View Full Version : Washing IX?

I know that there is a lot of IX expertise out there and have enjoyed reading all of the ideas. I'm planning to make a summer top quilt for myself using a single layer of IX with a layer of 1.1 breathable nylon on both sides.

My question is, can you wash IX? Is there anything special that I would have to do if I made a quilt like mentioned above?

Thanks for any help. I'll post some photos when I finally get it done (although, you'll have to ignore the lousy sewing jobs that I put together )

my theory is - if I'm not sure if the machine will chew it up/disform it - leave it out on the back deck when it rains & hope the sun comes out the next day to dry :D

I don't know about washing IX, but I know you don't want to try to iron it. It seems to have a really low melting point.... don't ask me how I know. So to that end, I would not recommend putting it in the dryer. In fact, I'd prolly recommend just hand washing in a tub with some Dr. Bronners or something, and line drying

According to i.d.i. (the leader in insultex clothing), using Nik-wax Tech wash is recommended.

Being that insultex floats, I'd suggest the hand wash also. Hand wash all your gear really.

so my theory wasn't far off to leave mother nature to do the washing

Sorry, I missed this earlier... but the correct information has been located!

Hand washing with mild soap is the way to go.

BTW, IX will take a dye... I've tried it half-heartedly. I have a kid's UQ that is an ugly light green.

That's how I washed my IX UQ. Bathtub with some soapy water, rinse a few times, and laid it out on a couple of deck chairs on a sunny day.;)

I'm thinking a cold, gentle cycle and line dry would be just fine, as Insultex IS rated for machine washing, and loft compaction/concentration is not an issue.
