Somewhere on this site I came across a thread titled Hammock Horror Stories. Anyway, I once nearly got run-under by a car. In case anyone needs a chuckle,

I was born and raised in Ft. Pierce, the next city south of Vero. My dad worked at Piper Aircraft in Vero.

Yeah, those were good times. Back then, I used a military issue Jungle Hammock given to me by a supply segeant in the Marines. I still have it but the fly is no good anymore. Also, it weighs as much as a two-man tent, so I never seem to want to carry it.

my idea of a hammock horror story is not getting to hammock and having to go to the ground:cool: neo

Well my horror story was just too plain funny. (Byer Hammock)
I flipped over and got caught inside the netting and could not rip my way out.
It was a sight for sore eyes I am sure. Not only was the hammock upside down so was I!!!
Finally with the help of a sharp tree root left from being cut down the previous week by a NPS employee, by the way I just missed by a few inches from being impaled on it...anyway I managed to get the netting on top of the root and kept sawing away till I got a big enough hole to crawl out of.
The ridge line held and I was shocked at that....nothing to scary.

The scary time was in the middle of a stormy night...thunder and lightening and around 2 am I feel something under my hammock. I have to say I never jump out of a hammock ever so fast before....usually I swing and rock and crawl out :S
turned out to be a wet stray dog! Who was now more scared than me!! :D

I have another good one: Once me and a pal went out for a night on the town. Got back to his house and after a few more I decided to sleep in my hammock. I don't actually remember setting the thing up or crawling into it, but somehow I had managed to set it up about 20 feet off the ground between branches of the one tree in the yard. There was absolutely nothing to step on to get out of it.

I bought a plain jane GI Issue jungle hammock awhile back and set it up with hooks into the 4x4 posts on our deck. I climbed into it and yelled to my wife to come and see how cool this thing was. As soon as she rounded the corner to look out of the sliding glass door, both cheap hooks broke at the same time and I landed flat on my back. That Quick! As I was trying to get my wind back, I glanced up at my wife to see that not only did she did not even crack a smile, she simply had the classic "What in the heck did I marry?" look. I laughed uncontrollably (after I could breath again)!
