Looks like some good deals. I keep thinking about getting a summer bag or quilt. But $110 is not in the budget right now. I would get the earier verson of the frog sacks, but at 1 lbs 10 oz they are only a few oz lighter than my normal bag.

Hey hammock engineer, what ARE you doing for a summer bag/quilt? I haven't figured that out and I'm tapped out financially right now. I was thinking about using my silk sleeping bag liner, sending my WM bag home, but keeping my Nest with me the whole time to use as UQ or TQ. Maybe keep my mid-weight thermals to sleep in? I don't know yet. Kind of thought I'd figure it out once I got there you know?

I have no idea. I am also getting tight on money as the start date approaches. I may push my start date back to April 1ish instead of mid March, but I don't think that will gain my that much.

There is a thread about this on WB. My sleeping bag weighs in at 34 oz. Most of the summer bags that I will find for cheap are in the high 20's. I really don't want to spend $100+ to save 4 or 5 oz right now.

I think I am going to take this one as it comes. If a killer deal comes along on a 1 lbs bag I will get it (I'll pass it along to you too). I am going to keep my regular bag until I don't even want to have any part on me and see what options I can find. If the night is over 70 I think I can sleep without any top quilt and just the under quilt.

In the end I really don't know.

You can pick up a fleece sleeping bag for about $10. They do fine for me in most summer conditions, probably down to 50 degrees, maybe lower if you are a warm sleeper. I bought my fleece bag at Big Lots and it has gotten plenty of use..

Those look like they might work. Based on the ones that you guys have, do you think I could trim down the rectangular bag? The rectangular bags, or even the mummy ones, are bigger than what I need in a hammock. I am thinking that I can trim it down to what I need and get it down closer to 16 oz.

Looking at the rect bag it is 58"x79" opened up. I should be able to trim it to 48"x79" and lose the zipper for velcro. That should buy me 5 or 6 oz.

I have no idea af the weight difference between velcro and a zipper, but I suspect it's not very much.

Looking at the construction, I guess you could remove the zipper, but I wouldn't. I have used it as a quilt in my home made zhammock. it works just fine with the zipper in place.

if your going to use it as a lightweight quilt, you don't need velcro. just sew a new hem as far inside the zipper as you want, cut away the zipper & excess edge, fold the newly cut edge & sew to finish the new cut.
then make the foot box by sewing across the bottom & up about 15" or so.
that`s how i made quilts out of a couple bags. works great.
and it will reduce weight & bulk.

Not much. If I had to guess I would say in between 14-18 oz. It's pretty light but doesn't compress much. It has built in compression straps. I just roll it up strap it closed, put it in a garbage bag, and strap it to the outside of my pack.

I have one of this type too. I picked it up a Walmart for $10, but have not used it on the trail or in my hammock at all yet. It weighs 37.8 oz on my cheesy digital scale. It is a nice summer bag for car camping, but is quite large to put in a pack.

Thanks. Now that I think about it sewing in the foot box would be the easiest way. I was thinking about removing the zipper mainly because I was cutting off one of the sides anyways.

I think I am finally going to listen to neo and order a SG product for my hammock setup.

Well I pulled the trigger on this bag. $33 shipped is a pretty good deal if it works out. It has a rating of 50 degrees. I am going to modify it a little and see what happens. I'll post pics when I am done. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I received the bag in the mail today. It weighs 28 oz without the sack for the rectanglar bag. I am going to trim 10 inches off the sides and taper the foot end into a foot box and see where I get. I can see myself trimming until I get to a weight that I like.

As a bench mark. it's been running 55 to 60 degrees at night here in central Florida.

I've been sleeping comfortably with just a poncho liner for a blanket. I sleep with a sweat suit and socks. No hat at these temps. The Guide Gear Ultralight is much warmer than the poncho liner

man! i don`t remember seeing all that last time i looked.
ed`s been talking about testing some new gear, but hasn`t said just what it is. i`ll bet he`s putting this stuff on sale just to move it along & make room for the new stuff.
i`m a little tight on cash now but i`m going to have to study these latest options. thanks
