What do you use to tie up the netting?

Do you leave it attached somehow? (Am scared of losing two pieces of string/cord/velcro).

I cut those ribbons from my Switchback and use something else.

I had some super thin shock cord and teeny tiny cord locks laying around. Tied the shock cord to the ends where the ribbon used to be, attached the cord lock to the other end, loop it around the netting, and thread the cord lock through the loop.

Pictures in a minute...

LOL!
The pictures make the shock cord and cord lock look huge, but they are tiny.

Here's the shock cord with the cord lock tied to the netting shock cord which is tied to the grosgrain tab. Tiny shock cord is maybe 3" long.

Cord lock tied to end of shock cord with knot tied to keep it from coming off. Looped underneath netting and up the other side

The cord lock goes into the tiny loop

That's an excellent idea Alan.
I found the attached ribbons were just too short to tie a slip knot for my fat fingers.
I picked up 4 REI velcro 12" straps. Your idea is much lighter with less chance of lose.

I had a hard time with the ribbon because it was just so darn slippery!
My quick-release knots kept coming undone.

Just did the "Alan Mod" to my Light Hiker tonight as well. Works pretty good. I left the D-rings on mine though but I replaced all of the shock cord with thinner diameter cord. What a neat hammock. I haven't laid in mine yet so the jury is still out on how I'll like it. Planning on getting out for an overnighter this weekend though.
