This is a great site.

I can give you a few tips of my own. Something I found that really helps is ironing the seams. If I am going to put a 1" seam on something I will fold over an inch of material and iron it. That way when I start sewing I can roll the hem by hand without the need of pinning. The crease you ironed in helps keep the hem even. I just started doing this and it helps a lot.

Use good needles. I use the Singer brand.

It takes time to become good at sewing. I am just now reaching the point where my sewing skills are starting to look really good, IMHO. Get some test fabric at WalMart $1 bin and pratice.

I also iron the seams. I think it makes the final product look better. Next time I sew I am going to pin. With some materials, it is easier.

Other than that, go slow. Everytime I get in a hurry I mess something up. Everything I sew usually has 9' or 5' sides. It makes it easy to want to go faster.
