Video : The Making of a GrizzBridge (part 1)

I've been mutteringly darkly for a while about making a video on what I do when I make a GrizzBridge. The first installment is done. 12 minutes of video and I don't even have a completed hammock body by the end of it!

So likely to be of interest only to those who are (a) interested in bridge hammocks, (b) tired of looking at Dutch, (c) like seeing grown men cut out paper dolls, or (d) are really really bored.

The hammock under construction has a double body and will end up with a fully zipped in bugnet.

Well all that paper folding and such sure seems easier than trying to tape a 7' long piece of fabric to the wall with cord to get the curves....

Thanks everyone. The devil they say is in the details, so I wanted to go over the way I do details as an encouragement to those who may want to try their DIY hand at this.

But Moski, if you thought the body was complicated, wait until you see part 2 when I do the endcap....it's easier than it looks, but there's a fair bit of needing to pay attention to details.

Part 2 is formated and the multi part conversion process started
1) export from video editor to monster-sized .mov
2) transform monster sized .mov to uploadable sized .mp4
3) hand off .mp4 to youtube where they do what they do
4) post on HF.

Lot's going on today at home but all of this is mostly checking the computer to see when the latest conversion has finished.

One question about the bridge hammock:
What are the binifits of a bridge verses a gathered-end hammock?

It looks like that you will lay flat EVERY TIME, instead of finding that "sweet spot", but are there any other advantages to the bridge style hammock?

Hey tight-wad, I've been off adventuring and didn't see this question until now.

Two pros for a narrow foot end. First, it lessens the problem of spreader bars interfering with the tarp. In windy conditions I like to point the foot end of my hammock (any hammock) into the wind and put a beak on that end of the tarp. A narrower foot lets one close the sides in a little more at the foot, get a little more coverage lower. Second, a narrower foot seems to offer more resistance to the hammock rotating on the axis between apex of suspension triangle. I think it has to do with mis-matching the angular moments of enertia but I don't do enough statics to be sure of that prognosis.

One con is that the hammock becomes narrower and it is harder to bring your knees up.

In the various GBs I've made the foot end has ranged from 24" to 36". I now think a good compromise between the pros and cons is in the 26"-30" range.

If I heard correctly you were using "supplex nylon" for your fabric. Is that suggested as the type of fabric to use or can I use good old fashion ripstop?

ripstop is fine. I've made them from both 1.9 oz / yd^2 and 1.1 oz /yd^2 ripstop nylong. The latter (obviously) for someone who was lighter (160 lbs) and interested in a very lightweight hammock.

You could make one long enough for her to curl up at the foot.
My current (and as yet undocumented) design pulls the spreader bars closer in to have their spread be more effective where needed, which necessitates some hammock body beyond the bar, suspended on the suspension triangle. That area could be engineered to drop a little, creating a small dog sized pocket.

That is exactly what I was thinking with having her lay by my feet than basically on top of me. lol

The weight limit would have to be closer to the 200ib mark as she adds an additional 22 pounds.

Oh man I thought you wanted a dog hammock. I had already come up with a plan in my head. I think fast apparently. I had a kids hammock pictured but only 2 ft wide or so.

But this might help. I made a gear storage thing for a friend of mines hammock. I have since added cord along the bottom edge cause it would slide alone the suspension triangle. Making it a little deeper might be what your looking for maybe.
Oh and I am not even close to being good on camera so take that into consideration.

I think a bridge with it's flatter lay will help with having Kiba in there. She already does great in a gathered end, but I think she will be more comfy laying by my feet in warmer conditions.

Your gear addition is a cool idea. However, I want Kiba in the hammock with me instead of in a separate compartment.

For Kiba take out the end cap and sew the gear storage directly to the hammock. Better yet if you make the end long enough you wouldn't have to attach it to the hammock it would already be. I believe the Chrysalis storage is like what I am talking about. Do it at both ends and you have gear storage and doggy storage.

That's pretty much what I was thinking by making the hammock longer to have more room for Kiba to lay down. Granted, I would have to think about how big of a tarp I would have to use for cover as well.

I personally don't need a gear storage because I just lay it on the ground next to me for easy access. lol

I recommend watching all the videos in this set. I made 4 bridge hammocks as of now and all from just watching his videos. Grizz gives all the measurements you need just have a pen and paper ready to write. Good luck to you.
