View Full Version : breath through-able, crinkly fabric - what is it?

Was at Wal-Mart the other day and stumbled across some new (to me) fabric. It was thin, so 1.1 or so, had the ripstop grid, one side was shiny (like my DWR finds) and was crinkly. I got excited and thought I had found some of that holy grail of $1 bin fabrics, silnylon. However, I was able to breathe through it with little trouble.

According to the little bit that I know, this means that it was uncoated. I'm curious as to what it might be.

Is it blue, by any chance?

No, I believe it was a greenish color. Almost want to say it had a grid of a tan color, as well. I don't think it was a solid color, at least.

I just picked up something that sounds very similar...does it have a wax-paper quality?

I am thinking what I have is sil-poly. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3774 I did a 4 hour test to see if it was waterproof, and it passsed without letting a drop through the glass, so I am happy with that!

Sounds like a DWR coated fabric. Does it have a shiny side and dull side?

Froldt,

I picked up some fabric that sounds similar to yours, but I couldn't breath through mine. Maybe you got the uncoated version of mine. I have been told that mine is a 1.1 ripstop nylon with a crinkly PU coating. Don't know if this helps, but good luck. I'm sure you'll find something to use it for.

It does has a dull and a shiny side, which made me assume it was DWR. Then I moved it around and it crinkled, which made me think it was sil-something.

I assume that it is not waterproof (didn't purchase it, since I wanted something waterproof) since I was so easily able to blow through it.
