View Full Version : Light Hiker Bedroll?
Anyone using the Light Hiker Bedroll as their TQ?
Pics?
Experience with it?
TIA!
+1 on this.... been trying to get a little more info too. I just may "pull the trigger" when I get paid next week and pick one up for some testing.
I'm curious as to how it packs, how it wraps around you (my IX UQ seems a tad stiff) and it's warmth.

Those just came out, so there won't be any review info yet. If you pick one up, do post about it...
I'll have a bit of $$ to blow next pay, so I guess I'll pick one up and post a report or something. I may even get the nerve to try a video. Don't hold me to that though!
Personally, I'm fairly confident this will be an excellent TQ for 30F and up. Always helps to be optimistic ya' know!
I'd buy one right now in anticipation for use during the Ozark hang if I knew how small it could pack down.

I have one... got after the cold set in last fall, so I have not used it by itself. It works extremely well as a supplement to another TQ. It also works well when you sleep fully clothed.
I would expect it to do well down to 50*F without anything else. When it gets warmer, I will try it.
Last night, I was reading "Dangerous River" by RM Patterson. He walked out from the South Nahani in winter with only his clothing, a tarp and a wool blanket for shelter. He said he was a warm sleeper, but, geez! He lay down next to a fire fully clothed, wrapped up in the blanket, with the tarp to windward, and slept in -45*F! :scared:

Well that sounds easy. I would think that it's the waking back up part that would be hard at -45F. (I'm assuming he did okay?)

Any chance you can take some pics of it in a stuff sack to show how well it packs? Very curious about this, I want one, but then I want everything

Here it is in it's stuff sack, next to a Dasani 1L bottle and a 16 oz can of coffee.

Thank you sir. That looks pretty small and I'm guessing it will compress a little more when you put it in a pack with other things. I'm also thinking it would be fine to shove it into a pack with no stuff sack and not have to worry much about getting wet because it's synthetic.

Nice!
You're about to make me $135 poorer!
Thanks for the pic!!! I'm sold. Just gotta wait to get paid next week.
Got off the phone with my wife... told her I was buying another TQ. She laughed and said it doesn't surprise her.

That's correct. It's not compressed in the stuff sack. I'd say it would be no sweat to make it 10% smaller.

True... when IX gets soaked, the nonwoven polypro scrim needs to be dried. It can take a wetting without problem, though.

Mac,
You said it's probably only good down to 50* by itself. Is that a conservative guess?

Your results may differ, but I find that IX on top does not perform as well as IX underneath. I am not certain why that it...
If I put a fleece sleeping bag liner inside the Bedroll, it will take me to freezing.

Are you saying you have a hot butt?

This is what I have been coming to understand too. Can't wait to test this out!
Mac have you ran into any problems with condensation in your footbox...
the one i made i found that the footbox does not breath well ...
i had condensation in it last night ... i made my footbox like GvilleDave did
i'm thinking of putting a airhole in mine that can be closed with omni tape to fix the problem

That's the way my design worked... I haven't made one in quite a while. I am about to reintroduce it with nylon covers. Personally, I have had no trouble with footbox condensation, but as I said, I have not used it in mild conditions.
The nylon cover is key; IX makes condensation when it's right against you. The ventilated footbox works, if you have hot feet.

yeah i don't have a cover over the IX on the inside
only on the outside .... i'm going to try the airhole once i get a chance
i was trying it out in the house so that may have had something to do with it
