could probably use it to measure out line...just wrap the line a couple times around the wheel, and then pulling the line and watching the counter until the correct line length. You might have to put some sides on the wheel to keep the line from slipping off, though.
Check it out: Harbor Freight Measuring Wheel (http://www.harborfreight.com/1000-ft-measuring-wheel-95701.html)
Don't know if it would work, but for less than 10 bucks, might be worth a try... :)

Note: as you put line on the wheel, it's diameter increases. This would not be favorable for you Opie :scared:
Our local outfitter has a very similar device - in concept. Dial in the cord diameter, then feed the line through the device (two opposing wheels). I believe it is entirely mechanical, no electronics. Probably cheap.
I've gotten accessory cord from them and it's always dead on. If you want, I'll look into it. Any excuse to visit the outfitter is a good one!

I'd only need 1 wrap around the wheel, so the actual diameter shouldn't change. If I was having enough wraps on it that there was cord on cord I could see the diameter change. We have measuring wheels at work, im gonna borrow one to see how accurate the measurement will be.

Opie, Here is exactly what you need. This unit new is $150 I believe. I buy shock cord from a Commercial Fisherman Supply here in town and they have one of these units. Works like a charm. They also have a coiling wheel that collapses to remove the rope, cord or heavy mono 200-600lb test.
This unit may be sold, since its from Dec 20th, But never know.

Maybe Lowe's would let you 'rent' theirs!
For me, I would settle for a scale. Weigh 100 ft of whichever diameter, and then start dropping amsteel into a box until it weighs what the desired length should weigh. Would take a nice scale, but my kitchen scale weighs to within 3 grams. I would certainly not complain if I knew this was the measuring method, and I came up a couple of feet short of the 350 I ordered.

Problem with that is twofold....
First... Imagine 350' of line unspooled into a box. Tangle nightmare and yes, Ive been there. When I first started whoopieslings.com, I was ordering 100-300 feet at a time. It came in a nice coil but even then, getting the line out of the coil would prove daunting at times.
Second.. To many variances in the coating, line diameter etc for me to rely on weight when I dont have any extra to fall back on.
OK, I will accede to your greater experience and knowledge.

Not sure if this might help, but Textile folk use something called a 'swift' to make coil/skeins- or to wind from a skein into a ball- but I was thinking that since it spins, and most of them adjust size to get the coils on/off, it might serve well for the processing.
Just trying to think out side the box, KM

Dont worry. As soon as he gets back from the Camen Islands Im sure he will recieve our rope.:lol::lol: Kidding im kidding.
Allright folks.. I KNOW everyone is getting antsy. Thats why early on in the commitment thread I tried to make it clear this process would not happen in a couple days or even a couple weeks. I tried to reconvey that point along the way, too.
Samson, like most other manufacturers that have several product lines, produce products in runs. One day they will make one size of Amsteel Blue, another day they will make something else, the next day something else. Since the vendor didnt have 40,000+ feet of line on hand, they have to wait for Samson to produce the line. And in order to get the line shipped to me for free, it all has to come in one order right from Samson.
Everyone will know when I have the line cause Ill post a picture of it in the back of my truck.

Now that will be a cool pic. Really how many people can say they have 40,000 feel of rope in their truck.

Allright... Im going to get on this ASAP.
I know there are some folks who have moved, or their address was incorrect with paypal. Please do not start sending PM's with your corrected address yet. Ive got stages of issues I need to get through prior to getting correct addresses. I will post a notice here in this thread when I need your correct address if you know the one I have is incorrect.
Also, I promised a couple donations to different members. Problem is Ive forgotten who. Please be paying attention as Ill also ask those folks to PM me when the time is right.
As of right now, my PM box is empty. If you have recently sent me your correct address, youll need to do so again when I make the announcement.

