Have you checked your local Craigslist.com? I've attempted to buy 2 canoes locally, but they sell really quickly and I've not been very lucky.
This is probably the wrong time of year, but any local rental/guide shop usually gets rid of a bunch every year.

Good luck. I never see any "good" canoes for sale where I live. And, I'm close to a bunch of canoeable rivers. Now if I was looking for a john boat with any kind of motor imaginable, I would be in business. There is a guy that sells blemished Old Towns on eBay, but they're not cheap enough for me. I just keep paddling my old Royalex Mohawk.
I'd be interested in selling my Dagger 17' Halifax.
Don't know how fast you want one, but check out http://www.guillemot-kayaks.com/guillemot/WoodenKayakPlans they have plans you can build -- strip built or stitch and glue kayaks. Also there are canoe plans for strip built. I have ordered and am going to build a high capacity great auk.
