Sounds great, Neo. Post the dates, so we can plan accordingly. I'll planning a section hike from NOC to Davenport Gap probably in early May, but the dates are not yet determined based on reservations for GSMNP. Pretty much any other time works for me. As a new "hanger" I'd appreciate any tips from the old pros.:)

Do you need to RSVP in the Smokies? I think they consider you as a though hiker if you either start of finsih 50 miles past the park. It's either the Smokies of the Shanndoah (spelling) national park. Something you might want to look into.

talking about the Smokies here. If you stay at a shelter you have to have reservation. Thru-hikers are allowed 2 or 4 spots in a shelter. If the shelter is full thru-hikers are SOL.
If you camp you have to be close to the shelter not off in the woods tenting/hanging.

Even if you start 50 miles before the Smokies you still have to fill out a permit.

Hammock Engineer: I'll be starting less than 30 miles from the park so reservations will be necessary (unless I want to "fudge" my starting point:eek: ). No problem, though, I'm probably going to split up the hike to avoid Newfound Gap on the weekends.;)

HI folks, I'm green as a gourd at this hammocking thing. I've been reading and checking out information about it for about 9 months now. I decided I wanted to try it so my wife got me a HH for Christmas. I guess what I'm trying to say is if I come to this March campout will some of you folks have pity on this dumb tnhillbilly and teach me some things about hammock camping? You can even laugh at me a little as long as you help me learn about this stuff. I only live about 30-40 minutes from the camp ground and have camped there so I would like to come and join the fun. Thanks, tnhillbilly

I am going to try and make it down. I won't be able to leave until after work that Friday to it may be late by the time I get in.

I will bring a hammock and a tarp plus my tent.

I can at least learn how to set the hammock and tarp up correctly. I will not have an underquilt, weather shield, top quilt, etc, etc. I will have my insul mat max pad, a ccf pad and my 15° sleeping bag. If I try to sleep in the hammock and get cold I will move my stuff to my tent.

FD's come on down. You won't be the only one be laughed at.

Not at all...I laugh at everybody!! (Myself most of all, usually...)

Ewker, that setup will probably be just fine if you can manage the pads inside the hammock. The gearheads like to talk about all the fancy stuff, but pads are plenty for lots of folks. And like you said, if it's not warm enough then your tent will be there anyway.

Neo,

Greetings from Ft. Campbell/Clarksville. I'm interested in meeting up with other hikers/campers in the area since I'm new here (just arrived from Korea). I would like to know two things. 1) Are dogs allowed in the park? 2) If so, would they be welcomed by others attending. Either way I don't have a problem leaving him home. However, if he's allowed to come but most importantly welcomed, I would love to take the opportunity to spend time out with him as much as possible.