If you wanna come pick it up, Ill have it ready for you. Im home all day tomorrow.
However, My measuring system is a big fat failure. My wife just gave me a good idea that expands on how I did it last time. Should speed things up quite a bit. I need to head out tomorrow morning to pick up 8 more pulleys. Other than that Ill be home. Just drop me a note here when you think youll be around.
If you have a change of address request, now is the time to get it in. I am almost through the first page and anticipate dropping the first batch off tomorrow morning.

Are there any pictures of Mt. Amsteel? Or action shots of the measuring? Or pictures capturing Opie's despair at the mess he's gotten himself into?
No pictures of Mt. Amsteel. I didn't want to unbox everything and have it unprotected. My wife was cruel enough to get an action shot of the system, Ill post it when I get it off her camera.
The dispensing hasn't been as bad as I thought it was going to be. I'm able to do it here via a system of pulleys that allow me to pull out 100' at a time.
Couple notes....
I know some wanted the use of the flat rate envelopes to save money, 200' of 7/64 deforms the envelope more than I am comfortable using to ship long distances. I am able to get up to 250' in a small flat rate box and if I can, I will do that. Anything more is moving up to the next size box. Ive been on the receiving end of to many mangled flat rate envelopes that were over stuffed.
Also, no progress last nite. Son had soccer practice and I was whipped.
I am guessing it is too late to get in on this???
Probably. There is already a line-up of any leftovers.
Mule, I ordered a tad bit more than I think I will ever need in this life time (500'). Instead of holding on to all of it, when I receive it I will offer some to someone or a few people that missed out. If you're interested. Free to pm me and I will hold some for you.

I have roughly 3.5 pages left. It appears most of the more difficult orders.... The ones with multiple colors, lengths or sizes were on the first couple pages. I know page 3 is alot of single color, single size 100' or 200' lengths. So it should go pretty quick.
That being said... No progress this evening. I have orders I need to get out that I put off last nite. I should be able to get everything wrapped up and out by Saturday.

Im not so sure it would be extra... I think I grabbed it when I should have grabbed a 100' chunk of 7/64. So someone has a 100' hank of 1/8 when it should be 7/64. Thats my best guess.

Apparently some of the shipping notifications are either not going through, or are seriously delayed. I have 2 packages left to ship from the group buy and thats only because I hit my daily limit on the card thats tied to my paypal account.
Everything essentially is shipped. The 2 that I have here know who they are, and the UK order is going out tomorrow. Then thats it.

Yep. Its the only real quiet time in the house!!!
Boy, that sure resonates with me. After getting the kids in bed, and giving the wife the time she needs, it's pretty late when I get time to work on any projects of my own.
It can be frustrating trying to work on a hammock setup, crawl in to test the feel and accidentally fall asleep, even when you're not comfortable. :D
Then again, nothing gives you the conviction that you don't have the setup right than waking up at 3am with a foot and arm that fell asleep, and a crick in your neck that makes it difficult to get up with. I think my wife just chuckles at me when I limp into the bedroom anymore.

I just received 400' of gray amsteel goodness. Opie, thanks so much for your work on this group buy. No extra here either.
My shipment arrived today Thanks Kris
Just got my gray 7/64 today...noticed that there is a core to it???..looks to be a red a green core running through the entire section...anyone else notice this???...can i try to pull all of it out???...may this not be Amsteel Blue gray 7/64???...I just dont want to splice and hang from this if it doesn't have the same rating as regular 7/64 Amsteel Blue.

woooooooooooooooooot got mine this morning!!!!!!!!!
now 2 dog leashes.....4 whoopies..... continuous loop for whatsleft over......
thank you opie for your tireless effort!!!
Some of you will notice a tracer running on the inside if the braid. It's not in all the line, but it serves no purpose other than identification of genuine amsteel blue. It's not a core.

RESPONSE:
It's not a core, it's a tracer Samson adds to the line to distinguish it from imitation amsteel blue. You can pull it out if you like, leave it in, it makes no difference.
