Hi All
I have been making a down top quilt built on mikeinfhaz 35 degree quilt directions. It is not finished yet and I sewed a few more baffles last night but I'd like to share these progress photos.
The down in the photos if from an old double bed quilt, I may not use it yet and order some new down from a place I have found on the other side of Australia.

Looks good so far. Keep us posted on the rest of your progress.

On another note, I wonder what the insulating properties are of cat fur. I could make a lot of quilts with all the fur I've got lying around, and it appears you have a fur donor as well.

Looks mighty fine. If that down doesn't work out, maybe your cat will donate some of his/her, uh, "down".

lookin good man. if you can get your paws on some of Speer's 900 down go for it!
in my quilt I used 6 oz. cost for that was $52. totally worth it IMO.
your baffles look nice and thick! its gonna be a puffy quilt, eh?
(btw guys, my quilt directions were posted at PBF. If anyone is wondering what Gunn is talking about)

Can you repost them over here? That would be great. Lots of interested folks here who might not get over there.

Hi
I created a pdf file of Mike's instructions to help with making my quilt. If allowed and if anyone wants a copy of Mike's plans I could set up a download for them.

Hi All
I have completed another stage of the quilt and decided to make a few videos while I was stuffing the quilt with feathers and down.
I am no movie producer or editor but if you would like to take a look then look here (http://www.youtube.com/user/GunnParker) for the quilt videos.
Cheers
Gunn

For summer nights, I figured my 30* bag too hot, bulky, so i bought from Campmor a mid-weight fleece blanket, ( 60x68) now on sale at $7.97 plus shipg. I had left over filling from the old bag I had taken apart, as I'd used some of it to sew directly onto my hammock bottom w/waterproof liner.(liner/then filling/then all stitched to bottom of hammock) With the zipper I had saved and batting from old bag, I sewed in the zipper into the blanket, leaving about 8+/- inches open on the bottom, which I then sewed closed with raw edge/seam to outside so my tootsies don't rub on seam. The zipper had to be cut to shorten, which I did AFTER sewing into blanket. Seeing as it is already blanket stitched on all edges, looks good and works great. I would use this as an extra liner for colder weather if need be, in my bag. cheaper than the fleece sleeping bags at $25 and up. Just an idea of what I did with recycled material.:)

Hi Everyone
I finally finished the quilt today, I am not totally happy with the feather/down mix from the reclaimed bed quilt and I think I will be placing an order at Speers (http://www.speerhammocks.com/Products/Supplies.htm)for some down for my next one.
I have nor weighed it yet but think it is good for handing outside my house or for car camping.
Although if it is warm I cam pack less clothing and still have my pack weight reasonable. The blue of the top looks a little washed out in the flash, sorry.

The front or top side.

I like the blue. I think my next quilt will have a sewn footbox like yours. I don't like the velcro under my calves. The link for mikes directions didn't work for some reason. You can't go wrong with Speer down.

Hi Dutch
The foot box is not sewn but has a draw cord like most, then because I did not want velcro either I used some of these doona snaps.

I bought them from my local shop but here they are online. They are just hand sewn along the edge in three places.
9mm doona snap.

Great job, Gunn! :) What don't you like about the down/feather mix? I was contemplating salvaging the same from an old comforter.

Hi
There is nothing really wrong with this type of fill I think, I have another two old doonas I will salvage more feather from.
It is easy to salvage, but don't do as I did and open up the whole doona and spill it into the bath and then pick it up again and put into plastic bags. Next time I will leave it in the doona until I need it :) The feather is heavier and does not compress as well as down.
So you your not worried about the extra weight and you have a larger pack or you are car camping then go for it.
