has anyone tried just using a sleeping bag as a "pea pod"? Yeah, this sounds like a stupid question, and I'm sure many have tried it but, am I just not seeing why this would not work? I'll have to try this out later this afternoon using a big ol'huge walmart el'cheapo rectangle bag I got. If this works I can look for a better bag to go with my "frog sac".

here I used a wool blanket, and going to try a sleeping bag instead.
I can always throw my jacket over my head section on the low ridge line.
btw, the blanket folds up to be fairly small though it does weigh a bit.

I'm in the process of converting two army surplus bags to something resembling a Peapod/sock with a ridgeline. It's pretty heavy for most of the OZ weenies - not something you'd want to lug 20 miles. I will post pics when done. I have 5 different sewing projects going on, and always seem to find that I need something I don't have to complete any of them, so none of them are getting done. :o I'm also debating the best fastening method to join the two bags, now that I've stripped the zippers, cut the bags and sealed the cuts. Zipper, OmniTape, or ????. I might just sew it 3/4s, and hook loop or tie it temporarily so I can get it tested.

It has been done before. Check out Jeff's write-up on keeping warm in a hammock (http://tothewoods.net/HammockCampingWarm.html) to see some examples of people using bags like a peapod.

yup, that's just what I was looking for! and that slit in the end of the bag is already something I was thinking about thru my "trial runs" with the blanket. A bag like my "Frog Sac" with an open end would be kinda nice, and an extra long bag, maybe even sewing on an extra piece? ..... and this sure looks cheaper than using buying a peapod! ..... but there must still be some cons to it, otherwise everyone would be doing this. Right?

I would have attempted this a long time ago but my sleeping bags don't unzip all the way. With all my bags, and most of the other that I have seen, the zipper stops about 12" or so from the bottom of the bag.

looking at the link closer shows a link to that bag, and it's big, there's a 7' model and it zips here and there ....... and to another bag ....

I tried setting up my big ol' coleman on my hammock as an experiment and it worked out pretty good. It must be the type where you can zip two bags together, as it had a full wrap around zipper, and a second zipper at the end of the track. This make it easy to thread the hammock thru the bag. Then, like I saw on other underquilts, I put three clips on the underside of the bag and tied them off to the hammock clip at the head side, now it wouldn't droop. the ridge line between the head and foot hammock clips held the bag up enough to be able to slide into the hammock and frog sac.

Now that I know a bit more I'll know what to shop for and make a better system using a nicer bag and what mods to add to the bag for simpler deployment. I'll have to do a bit of hand sewing to add strengthening pads for grommet mounts etc ...... unless I can find someone with a machine .....

but it's looking like all this cold weather stuff is coming to an end as it's finally warming up around the country and will shop for a bag later in the year. For now I'll carry that wool blanket to get me by, if necessary.
